The link thing is fantastic news. Thanks!

Go and have a chat with them. Perhaps as a half joke buy them a really nice pair of slippers for Christmas.

As an aside, I did once share an upstairs flat with a woman who had a prosthetic leg. We had wooden floors. The people downstairs were not amused, though she tried to move around as quietly as possible

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads (kbin.social)

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

You are taking this massive “if” and building a whole policy of preemptive panic around it:

if we become dependent on it for content, and our best bet at avoiding that is defederate.

And if we don’t and we defederate, we’ve just cut off potentially interesting conversations with interesting people based on ideology.

@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

What's completely nonsensical is to act like there aren't any strings attached when there are obviously strings attached.

Let's look at the strings

Meta is trying to maximize profit. Anyone who thinks that Zuckerberg suddenly cares about an open fediverse even though its values (people being on multiple instances, everything being transparent, no one person or group having too much control, etc.) go directly against his goal is either delusional or very misinformed about what these for-profit tech companies do.

That's all true. But that's not really a string - it's just a fact of any for-profit organisation that sets up an instance

It strongly benefits him to take users from Mastodon, Firefish, Misskey, Kbin, etc., and allowing ourselves to depend on him for fediverse activity puts him in a prime position to do it.

But he can do that anyway. And in fact people who who want to interact with the 140million ish Threads users currently have one option - join Threads. With federation I can communicate with Threads users without joining Threads. That needs to be factored in.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

You say: The people who are at currently at this point have already gone to Threads. Then you say that if traffic from Threads is subsequently withdrawn, all the people who haven't already gone to Threads will... go to Threads.

You are basing it on the idea that Threads federating is a temporary move designed to advertise Threads. It's a theory. But seems unlikely. If Threads goes away again, I suspect that the current Fediverse userbase will, by and large still be here.

RTR#43 Break time (kbin.social)

I just got back from a over five-hour walk with my dog. I had promised him that for a long time, and both of us really needed it ;-) Now, a quick lunch, and I still have an evening workout ahead of me. Today, I decided to take a break from coding, although I probably won't resist doing something, and at night I'll probably tweak...

can't believe there's no picture of the dog :)

The one unsafe thing in car play for me is the tiny stupid UI element needed to switch betweeen voice directions/alerts only/silent/.

I will quite often want to switch modes while on a long journey - full directions while driving on backstreets, alerts only while on motorways.

Have yet to find the Siri command to switch between them. Anyone know of one?

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

So. What do you suggest they in practice?

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

But what should they specifically do in this case to improve the situation - got any actual suggestions?

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Signal sends notifications via Apple's push notification servers. So I'm still not quite clear what are suggesting. That apps run continuously in the background. each doing real-time polling of their respective servers for notifications? Because your battery ain't going to last long.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

That sounds like a cracking idea, the suggestion is that something in Apple's ToS prevents this generally - but is that the case, if Signal manages it?

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Hang on - what exactly did they lie about?

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

So rather that talking in generalities what specific lies have they told about respect for privacy?

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

That’s a claim. You haven’t given any tangible evidence that it’s a lie, you just talk in handywavy generalities

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

No, the article is clear evidence that they are imperfect - not that they don't generally care about user privacy. In general the work they have done on privacy has been pretty good. Apple mandating end-to-end encryption might be something that they sholuld have done - and that's a reasonable criticism, but it looks like it is possible for individual app makers to encrypt their notifications: . There's syill the metadata, of course.

If I am being paid to shill for Apple they are being particularly tardy with their payments. But to answer your question, no - I'm a user who is privacy conscious and thinks Apple does a reasonable job.

I am, however always interested in knowing about where they are falling down so I can mitigate. General handy wavy accusations don't really help me practically - or indeed anyone.

The Fediverse is an experiment and should/needs to be robust enough to cope with large commercial instances. I’m happy to see how this goes before blocking if it goes badly

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

They may. We’ll see. But us running around with our hair on fire before we see what actually happens feels a bit off

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

It's an existing feature of Kbin and it;s quite cool

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

If Ukraine had initially launched an attack on Russia and killed 1,200 mainlycivilians, taken 200+ hostages and thrown in a bit of organised gang rape, I doubt Ukraine would be receiving its current level of support, and there may even have been some support for retaliatory action by Russia.

That’s not to say that Israel’s current appalling treatment of Palestinian civilians is justified

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

The two conflicts are not even remotely comparable.

That was largely my point.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Given that I was replying to a message drawing equivalence, you'll see that I was saying that they weren't really equivalent, in that Ukraine hadn't mounted an attack on Russian civilians. Hope that helps.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

But they don’t need to provide official support, they just need to tick a box and say “yeah, we don’t support this, do it at your own risk.”

I suspect you need to factor in the efforts needed to prevent cheaters exploiting the unofficial client and spoiling the experience for other gamers

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

I presume this is a jibe at me, but you don't tell me why I'm egregiously wrong.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

You know that you can block any instance yourself on kbin?

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

If you are talking about RCS - the encryption aspect is a google proprietary extension

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Message works, it’s seamless and does a good job. Sure I’ll change to something else if I need to send images or group chat with Android uses, but in the UK that generally means WhatsApp, which I am definitely not keen on.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

The default messaging protocol is SMS. Unless you are talking with another Apple user

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Meanwhile, in the UK WhatsApp is the default

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Really? That seems odd. I’ve never had a problem sending reasonable quality photos to Android users and I can’t see a business reason why Apple would degrade image sending purposefully- it would drive its own users to get third party apps.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

I don't think that's correct - and I can't find anything that substantiates the claim with a quick Google. Source?

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Seriously, it's done. Let it rest in piece.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

I think elements of it were a bit on the nose and preachy, but on the other hand, I guess there are a lot of people who still need to be preached at.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

So - how do they get in and out of the cities?

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

They work well in the UK for people visiting a city. I’m not sure they work for residents. Parking for around 2 million vehicles surrounding London would be … something. Even 1 million

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

As someone who cycles to work and uses public transport where possible, there are still plenty of occasions where a car is very useful and a rental wouldn’t cut it.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Agreed. Once we’ve changed shop locations, redesigned the roads, revolutionised public transport I’ll definitely look into it.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Yes it does. So lets have a look. Let's say I want to take my family of four down to Devon to see my folks this weekend. On trainline, the cheapest return fair is £239, at not very convenient times. Better times brings the price to £362.

Add in the price if tube and bus at either end and you are looking at about £400 (a bit over $500) to get down there for the weekend. It's expensive? Yes it is - and partly because of the limited capacity on rail.

Now that could absolutely could be improved with additional rail infrastructure - but not by this weekend.

Of course, if I was travelling by myself - that's about £66 return and I have done that in the past rather than driving
