The sound of something large and fast circling you snaps your out of your daydream. When did it get so dark? You reach towards your pocket, but there is no phone. You remember now, its at home charging by the couch.
You feel your pulse quicken as the sound of heavy footsteps keep circling you. The shadows of the trees make it hard to see anything clearly, but you still strain your eyes trying to catch a glimpse of whatever has found you out here.
Thr footsteps stop, but that only makes you more anxious. Is it a deer just as terrified as you? No, deer dont walk that heavily. You try to steady your breath as the shadow in front of you takes on the shape of a muscled man. But his head isnt right, its too long, his ears too pointy, too tall.
As the creature steps towards the center of the clearing, moonlight illuminates its hulking form. You think of running but are too slow. Already the creature has lifted its hands above its head, lifting one leg as if to pounce.
Before you can scream, the beast begins twirling. Its massive form moving with a grace you can only describe later as dainty. The creature does a pirouette, leaning its head back. The moon gives you a good view of its face, a grusome smile streached across its glistening fangs.
After a few more impressive moves, the beast bows towards you holding one claw out. It takes you a moment to understand before you lift your own hands up and attempt your own unskilled rendition of a ballerina.
When you finish the beast looks unpleased. Its mouth all the more terrifying now that it is pulled back into a snarl.
You turn to run but the creature grabs you, holding one hand while the other sits softly at your waist. You let out a suprised gasp, but the wolf wastes no time. The two of you begin to waltz around the small forest clearing. The creature makes a good dance partner, and soon you move together in time with eachother, your faces turned towards eachother in the moonlight.
You loose yourself in this moment. Before you cant think of how long it has been, the sun begins coloring the sky above you. You know your time is comming to an end but you dont want it to. As the moon dissappears over the horizon, your dance partner spins you one last time, letting go of your hand and disappearing before you can say goodbye. The night is over and while you lasted through it, you worry there will never be another like it.
I love that youre creating a story based around spreading fediverse principles.
I do think the lore works really well in your story. Fungus as an alternative mode of functioning works well in the setting you created for the story & parallels alternative communities like lemmy or irl collectives.
Maybe expanding some of the sections could help with grounding some of more abstract areas and would give more space for exposition to make the work more approachable for mainstream readers.
More specifically, fungus as a metaphor for how a decentralized network functions is great. All nodes are connected through clusters/communities, allowing information to be passed, but also allowing groups to remain somewhat separate. You can even have kicking out certain people from the hive mind as a parallel to blocking certain malicious users.
Or it could be a purposful cutting of the mycelial connection that binds them to the group? Same with cutting connections to a specific cluster that us deemed toxic or unsafe. Like maybe one town starts having literally everyone join the fungiverse, and other clusters have to come together to dissolve the connection to keep their own minds from being overrun?
Maybe you could have the druid character get kind of a introduction the the fungiverse after they eat the mushroom? Maybe their panicking, and a wise character sees it and brings them into the fold. It could even be the fungus chick who becomes the druids companion. Then it doesnt feel so exposition heavy, but still clues the reader into whats going on.
Also: if you want specific feedback, id be happy to annotate a copy of the story or something for you.
Edited to add: i would leave the metaphore to the fediverse as unspoken-- i think the allegory works well and directly stating that it is like this real world thing would break some of the magic & lessen the potential for the allegory to work on multiple levels.
I was thinking the wise person wasnt necessary to join the fungiverse, more so that they explained some things. Like they arent necessary, just helpful. Just like how often people new to the fediverse need some help from existing members to get tips and information about it that they might not quite grasp at first.

I really enjoyed that! I think the first section was the strongest to me personally – it was more grounded in real events, while some of the other sections lost some of their power by becomming too abstract. I did enjoy the aspect of different interconnected characters setting up eachothers stories.
I went ahead and shared it in my solarpunk bookclub, hopefully some more people will give it a read through!

I think what people want is very specific, well curated, and active communities about uncommon interests. Things like a whole community that is just 30-35year old redheads wearing cat ears and cleaning their shower in yellow striped thigh highs or something equally as weird and specific.
Like i remember stumbling across a community on reddit that was all about sewing felt vaginas/butts into stuffed animals so people could take their relationship with their favorite plushie to the next level. The community was shockingly active and full of discussion.
Things like that take time and lots of active users to become a thing. Lemmy isnt quite there yet. Same with other kinds of niche interests that havent quite set up shop here yet (for example there are cannabis communities, but nothing specifically for bonsai cannabis)
I think what communities and instances youre on really affect that.
Like ive noticed posts within my instance (solar punk) tend to be very kind and helpful. Likely because it is a small instance full of eco friendly sci fi optimists. I even joined a discord based book club that has weekly voice chats through the instance.
Ive noticed the big conversations that end up in all (often from lemmy.ml) tend to have more bickering and general nastiness. The same was true of reddit, niche things tend to collect fewer trolls because there arent as many people there for them to mess with.
Both would make sense. Lemmy has definetly had some growing pains and lemmy.ml has been targeted quite a bit recently by bad actors. Plus since its the biggest instance, it is going to be more influenced by the energy of the new sign ups.
I hope as things continue to grow you find friendlier spaces and good discussions :)

And cannabonsai is super fun! You prune the cannabis kind of like a traditional bonsai tree. Its fun because you can get a complete look in a few months compaired to the years that traditional bonsai takes. It also works really well as a way to keep a graphed mother plant with multiple strains.

I think the issue was more about forcing intense discourse on people who aren’t interested in having that conversation at that moment.
You werent banned for calling out transphobia, you were banned because you were being pedantic and argumentative. Plus you were on a new account so everything all together made it look like you were trolling.
I think if you had stopped after one or two comments it would be fine. My rule is generally to point out something if I feel it needs to be said, then maybe give one more clarifying response, then let it go.
Another choice would be to make a separate post somewhere discussing the neuances of ‘disliking politics’ – then people who comment on it clearly want to have that discussion and are opting in.
It seems like the situation triggered you, and sometimes the most productive choice is to step back from the conversation and move on.

Oooo that sounds goooood. I had some stawberry cough live resin & it was a nice light berry flavor. I enjoyed it, but im guessing the freshly cured homegrown was even better.
I havent tried the bud in the photo, it just started drying yesterday & itsnt smokable yet. It smells gassy/skunky with a slight floral overtone. Im hoping it will get fruitier as it cures.
I think my favorite strain ive grown this year was tropacana cookies. It had this amazing fruity floral smell, like a box of fruit loops with more citrus. The high was nice and heady too. Im still sad i didnt get some seeds or clones from that grow.
Yeah, cloning takes alot of dedicated space. I also cant justify turning every closet in my house into a grow space lol. I have been tempted tho.
