This Comm is Racist Thought-Terminating Nonsense (hexbear.net)

@goat, you are the only person who posts on this server, with zero engagement. No likes, no comments, nothing (keep in mind I’m sorting by “active” lmfao). You are posting complete nonsense to yourself, it’s pathetic. Edit: this post has more likes than any other one on this entire comm in months💀...

Zeppo,

At the same time, I was just rolling my eyes at a hexbear thread about how there is no such thing as racism against white people, since real racism MUST be institutional racism and colonialism. So it’s okay to use any anti-white slur. Reminds me of how their basic philosophy is that the US is bad, therefore Stalinist USSR, Putin Russia and the CCP must be great.

In China, of course, clearly Xi and the Han hold no power in society and are sad victims of white people being mean to them.

Zeppo,

maybe flaxseed? Not as nutty, but they’re somewhat similar. Crushed peanuts could work too.

Zeppo,

A mortar and pestle, or even a very quick whir in a blender would work.

Zeppo,

I always enjoyed NYT Pitchbot. Sandra Boynton and Roz Chast would be pretty cool too.

Zeppo,

It gets so much worse after that, though. I have no idea why people have children or some people are so incredibly stoked/obsessed with it.

Zeppo,

So… nobody would be around to lament that, so why would it matter?

Zeppo,

That’s true, some kids are very cool to hang out with. They’re just people, after all, and everyone is different. Children of course are very much a reflection of their environment, with a few exceptions.

I guess what I object to is people who think the only reason they exist is to reproduce, and that somehow it’s extremely virtuous, like they’re doing the world a favor. What’s the point of living only to have children? That’s what a virus or something does. There needs to be something more interesting about a person, more going on than ‘I reproduced’.

Zeppo, (edited )

Yes, how’d you guess? And yes, that is on purpose. I’m also quite aware that people who are parents think it’s odd or unusual to not want to do that. I’m not saying I think children are ‘bad’ or parents regret their choices (although realistically, some do) … just that personally I don’t get it, same as I don’t understand why some people would want to have 5 dogs. I’m over 40 and have known plenty of people who are parents and mostly, they seem to like it. I’ve had several girlfriends who wanted to have children and I was basically uh, no, you should do that with someone else. But also my life is pretty fucked up. Maybe if I had better health and had chosen a more stable career I’d feel differently.

Zeppo,

I have a theory which is: just fuck straws

Zeppo,

How about a spoon? Anyway, I would speculate that boba straws constitute a very small portion of straws used.

Zeppo,

That’s reasonable, but I imagine far more than 90% of straws dispensed are to people who don’t physically require a straw.

Zeppo,

Either! Whatever works for you.

Zeppo,

The Eastman photo deserves an honorable mention…

Zeppo,

This makes me happy to have been blessed with a Sega Master System

youtu.be/RSxRErTQRZU

Zeppo,

At some point not long ago I was discussing the great sound on the Amiga and Sega Genesis vs. even 1990 era PCs and someone pointed out there was an option to get AdLib and later sound cards. I never actually heard one, though… would have been nice if more manufacturers included one back then.

Zeppo,

It wouldn’t be difficult to set up a site to automatically generate an image of the headline text.

  • Zeppo,

i have never once wondered this

    Zeppo,

I agree with some of your conclusions, but not others, and also not the overall concept. Yes, Reddit is not going to die or disappear. Twitter, I’m not sure how it will be thriving in the future, but it will likely still exist.

Essentially your main point is that the style of Facebook, mainly, a walled garden with profiling and targeted advertising, has beat more open commercial models. In terms of profitability, that is true. Companies based on that model, Google and Facebook, have been making a lot more money for years than companies less focused on user identity and advertising, like Reddit and Twitter. As far as whether there is profit in anonymity, I definitely don’t agree that non-profiled users are “indistinguishable from bots”, but yes, companies can make a lot more by abusing user privacy. Some people are growing tired of this, but not enough or for long enough. I also don’t agree that anonymous people are ‘nobodies’ who don’t post anything useful. Some of the most popular members of reddit either have no public identity, or it’s superfluous. Did I ever need to see a photo of gallowboob? No. Do I know who PoppinKREME is? No, and I don’t need to, other than their content. Anonymous content does make money for social media sites because even if those people had their ‘real names’ and profile pics, it would make no difference at all. Consumers? Sure, but only because ad profiling and selling data of real identities is more profitable. This is not even close to new as Facebook has been doing that to the tune of billions for over a decade.

