amanaftermidnight,

This is why I don’t get why the 9th of November is such a big deal.

amanaftermidnight,

There’s a lot of artists on the microblog side of the fediverse. It’s just that crossing the boundary to the threadiverse side is a big hassle. Not to mention the one way state of federation between lemmy and mastodon right now makes the other half invisible from this side.

amanaftermidnight,

Tablets don’t have gpios tho

amanaftermidnight,

IMHO video links should always be YouTube first, then third party mirror second, in the body or comments. Here are the reasons:

  1. YouTube is the primary source. Always prioritize the primary source when you’re sourcing.
  2. Think of the URL being shared as the primary key to a database record. Lemmy can use it to detect dupes. With YouTube URL there’s like 3 forms, discounting timestamps. With piped links the possibility expanded to 3+(number of piped instances on the web). This massively increases the likelihood of accidental reposts.
  3. Give people a choice of whether they want to watch on the original site, or on a piped instance of their own choosing. When you link to a piped instance link you rob people of that choice.
  4. A piped instance can choke or go offline at any time. YouTube is close to 100% uptime.
  5. Userscript wise, it’s trivial to map YouTube URLs to a user’s piped instance of choice, but it’s so much more tedious to detect and map every single piped instance.
amanaftermidnight,

Let’s just keep multi level cells to just flash memory.

Who picks names off of dictionaries 😂

They should have used Source missing texture.

edit: I’m liking this already.

amanaftermidnight,

most USB connectors, have a situation where there’s a male prong in the middle of a ‘female’ connector.

A little role-reversal [plug-n-]play 😳

amanaftermidnight,

I was put off of one instance by community feud with a self-appointed HOA-type representative, and on another by downvotes on any opinion comment that I made on otherwise empty posts. Switching platform sadly can’t fix the problem of awful people. 😔

Eine freie, leichtgewichtige YouTube App für Android

amanaftermidnight,

About time, I guess. I uninstalled it the other day because 100% of my YouTube playbacks errored out so it’s beyond useless to me.

Also hope they add fedi logins since I’m here now. It’d make commenting on peertube possible in app.

amanaftermidnight,

imagine being that carbrained one of the first things you reinvent after an apocalypse is the car.

amanaftermidnight,

Most disingenuous post ever.

The image shown is a dude with a browser dev console, probably measuring a div for the its CSS size (which do support centimeters and inches).

In python, 4 spaces is just enough spacing between indent levels. And if your levels get too deep it’s a sign that you’re not being pythonic. Nesting too deep is the problem, not the whitespacing being significant.

amanaftermidnight,

My editor turns tabs into 4 spaces. No more “mixing tabs and spaces” errors afterwards.

amanaftermidnight,

A quite apt metaphor of Man drowning in problems that can’t just be burned away.

amanaftermidnight,

You must imagine selfhosters happy.

amanaftermidnight,

I remember the meme phases r/prequelmemes went through. And now here we’re having memes from all the phases being [re]posted all over again.

amanaftermidnight,

Sounds like Qui-Gon is Qui-Done of the bs

We need a more user-friendly approach to telling people about the Fediverse (kbin.social)

I'm assuming most of us here want a large community. The reality is most people aren't into technology nearly as much as many of the people actually on the Fediverse. For other people who are into tech (like myself and a lot of people here), the federation technology itself being promoted as a core component of the appeal makes...

amanaftermidnight,

I’ve been thinking about how a short questionaire during onboarding would be great. You answer a branching set of 10 yes/no, one or the other, questions max regarding how they’re using socmed, whether they’re into this and that, that leads them to an instance that suits them the most.

amanaftermidnight,

And this doesn’t even cover the Madison scandal.

Please follow !linustechtips for more info and developments regarding the LMG scandals.

amanaftermidnight,

I have a fwiend in Wome called Biggus Dickus.

SILENCE!

amanaftermidnight,

I mean, what better place to find safe harbor other than Port Royal itself?

amanaftermidnight,

Who would’ve thought it’s the publishers themselves that’s doing the Fahrenheit 451-ing

amanaftermidnight,

I seek that shit when I’m spooning biryani onto my plate at events/buffets. The rice stuck in between the bark is the best thing ever.

