billwashere,

Maybe it might because Israel is in the wrong? Maybe overreacting a bit and committing something awfully close to genocide? Just a thought.

billwashere,

I know plenty of Jewish folks who aren’t happy with the Israeli government and how this is being handled.

billwashere,

I have looked it up and to include it in that list is just downright ludicrous. Let me give you some quotes from the wiki

“The system was characterized as a modern x86-64 Commodore 64, using an interface similar to a mixture of DOS and Turbo C.”

“TempleOS (formerly J Operating System, LoseThos, and SparrowOS) is a biblical-themed lightweight operating system (OS) designed to be the Third Temple prophesied in the Bible. It was created by American programmer Terry A. Davis, who developed it alone over the course of a decade after a series of manic episodes that he later described as a revelation from God.”

“The system was characterized as a modern x86-64 Commodore 64, using an interface similar to a mixture of DOS and Turbo C. Davis proclaimed that the system’s features, such as its 640x480 resolution, 16-color display, and single-voice audio, were designed according to explicit instructions from God.”

What the actual fuck?!?

billwashere,

In my freshman year of computer science our main computer lab was filled with Sage IV machines. Basically a Motorola 68k series with 4 or 5 serial terminals. Most people were writing Pascal code or using a simple word processor. But god forbid you were on there with someone taking assembly language. Because they could write really stupid code with super tight loops that never allowed any other code to run, and the only thing you could do was reboot. So if you hadn’t saved your code you were fucked.

So I never purposely wrote really bad code that would overwrite unprotected shared memory with random quotes from Marvin from HHGTG to mess with other people. I would never do that. That would have been unethical and shit… 🤔

I did learn a lot of basic hardware and operating systems though so there’s that.

billwashere,

I’m a doctor not an escalator…

Wait wrong Star show.

billwashere,

Well having personally dealt with the Redhat and Ubuntu fiascos there are some that are clearly better than others 🤣

I would say that some are better dealing with certain hardware better than others. But you are right, it’s all Linux so any distro could be made to work.

billwashere,

Personally if it were me and gaming was my primary focus, I’d go to the place that’s doing the most with gaming and Linux, SteamOS.

There are lots of sites that go through the process of building a Linux gaming machine using SteamOS.

Here’s just one random video I found (not affiliated with this at all) about using an old optiplex from eBay, some ram upgrades, and a RX580 GPU. Apparently they did this for $150 but take that with a grain of salt. Hope this helps.

billwashere,

Ok this is sexy. I wasn’t even looking for something like this but now I want one.

billwashere,

What does this have to do with Hamas?

This just sounds like Israel being a dick.

billwashere,

I’m neurodivergent too and whenever I read statements like this I just assume they are being sarcastic since it makes me feel better about humanity in general.

billwashere,

Yeah couldn’t agree more.

On a completely different tangent: Is it just me or are the discussion here (on Lemmy that is) just more sane and civilized than Reddit? Being a Reddit refugee I’m just not used to the rationality and civility here. I find it quite refreshing. It’s like there are adults here or something. 🤣

billwashere,

For a DB, iscsi all day long. At work we have some of the fastest storage available on the market today (SCM drives in front of E1.L super fast SSD all connected with 100gbe mellanox switches and NICs) and it barely can keep up with the MySQL DB. NFS would absolutely work for the other use cases. But these are enterprise class systems for an entire university so yeah lots of load.

For a home system, I’m not sure it matters if the load isn’t much. I prefer iscsi because I know how it works. I use it for VMware datastores even at home. Anything that is shared storage between webservers or the like, NFS is almost required since shared iscsi storage is going to be very difficult to set up outside of something like VMware datastores since the file system is setup for multi-writers. Other filesystems like Redhat’s GFS2 or Oracle’s OCFS can do it but it’s not cheap or easy.

Tl;dr summary: my suggestion is iscsi for the DB and NFS for the other stuff.

billwashere,

Man NC is moronic. Replace all the lost tobacco money with weed money… I mean come on. Should be a no brainer.

billwashere,

I’m stealing this list. And I’m a 52 yo man.

billwashere,

Jesus, I thought this was for one month. I was like “they sold how many Wii’s in November 2023”!?!?

billwashere,

A lot of kids need help at 18, not just ones that age out of foster care. The difference is most kids have the safety net of a family and just aren’t shoved out the door to fend for themselves. It takes time, resources, and drive to get the momentum you need to self-sustain. And honestly sometimes a lot of luck. And even then sometimes it’s not enough (I know, I have a step-son almost 40 that’s almost always teetering on the edge of collapse).

