Can I use Linux from a portable Hard Drive to use whenever/wherever I need it? (kbin.social)

So if I have my Desktop at home, my personal laptop, and my laptop I use for work/business trips, can I have my own personal Linux setup on a portable drive that I can plug into and boot into from any of my devices? Like a cloud Linux setup, but I'm the cloud. Fear my cumulonimbus rumbles!

It is doable to install an OS onto a flash drive or external drive, but from my experience it was really slow. Just need to make sure to then boot the machine to the USB device. Some machines you might find it difficult to change that in the BIOS.

They all do interact and “work” together. I know Dansup is working on a single sign in with mastodon to Pixelfed. That’ll be a nice integration too. I think what kind of integration will be nice to have one account across multiple platforms.

@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

You are viewing a post that is originating on kbin social. It is then federating to your instance in kbin.cafe. So your instance is receiving a copy in a way to view and interact with the post. Your instance then can send a copy of the replies and comments to the originating instance so they can all work together.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

You and others on kbin.cafe will have to subscribe to the same magazine on other instances. You would interact with it just like you are now with this post on kbin.social. There is a possibility the same post could appear in the general / all feed of federated posts too.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

You can try the “more > copy link to fediverse”

But you shouldnt have to browse kbin.social then copy that link to a url formatted for you instance.

On your kbin.cafe you could try /d/kbin.social to try and do a link too. Might just need to follow the /m/ on other instances to see the posts from other kbin and lemmy instances.

@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

This is looking great! Going to be a nice addition to the kbin experience. Can’t wait!

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

The settings and federation panel are on the right sidebar by default. On mobile they are set to float and follow the main content then hide the panel so you see the federation icon and settings panel. After the settings is the magazine info and the user who posted the thread info.

I agree these should be a tad easier to find or added to the user profile as well.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

This is the way

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

I’ve used some of them and the web and mobile interface of kbin is still easier to use than the beta apps of lemmy and web interface. Not sure why so many went the lemmy route other than the rexxit and lemmy was slightly easier at the time to spin up new instances.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

For that price point and management, I sure hope that helps kbin easier for others to get more instances going. Even if folks have a 1-5 user instance $10/mo is great!

Artemis private beta rollouts have begun! (kbin.social)

Hi there, the Artemis private beta rollout has just started! @hariette will be emailing 50 signup sheet users, while @lilkev will be adding 50 users from Artemis Discord. The order will be based on the submissions to the private beta signup form, as well as general activity within the Artemis community....

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

This is going to be a game changer for kbin! Can't wait!

I haven't seen anyone mention the kbin native(?) app!? I tried it and it seems perfect and amazing? (kbin.social)

I tried Jerboa briefly and couldn't get it to work well for me. Then I visited kbin on my phone's browser and was prompted to install the kbin app!? I haven't seen any references to it, but it's exactly what I wanted...? Has anybody else tried it?

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

@hariette is working on ArtemisApp and there is a private beta first as it's all from the ground up. There's a lot of work Kbin needs itself to have 3rd party integrations as it is a little newer and younger than some of the alternatives.

@dansup is also working on another alternative too, kbam

Both of them are working hard on getting something to community is wanting. All in due time! You can join the /m/ArtemisApp magazine or dansup for following along with their progress. Getting involved with them seems to be the best way to help.

@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

I never got any help asking questions there anyways. Answers I got back we’re trollish. When I provide and answer it can’t be the answer as it’s based on your own reputation score which you can’t get but answering questions. It seems like a flawed system. Didn’t know they had mods either. Never really got any solutions either from stack overflow, unless you read every comment for the right answer.

@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

Changing ports isn’t a terrible thing, also not the perfect “fix” either, as you can still recognize open ports and scan the service on them.

Some ports are reserved in networking, so should stay away from those.

Some ISPs don’t allow you open ports on 80/443 as those are web hosting ports and they provide a service to consumers to download content from the internet, not for their consumer to be a web hosting provider as well. That’s at the residential level, if you have a business plan that might change, but it might be hard to convince and ISP otherwise.

@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

Also seems like Dansup is finding a lot of spam accounts on lemmy instances too. He manages the fedidb of all the fediverse software and platforms with various metrics

Lemmy.ml is blocking all requests from /kbin Instances (kbin.social)

I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message...

