Grains of cosmic dust streaked through night skies in early May. Swept up as planet Earth plowed through the debris streams left behind by periodic Comet Halley, the annual meteor shower is known as the Eta Aquarids. This year, the Eta Aquarids peak was visually hampered by May’s bright Full Moon, though. But early morning...
Charon is 1,214 kilometers (754 miles) across. That’s about 1/10th the size of planet Earth but a whopping 1/2 the diameter of Pluto itself, and makes it the largest satellite relative to its parent body in the Solar System. Still, the moon appears as a small bump at about the 1 o’clock position on Pluto’s disk in the...
For real! Pluto was always this little blob growing up, then it had a fuzzy heart, and then to be able to see it with as much resolution as we did is amazing. It’s a curious and beautiful little dwarf
The growth of this community continues to amaze me. We’ve made this the place for the most premier Space-related-beauty on Lemmy and continue to bring in new user’s at a huge pace. Those are my favorite as well. Something about seeing the deep field images and knowing every dot is a whole other massive galaxy, full of planets and possibilities just excites my imagination.
That’s why I just bought a steam deck to supplement my PC. I can sit on the couch and play, or take it with me and play wherever I am. Plus, it’s the basically best emulator on the market. Oh and I can play any switch game I care to play on it too.
his tantalizing trio of galaxies sometimes called the Draco Group, is located in the northern constellation of Draco, the Dragon all found within this single telescopic field of view that spans a little more than the width of the full moon.
A mere 390 light-years away, Sun-like stars and future planetary systems are forming in the Rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud complex, the closest star-forming region to our fair planet. The James Webb Space Telescope’s NIRCam peered into the nearby natal chaos to capture this infrared image at an inspiring scale.
An increase in surface activity is expected because our Sun is approaching solar maximum in 2025. However, last month our Sun sprouted more sunspots than in any month during the entire previous 11-year solar cycle – and even dating back to 2002. The featured picture is a composite of images taken every day from January to June...
I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...
Just block the meme communities and it makes this place a much more engaging site. There’s obviously not the same level as reddit yet, but with time it will get there.
That’s what I do, but they were mentioning that they wanted to browse all, but the memes were ruining it for them. I’m usually on all so I can keep an eye out for new communities to join
I think this is a terribly disheartening quote. It’s very true. But it’s sad that there’s basically zero hope for us as a people to come together to do great things that benefit our species and the others trapped on this planet with us. We’re doomed to a future of selfishness and violence
I was almost sent to the gulag yesterday for having the audacity to ask my teen son to take some ground turkey out of the freezer to defrost. Worst 34 seconds of his life I’m sure.
Browsing new or Hot and seeing 15 posts in a row to /imaginarytanks, /imaginarycars, /imaginaryaviation, etc. got old the 2nd time I’ve seen it. I’ve had to resort to blocking the communities and bot that’s just spamming for content.
It’s not spam. These communities don’t just magically spring up from nothingness, there are people that have to contribute to these to get them started and to get them to grow. If you don’t like what you see, then block them, but go take a look at @Martineski profile and you’ll see they’ve done more to help this instance and multiple communities grow than just about anyone else.
Lemmy is still new, if you have a suggestion on how you would like to see things improved good, but complaining about something that you aren’t thinking about thoroughly isn’t helpful at all.
Deep in the South constellation Apus lies a truly spectacular field of nebulosity. Not far from the South Celestial Pole (at declination -80º), this nebula is very rarely captured, especially in full colour. This image shows a region catalogued by Steve Mandel and Michael Wilson in early 2000s as the 9th and last entry to their...

I don’t care about the name much, but it’s going to make searching for anything on here through a regular search engine cumbersome. Lemmy is just going to bring up results to the late motorhead singer
Yeah, I know. If Lemmy get’s big enough it’s going to be the top searches just like Reddit was. Until that time though, it’s going to be a whole lot of power stache lol.
I keep bouncing between this one and Jerboa. I like Liftoff a little more, as it’s easier to handle multiple instances and accounts, but I wish that it had mod tools so I wouldn’t have to go my communities in the browser or PC to do anything mod related.
I have played Eve Online so many hours, and it’s a bad game. Don’t do it. you will spend hundreds of hours dreaming about the cool thing you’ll do later, but for 99% of players the cool thing will never happen. You will be part of the one percent’s cool thing....
Overwatch was it for me. Loved the game for the first couple of years, then Blizzard did typical Blizzard things and it’s a disgusting pile of micro (macro) transaction shit now. I hate the battle pass format so many games are trying to incorporate now.
Same with me. Made it even worse Thay I gave my son my overwatch account when we switched to 2 and it would’ve cost me a years salary to get them all back lol
I’ve used so many over the years, but have stuck with Viral the last couple of years. It’s a very comprehensive icon set and I like the dark-ish theme.
I think that’s a bit harsh. I have Jerboa liftoff and connect installed and they are all good. Are they as good as apps that had a decade to polish up? No, but they’re pretty damn good for some new apps and they’re certainly nowhere near broken.
As Lemmy starts maturing, there starts being so many communities out there that it’s pretty hard to keep track. I’ve been browsing for about a month now, here’s a list of popular communities I’ve subscribed to that others would find interesting!...
The activity here is starting to grow and its exciting seeing the engagement and conversations increase. If you’re a lurker please post and comment so we can attract new members and build this into a bustling community.
I've been on the Fediverse for a little while now, but I'm only getting into Lemmy now. I've noticed that it is very cumbersome to follow communities from other instances. You have to click on search, select "Communities", enter the name (but without the instance), find the correct one in the list if there's multiple and then...
You can do that on browser if you know the community name and instance it’s on. For instance if you’re on lemmy.world and wanted to go to c/spaceporn on Lemmy.fmhy.ml you could just enter lemmy.world/c/[email protected] and it’ll bring you to the community through your instance.
Or if you search for !spaceporn in your instances community search tab, it’ll bring it up too.
It’s not elegant, but it makes it easier than searching through a bunch of other similar named communities.
Yeah I’m easy more active here that on Reddit, though I was very active when Reddit was younger. It just got too big and lost that feeling of taking to actual people and contributing to the overall experience.
I had a few Oneplus phones, but the 7 pro was my last of theirs. the 5 and 7 pro were phenomenal phones and the 7 pro is still one of my favorites phones ever. That being said, I didn’t like the direction they were going and the full merge with Oppo so that oneplus phones are basically stripped down version of Oppo phones, just soured me to them completely. Then you have their non-existent customer service reputation and they’ve been put on my list to avoid.
I was a huge fan of Oneplus, but will not buy any of their products again
Never understood the point of this meme. Even if the beams don’t melt, you still need to account for the material becoming weakened and mailable, which happens at a much lower temp than it’s melting point, and then it loses all structural integrity.
Give Linux Mint a try. It is very similar to Windows and will make the transition very smooth. Pretty much any windows programs that you want to run you can run in a shell like Wine.
Not sure what Adobe products you’re using, or in what application, but I do photography as a hobby and do my editing on my linux machines. Rawtherapee and DarkTable are good alternatives to lightroom, with Gimp being a very good alternative to Photoshop. Gimp is getting better all the time, but Darktable already is a stronger editor than Lightroom.
Haven’t tried any video editing alternatives (not my thing), but these programs have the added benefit of being free.