Facebook as a product is not really thriving, and the only way Zuckerberg has found to grow his company is to buy and imitate other companies - bought IG, Whatsapp, copied Snapchat, now copied Twitter. I’d call that the Microsoft Model. Microsoft still exists and does quite well, but not to the same extent they did 20 years ago. Time will run out for Zucka when someone makes a new hit product that he can’t purchase or copy. We don’t know yet what that will be. Another interesting issue is Reddit, Twitter and Facebook have tried to move to charging money monthly vs only advertising.

The internet as we know it is not dead because my internet was not Twitter. I mean, you’re posting this on Lemmy. The internet does not have to be about making investors and CEOs billions of dollars.

    Zeppo,

For some reason this song has been promoted and heralded by people who specialize in lying to and manipulating the public on behalf of wealthy interests. That makes me a little skeptical.

    Zeppo,

I can barely handle a 8 minute online video

    Zeppo,

Previously he had said one of the most ridiculous things ever, that “Elon is the singular solution I trust. I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness.” Simply revolting.

    Zeppo,

It was an incredibly stupid idea pushed by foreign propaganda and complete morons. So, it seems this is one example of what happens when people do something incredibly stupid.

    Zeppo,

Well yeah, otherwise I’m not going to make it there

    Zeppo,

I did file to dispute the charge with my bank. A debit card is a credit card that works with cash in your bank account vs. a credit account, which is unfortunate since it’s easier to reverse credit vs debit charges.

    Zeppo,

One problem is I’m dealing with several different entities - the originating dealer, the return dealer, and national customer service. It’s not clear who to call. The local dealer told me I could only get a refund from the national service and the national service told me to call the originating dealer and the local dealer.

I’ve read the contract and it doesn’t seem to cover this circumstance, where equipment is faulty and roadside assistance takes 11 hours to fix the problem. Mainly I’m trying to figure out how perturbed to be… I think many people would ask for a refund on the original payment as well as the additional one.

    Zeppo,

Kind of too late for both of those. It is not clear how else I’d transport my possessions 500 miles. Having it all shipped by freight would have cost a lot more.

    Zeppo,

I definitely should have walked in and asked them to fix the tire immediately. There is no way the person who gave it to me could have not noticed, since he drove it to the front of the store and it had a warning light and text on the console. I assumed it was merely low and not damaged, though.

    Zeppo,

I did initiate a chargeback/dispute because the card I was using only has 1 day after a charge to do so, unlike most which allow 30 days.

That’s what I wondered - I think that most people would be asking for some of the original fee back as well. Sleeping at a rest stop in the truck isn’t great, and the suggestions that I should drive at 1 am in the middle of nowhere with the flat tire was perhaps even worse. The truck was also missing all four valve caps in the first place. And yeah, I should have brought it to their attention immediately when I stepped in the truck and saw the low pressure warning.

    Zeppo,

Yep, it’s a business account and has different rules than their consumer accounts. No joke, you have one day to report disputes. They do 30 for consumer cards. I have had other accounts in the past which said 45, 60 and 90 days.

    Zeppo,

I could, but I don’t really use any social media these days. I guess I could post on reddit or instagram.

There’s still a chance the truck company could refund me before the bank paperwork goes through, which will likely take weeks. The rental company is supposed to ‘investigate’ and call me back - and if they don’t, the dispute is the right path. I also would not be out of line to ask for a partial refund on the original payment since the truck was faulty in the first place. Considering how horrible everything has been, I’m probably better off being banned as a customer than ever renting from them again.