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

Could you see anything…? All kbin.social items being blocked, not just the content?

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

I use these settings, but the bottom two will show you the new posts/treads in the subscribed magazine. I too, was getting a lot of notifications for every new item in kbin I subscribed to. I changed it to just what I posts and comments. I don't mind setting my "home" screen to my subscribed content and then going back to all the federated content as well. I do want to know when someone replies to my content so I can continue the conversation better.

Markdown not displaying correctly in comments

I viewed my own comment on both my profile and in the original context of the post I commented on. The text enclosed by two tildes previously appeared as striked through, as you would usually get in Markdown when enclosing text with two tildes. But now it doesn’t appear to be striked through, it just shows two tildes enclosing...

I’ve seen some strange things too with mark down especially in the title of posts if there are links. I also think the markdown processor for kbin could use an update.

I did create this this issue so hopefully there’s some better markdown support in the future.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

you could for sure. If you're not using a git service for other projects I can see the hesitation of creating an account just for a single issue. But then again, Codeberg is a great alternative to GitHub. Either way I do think some minor improvements could be made.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

The irony of the magazine name and bricking the magazine. Glad you got it fixed!

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

I don’t think it’s a matter of “the fediverse isn’t built for that kind of privacy”. The fediverse does have privacy post options all built into the platform you’re using. Mastodon allows private posts, only those who follow you. Kbin is a mashup of Reddit style threads and microblog timeline posts.

Kbin was developed to show upvotes and boosts as those are synonymous to other platforms like mastodon as favorites and boosts.

The lemmy platform is more “private” that on lemmy posts you don’t see this as much. With federation and interacting similarly between ecosystems you start seeing the minor differences.

I do think that changes as possible and that is what makes the open source of the platforms we’re using to be important and requires community input for improvements and suggestions as a whole.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

I recently switched to Fedora to help get into the Arch based Linux realm. Historically been on Debian based distros. You can’t go wrong with many of the “mainstream” distributions as your first intro to Linux. If you come across any issues ask away and that it a how you’ll learn more about how Linux works, Arch, etc with your hardware too.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

I run a PiHole and have Quad9 as the upstream resolver instead of the ISP. That was pretty simple to setup as well. You can also do DNS-over-HTTPs and other options as well for content filtering to block malware and items of DNS upstream.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

I also think some of the growth of Lemmy is the ability to get the project to a functioning stance. The start of Kbin still seems a little rocky, but getting better.

ernest, to kbinMeta
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Hey, I'll try to handle the abandoned magazines / transfers as quickly as possible. However, I need to automate this process because there are too many requests.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

@ernest I guess the other question, what determines an abandoned magazine? Will there be contact to the current owner to make a final decision?

A quick guide to creating and moderating magazines (kbin.social)

Hello kbin! Since there’s a lot of new users migrating to this platform, I decided to make a short guide to creating and moderating a magazine. This will be a quick and short guide since there will be a lot of new features coming soon. I might make a new guide when a few major tools come, but in the meantime, I will...

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

How do we add the "related magazines" as well on the sidebar panel? How does that portion work?

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

I know some folks have used RSS for many things on user accounts as well. Sometimes there could be a reason you cant subscribe to a user or magazine and RSS is a way around that. I subscribe to my mastodon rss feed just for fun too.

using the RSS feed you could link it to a blog or personal website as well and share your posts in a way to others who may not be on the same site as you. Like sharing your posts on your websites so others can see on your site what it is you post so they dont have to have an account as well on kbin for example.

Or you can get a RSS firehose of accounts together to keep up on things outside of the community to ensure you dont miss something in your /m/sub feed.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

What is hard too, is if all the posts to get things started are the mods or creator, the same ghost town might occur. It’s hard to tell or know what will be interesting to get people talking so to speak. Some should also be put on the subscribers as well who also have an interest. It’s a double edge sword sometimes.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

How many are you looking at using for the private beta? Might want to adjust the google form to only allow one signup per account, so users dont reregister.

cjerrington,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

Thanks @lilkev !

I'm working through the selfhost install now! we'll see how it goes and works. I asked them yesterday about their app support for mobile and custom domains. iOS is supported and they are working on adding that support for Android.
