all of those things only harm the human experience and end up making people live less!! no drug!! why do people like these things if they only harm your body… i don’t understand… gluten is bad for your heart too
I have Celiac, so I particularly hate gluten. But I recognize that for most people, it’s innocuous - it’s just a grain protein that I and some other people have a particular problem with, for no real reason. I’d love if American society (and plenty around the world) would de-emphasize wheat and barley vs. other grains, as often wheat flour is used in dishes simply out of habit or convenience. It’s also particularly bad the way the US does the glyphosate ‘dessication’ bullshit, but that’s not about gluten itself.
Anyway, ‘why do people like drugs’ is a very different question. Your premise that people get no benefits from them is technically correct in a long-term view, I guess… but most people aren’t looking at “will I be glad I drank beer 50 years from now?”. Sometimes people manage to consider that their lives would be better without a certain substance, and can see harm in the present - other people actually don’t ever have any issues with a substance and it’s a net positive, for them.

I rented a moving truck, to be driven 400 miles away. When I got the into the truck for the first time outside of the store, I noticed it the console said low tire pressure on one tire. I said “oh, I’m not messing with it now, probably just needs to be topped off” and drove away. Then it was fine for a couple days as I loaded the truck, then once I finished loading and left… I filled the tire up… it kept going low as I drove, though. So I had to stop 5-6 times in the next 250 miles and top it off. Finally I inspected it and there was a tear around the fill valve. This was in a very remote area of a freeway, basically the middle of nowhere, 60 miles in either direction to a town bigger than like 500 people. I stopped safely at a rest stop but it ended up taking the truck company’s roadside assistance 10 hours to fully get me back on the road. Then they ended up charging me for an extra day at the return site, giving me this huge run around on the phone, and I had to file a credit card chargeback for the extra day (thankfully, it was successful).
So obviously I should have told the rental place immediately “wtf this truck says it has a low tire” or at the very least, gone back before I left.
auto-bans like that are so dumb because it could be I went into some not-allowed sub and said “wow, this sucks, everyone here is a deluded idiot” and then you get banned from some other sub for “participating” in the Bad one.

Musk offered an $8 per month price to King as a counteroffer after proposing a higher number. King scoffed at the idea of paying for a blue verification badge at all, which led to Musk gifting the author with an entirely free Twitter Blue subscription.
Wow, I’m sure Stephen King is stoked to be getting a free subscription basically worth nothing rather than paying $96 a year.
Lemmy does already have that available on the backend… it’s a UI decision to not display it.
I don’t feel like it ever worked exactly how reddit envisioned. 100 helpful comments in small communities might end up with less karma than one well-placed joke in a major community.
I don’t feel like it’s super helpful as far as anti-spam, personally. Looking over someone’s most recent posts tells me enough, and communities that have karma limits are just annoying. People looking to spam can easily get around that (start a community, 10 accounts, vote each other up, or just make a few reposts of popular content) while it discourages legitimate new users.
I like that on kbin karma is not a highly visible number on profiles… on desktop at least, you have to look at the little stat bar and scroll over to see the number.
back when they rolled that out (Bush era) was when they really started assaulting people with vacuous catchphrases. Opposition to the Iraq was was answered with ‘support the troops!’ which made no sense… okay, I support them, I don’t want them to go get PTSD from urban warfare and killing civilians and leave their lives here to sit around in a tent in the desert at 130 degrees. Another one was if you opposed anything Bush/Cheney was doing, “Why do you hate America??”, which is obviously a ridiculously loaded question and very shitty debate tactic.
With the faux nipple, “no matter how hot it is, you’ll always look cold,” Kardashian shares in a titillating advertisement, adding that “unlike the icebergs, these aren’t going anywhere.”
They show as & on the mobile web interface for various instances. I would say it’s something improperly done with what are called HTML entities. HTML entities are a way of encoding various elements that have meaning in HTML so they can be displayed, without being interpreted as HTML by the browser, which could not only break a layout but have security implications. So the titles are sanitized to prevent injection attacks but somehow are not stored/output in a way that they display properly.
I agree ‘sagging’ is incredibly dumb and an odd trend. It was the sanctimonious old-guy way he tried to lecture people about it, which seemed interesting when it turned out he was hardly a role model.

I evaluated these and most were confusing comments about happening and not happening. -120 on a Lemmy comment is pretty severe though, so maybe I should evaluate the context.
What a ridiculous idea. Proving that wifi exists in a polling station means nothing, and gathering the info from people’s phones is definitely a privacy violation in a vote setting. This psycho and his devices should not be allowed anywhere near where people vote in any state.
Haha, well… just so you know, it’s 40 minutes of Lindell freaking out and insulting the questioning lawyer mixed with whining. It was horrible but also the kind of spectacle from which it is difficult to look away. The court reporter refused to return for the second day.
Some people have a hard time believing this, but white people are sometimes killed by police too. The statistics are that black people are killed at a rate approximately twice as high as their occurrence in the population. Being white does NOT automatically mean you can get away with whatever you want and are never treated poorly by police.
Anyway my points is that people act like “if that person was black they 100% would have been killed” and “if that person was white they 100% would have gotten off with a warning and been bought a cheeseburger” but that isn’t totally accurate.
What numbers? Anyway, my view is that police shouldn’t be killing anyone. Making it a racial issue distracts from that and plays into the race war that wealthy people have drummed up to distract from financial oppression.
the Pew Charitable Trust wrote in a recent analysis that research had “consistently found that homelessness in an area is driven by housing costs.”
Well, yeah, and we can thank investors, landlords and capital funds for that. Housing in Denver is ridiculously expensive currently… and it was bad but not to this extent a few years ago. A house next door to me that was $250k and $1000 a month a few years ago is now $450 and $2100 a month.