    Zeppo, (edited )

It does seem absurd, I agree. One problem is it isn’t a credit card - it was a debit card, which is the only one I have. I was informed of this on the phone with them some time ago… perhaps I should call them and confirm it’s actually the policy, for future reference.

    Zeppo, (edited )

I appreciate the input, but that is not quite accurate. I agree probably they can’t refund it now, but I haven’t accused them of fraud and that is not all a chargeback is for.

My bank has a page where they explain “What is the difference between a fraud case and a dispute case?”

Fraud is defined as third party unauthorized use of a card. Common fraud situations include:

    • Swiped transactions after the card is lost or stolen
    • Internet charges at sites where the cardholder has not made a purchase or waiting for an order
    • A swiped transaction appearing out of the cardholder’s home area and the cardholder still has their card (counterfeiting).

Dispute situations are defined as a disagreement between the merchant and the cardholder where the cardholder is asking for their Issuer’s assistance. Visa and MasterCard regulations offer assistance with a variety of dispute reasons. Some of the more common reasons are:

    • Merchandise or service not received: The card has been charged for a transaction(s), but the merchandise or service has not been received
    • Merchandise returned: The card has been charged for a transaction(s), but the merchandise has been returned and there has been no credit given by the merchant.
    • Duplicate processing: The card has been charged for a transaction twice, when only one charge was authorized.
    • Unrecognized: The card has been charged for a transaction that is not recognized. A copy of the documentation received from the merchant to certify the charge (sales draft) will be sent to the cardholder for review

There are additional dispute types not listed above. Please contact Cardmember Service for more information on specific scenarios.

So this is a dispute, not a claim of fraud. It’s a situation where I disagree that a charge or amount is proper, feel I’d like a refund or am unwilling to pay, and they’re being difficult/inattentive about it. Fraud is criminal conduct, but the problem a dispute is meant to solve is errors or shitty business practices.

    Zeppo,

I sort of hated some books like that also. Anyway, I think it was more meant to be an allegory about society than a realistic tale of something that might actually happen.

    Zeppo,

That’s the thing… it’s not really about society collapsing or being stranded on an island. It’s about human nature and how people set up societies.

    I F*cked up and I need help.

Hey guys. I’m new to Linux and I’m running Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon. Yesterday I have f*cked up. I was testing things in users and geve myself standart priveledges insted of Admin ones I had from beggining and then restarted PC. I then tried log back into users tab and change myself back to Admin but even tho the password is...

    Zeppo,

One of my favorites has always been “sudo passwd”, which works for some reason

    Zeppo,

sudo should only ask for your user password. What do you mean “sudo root”? Do you mean “su”? That would require the root password.

    Zeppo,

I’ve had to set it up manually. May depend on the distro, I suppose. su won’t work without the root password.

    Zeppo,

It’s a matter of distro and the installation process. I must note, I installed Linux dozens of times from 1999-2012 and not as much since then. Back then, while of course one set the root password, it didn’t ask about sudo privileges during installation of Debian, Ubuntu or Mandrake. And yes, that’s true, you can always boot from a different installation (such as a Live CD) except it is more complex if it is an encrypted filesystem.

    Zeppo,

This is nice because one of the most annoying things has been to randomly watch a video and then they start suggesting all of this content that is not relevant or is bothersome. Like, watch a video on certain topics one time and all of a sudden “check out Ben Shapiro!”

Surely Google is still tracking watch history for analysis for ads and profiling though, right?

    Zeppo,

It’s difficult to tell if it is an ad, or simply recommending popular relevant services. This would definitely be an insidious method given how much people trust the advice of ChatGPT.

I think that OpenAI would be required to disclose that some info is there due to paid advertising or sponsorship if that was the case, same as websites and videos disclose it.

    Zeppo,

Wow, that was excruciatingly insane and dumb. What I learned: she has to go to work.

    Zeppo,

Storm Shadow sounds like one of the X-Men

    Zeppo,

Nice Whale Shark can’t really hug you because of the way flipplers work but if Whale Shark was able to, they would.

    Zeppo,

whale shark sent me an email and shark says whale shark believes in u~___~
