RTR#29 Another boring update: Categories and bug fixes (kbin.social)

Today, I wanted to introduce you to Categories - a new feature that is essentially a multi-mags view. A new tab will appear in the user panel where you can create categories (public or private) and then add magazines to them (local or remote). In the magazine listing, there will be another tab that will list public categories...

Ooh fancy. Doesn't quite work with infinite scrolling though.

/kbin RTR#18 Platform optimization and internal API testing (kbin.social)

Today marks the eighteenth day since returning to the project. During this time, I've managed to address critical areas that required optimization. This will be noticeable in the page loading speed and overall user experience. It's about halfway through my intended optimization efforts, but for now, I'm satisfied with the...

That is a significant bit of tuning there!

For an organisation hosting as many companies data as this one I'd expect automated tape at a minimum. Of course, if the attacker had the time to start messing with the tape that's lost as well but it's unlikely.

Blocking any domain seems to make certain stuff disappear (kbin.social)

I moderate @mcsuggestions, and today, I noticed that my comments on the two most recent threads didn't show up when I was logged in. After some experimentation, I figured out that whenever I had any domain blocked, all comments on those threads disappeared. From what I can tell in this magazine, others are experiencing the same...

This window gets direct sunlight for 2/3's of the day. I hope it's not that, I can't give it much more 😂

It's not weird. I'd appreciate it if it were me.

VerifiablyMrWonka,

It's imgur. They're blocking "bots". Sadly, they've identified the thumbnailer as a bot.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Why unacceptable? As the runner of an instance I get to have control over my own little walled garden - it's literally the primary strength of federation. If anyone, at any time, is unhappy with the content moderation policies of the admins of their Mastodon/Calckey/Peertube/Lemmy/kbin instance then they are able to find a new home - or maybe start one of their own, like dbzer0 did.

Only in the same way that stealing code from a PoC would make me racist, stealing code from a Jew would make me anti-semitic or stealing code from a woman would make me sexist.

Since, without proof of any of that you're just making shit up I'm going to go with the reason that your post is being downvoted is that ITS JUST FUCKING STUPID.

From what I've seen the authors of the papers have listed the zenbleed mitigation impact as "statistically insignificant".

I imagine Larian care. Especially since they're pushing Steamdeck support.

The reason this is a "supported platform" issue is that the developers of Hogwarts legacy know their supported platforms support XeSS, so any work that is not "just turn it on" is additional work for no gain.

Gentoo ricer reporting in.

Ran a stage 1 Gentoo build whilst at uni back in the early 00's. Man building that on my Athlon took an absolute age - and there was no easy way for me to read docs whilst I was putting it together.

Still, ran Gnome DE and did my dissertation on it.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

I can't get it to run past the Nvidia GameWorks logo. Just a straight crash back to SteamUI every time.

I've not changed any settings. If it's deck verified it should just work right?

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Tried it. Also a whole bunch of other versions incl GE.

Found someone on Facebook with the same problem so at least it's not just me eh?!

Looks like we've both got Cryotools and decky power tools installed so it could be that.

Given I uninstalled it and its huge I cant check that just yet though.

3 of us! 3 of us! 3 of us!

I followed the example of the other person on Facebook and did a factory reset. Luckily I have most of my stuff on the SD card but i'm still going to have to set up a bunch of stuff again.

But more to the point, it worked!

I did a fresh install of BG onto deck storage (not SD) just to be sure (which still took forever cause 122GB) but I'm in and playing!

This was an issue at the start of July. I would hope that most all instances would be patched now. I know mine is.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Lemmy sends us a bunch of html in a code block. We can't remove it cause someone might actually want to put html in a code block.

I believe there is an open issue with the Lemmy devs.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

I believe that the term Microblog originated out of Tumblr. Probably wrong in that though.

Could you please report this on Codeberg. I've got a sneaking suspicion is been fixed already but better to be sure.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Does Lemmy not let you just attach them to your post?

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Oh yeah. But I click a button like that and my image is uploaded to the instance (KBin)

PS. Can't see that image as Imgur blocks my VPN.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Imgur doesn't work with vpns. To view your meme post I have to got through steps to disable either my work or private VPNs. At this point the end result is I just don't bother.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Imgur block commercial IP ranges so KBin is unable to fetch, process and cache the thumbnail.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Not strictly true. Mastodon, pixelfed, KBin all cache images.

lemmy.ml is no longer shadowbanning kbin. (lemmy.ml)

Apparently one of the lemmy.ml admins was overzealous in banning all User-Agent strings that contained the word "bot". Bans were entered for all of the individual strings containing that word which were observed in their webserver logs, which impacted kbin's reported agent of "kbinBot"....

Love this video. Had me properly chuckling at points.

VerifiablyMrWonka,

Yeah. PHP is not a speed limiting factor unless you're calculating Pi to X million digits. Almost everything about ActivityPub is limited by network IO.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

When you login initially it offers to follow all your Instagram follows. Even if they've never logged in. Its creating shadow accounts for all of them.

When they login initially they find they already have a bunch of followers.

So it's not all of Instagram. It's just all the people who've tried it + all the people they tried to follow.

Assuming boost stays as some sort of a super-upvote/share combo alongside regular up/downvote buttons, here's a UI idea on how to merge it into one unified voting system. App animation + web block mockup (kbin.social)

I heard that votes have been changed to behave closer to how people would expect, and boost is staying here as well. So I had an idea how to bring it all together in the interface....

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

I like the overal effect but it's hiding the true nature of boosting.

Boosting shares a piece of content with your followers. Favouriting does not. Kbin does not yet contain a follower feed, but it is planned. This is what that looks like on Mastodon:

VerifiablyMrWonka, (edited )
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Secondary? The boosting of a post is secondary to the... boosting?

I'd be down with the use of a reblog/retweet icon. It's ubiquitous enough that a majority of people would understand it.

EDIT. Parent was edited. I agree the upvote is the "side effect".

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

There was a sneaky edit. I believe "upvote" was added.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

I just bought an actual domain and use that 😅

As an added bonus, letsencrypt works with no effort.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Not really suspicion at this point. They are proveably 403 rejecting requests from the KBin useragent. You have the letters "kbinbot" anywhere in your useragent (case insensitive) you ain't getting content.

As a bonus they're still sending out stuff to instances though. But since KBin can't then resolve it it amounts to a DoS attack as the messages just build up in KBin retry queues.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

A number of kbin instances already have. But not .social - which is obviously the largest instance.

Aggravatingly .ml users can browse and interact with kbin magazines just fine as we let them in. It's very much a bad faith thing at this point.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

It'll never happen, centralised means stable. Just check out what this company called Google have built!

ReallyKinda, to kbinMeta

I found the neat visual customization options (color, rounded corners, etc) but the changes don’t seem to stick! Is this a me thing or kbin thing?

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

@ReallyKinda It uses cookies and so is per-browser - but they are retained for a long time. I've not seen them disappear.

VerifiablyMrWonka,
@VerifiablyMrWonka@kbin.social avatar

Fortunately, on Mastodon at least, you can set a per person ignore/hide on boosts. Very helpful if they do good posts but are generally spammy with boosts.

or a Genestealer Cult

If I remember my reading they discovered the cult on one of their colony worlds. Then they developed a cure and got on with life.

There may have been some "you will have the injection for the greater good" involved but quite frankly I'm fine with that.