YSK: You can use alexandrite (alternative lemmy web front-end) to switch your default post layout and easily switch between lemmy accounts (alexandrite.app)

I use alexandrite to switch between different lemmy instances and change the default post layout to card style. When I first started using lemmy, the I found the difference between the reddit and lemmy in the post feed to be jarring as I was used to a card style layout....

amanaftermidnight,

A single caveat for lemmy.world users: Since lemmy.world is an ongoing conflict zone network load-wise, trying to log into your account every time the app switches accounts will often fail. Best keep your user account logged in through the default frontend at all times as backup.

US Navy sailor's mom encouraged him to pass military details to China, prosecutor says (apnews.com)

The mother of a U.S. Navy sailor charged with providing sensitive military information to China encouraged him to cooperate with a Chinese intelligence officer, telling her son it might help him get a job with the Chinese government someday, the prosecution said Tuesday.

amanaftermidnight,

Crack down on all Chinese police stations in the country.

amanaftermidnight,

They can try add more syntax. Maybe extend the @instance paradigm to posts too, so /post/[email protected] asks for post at foo.bar instead of locally. They can even make it redirect to a local federated post if it’s already federated to local.

amanaftermidnight,

it’s a theoretical example for a mechanism that doesn’t yet exist. you try it now of course it’s not acting like how I proposed.

amanaftermidnight,

I suppose you have never done any server routing coding and has no idea what I’m talking about. I don’t have the gift of eli5-ing this, so I have nothing more to say.

amanaftermidnight,

Let’s go shuck some scoots, boys!

amanaftermidnight,

you can’t be mad at both subreddits being too large and controlled by a few power mods, and lemmy having too many duplicate communities all run by different mods.

it is the core virtue of the federation model in the first place, in that if a community on an instance goes down, you have the others as backup.

past a certain size, the content that comes through subs/comms passes by too fast to be digested in time, and other content gets buried, so smaller communities should be more digestable.

as for cross-platform user verification check, lemmy can implement mastodon’s method of instance A giving you a secret to be put to instance B, and if it sees that secret from B, then it knows the user at B is you.

amanaftermidnight,

If all parties use the same cracked version, and play on LAN, then yes.

Be very wary of malware though. I’ve had one cracked CS1.6 infect me (and presumably all my buddies) on a LAN party at the uni dorm.

amanaftermidnight,

It’s concrete, not cement. Cement is a component, not the end product.

If you leave a bag of portland cement outside and let the rain cures it then that’s a cement block.

And the article mentions both but in contradicting contexts. Is “cement blocks” actually “concrete blocks”? Then later it mentions cement being incorporated into the resulting concrete, so what was the previously mentioned “cement blocks”? Nothing made of cement in the shape of blocks are ever incorporated into concrete. Cement powder is.

Anyway, cool concept. In the mean time, the world also needs to figure out how to make concrete more green, because manufacturing cement releases a lot of greenhouse gases.

amanaftermidnight,

The Lemmy API seem to support it, so does some third party UI (e.g. alexandrite* which I’m using right now). The official UI for some reason doesn’t.

*you can try it out at a.lemmy.world

How is pirating software a thing?

I understand that sharing video, photos, documents etc. is relatively safe because the data is not executed in the processor as instructions. How come people are willing to download and install pirated software though? How can one be confident that it does not contain malicious addons? Are people just don’t know the risks? Or...

amanaftermidnight, (edited )

This. It feels more likely to get malware-infested downloads from no-name warez websites than trusted trackers.

amanaftermidnight,

Same with every npc in Black Mesa being the exact same height, males and females alike.

Everybody gangsta until Texans become allergic to BBQs

amanaftermidnight,

Everybody who realized they’ve been eating gay bananas all this time: 😨

amanaftermidnight,

Idk man, I think it has to do more with size rather than seeded/seedless. I’ve had small and large bananas both, all seedless. Small ones are always straight, big ones always curved. It’s just how they grow out of the petals.