I empathize with these kids that fall through the cracks and don’t have that safety net. I feel for a lot of these millennials and gen-z kids that don’t have the same opportunities I had graduating in the late 80s. But I especially feel for these kids that feel so alone and desolate.

billwashere,

And it isn’t like you become an adult at 18. Hell I’m still figuring it out in my 50s.

And really, pray for her?! Thoughts and prayers don’t buy food or provide a roof over your head. It’s pointless and almost predatory.

billwashere,

Because in college you’re basically in an extremely target rich environment.

billwashere,

Well, these two are not mutually exclusive statements 😀

billwashere,

This dude is just waiting for that plastic shit to get off of his nice warm spot.

billwashere,

Hello fellow Raleighen… Raleighite… Raleighian?

billwashere,

Used to live in Cary, now in Clayton (house prices… geez). Work at State so I see that giant Redhat building everyday. Hell I’m on Centennial campus so they used to be down the street.

billwashere,

I read this as “show penises in Russia” and all I could think about was George Costanza and shrinkage.

billwashere,

The non tinfoil hat group should develop a secret sign, like a manager telling a runner on first to steal, so you do not have to suffer fools.

Like ear tug, ear tug, nose scratch, and then adjust your belt. I want credit if you use this one 😂

billwashere,

This is brilliant!!!

billwashere,

I was nervous the whole time he was up there. Until they landed.

billwashere,

No government holds companies responsible for anything. It’s no better in the states. We as citizens have one purpose, to make the rich richer.

As the French revolutionary Voltaire put it: “The comfort of the rich depends on an abundant supply of the poor.”

billwashere,

Can. Have in the past. Don’t anymore.

billwashere,

My birthday was the epoch so I resemble this comment.

billwashere,

They aren’t settlers. They are fucking bullies picking on helpless people.

Hamas are terrorists, but most Palestinians aren’t Hamas.

billwashere,

Very nice.

But strike for using Twitter and it being WAY too early 😀

billwashere,

Oh it serves a purpose. Sucking billions of dollars away from programs that actually do some good.

billwashere,

Oh how I miss the days of Evercrack.

billwashere,

Why have I watched this like 20 times?!?!

Go sports!!

Elon Musk gives X employees one year to replace your bank - ‘You won’t need a bank account... it would blow my mind if we don’t have that rolled out by the end of next year.’ (www.theverge.com)

“If it involves money. It’ll be on our platform. Money or securities or whatever. So, it’s not just like send $20 to my friend. I’m talking about, like, you won’t need a bank account.”...

billwashere,

There is no way in hell I’d trust this chucklefuck with anything I think is important, let alone money.

Mike Johnson Said Same-Sex Marriage Would Lead to People Marrying Their Pets, Wanted to Sentence Abortion Doctors to “Hard Labor” (www.vanityfair.com)

By now you’ve likely heard that Representative Mike Johnson—the congressman Republicans finally elected as the new Speaker of the House after 22 days of chaos—played a significant role in the plot to overturn the 2020 election, a lowlight on his résumé that is obviously deeply concerning for the future of democracy. Also...

billwashere,

You should live your pets, but you shouldn’t “love” your pets.

billwashere,

And neither is a doc file, but most OSes would open up a compatible word processor.

billwashere,

One thing Apple is good at is waiting until the market is ripe and then releasing a better product. Like mp3 players, phones, tablets, etc.

billwashere,

And it seems to not be just Siri. Every Alexa device in my house has gotten more deaf and more stupid. But yes Siri has declined recently I agree.

billwashere,

I haven’t had that happen yet. But yeah I would too.

billwashere,

I love this technique. I’ve used it to make many signs.

billwashere,

And the parents need to have a serious talking to as well. This shit is just wrong and often speaks to parents not paying attention.

billwashere,

I’m not even close to a video person but this type of video really makes this stuff understandable and accessible to us laypersons. Very well done.

billwashere,

My 6 least favorite words…

Audible hopes you’ve enjoyed this program

billwashere,

I agree … it sure looks gone to me.

Interesting.

billwashere,

These are beautiful until you have to replace a cable. And in addition you feel like a heel having to undo this art.
