Those who are against iOS and Apple in general, have you tried their devices lately?

I am dissapointed in my peers. For years I have always been told to stay away from Apple devices and the company in general. However, no one who said that actually used their devices, or used them but not recently (some had like iPhone 4s in the past). Their knowledge was always based on some 3rd hand impressions or internet...

Treczoks,

I oppose the Apple brand because of the typical users. They are a quite toxic group in my experience. For me, this is so bad, I would not even touch the IOS devices if they were actually good.

Treczoks,

The massive wood furniture that lasts two lifetimes is only as cheap as the IKEA counterpart if you do it all by yourself, in your own little woodshop, and only need to pay for glue, nails, hinges, and electricity. And still only of you Include felling and milling the trees on your own.

Some years ago, I wanted one wall of the living room done with a custom-made, wall filling book shelf. Estimated cost by the carpenter: 7000. I paid about 3000 for IKEA furniture and other materials and did two walls of shelves instead of just one, suspended the ceiling, ran a ton of wires and redid the whole living room electrical and communication infrastructure. Yes, all that for half the price quoted by the carpenter. Guess what? None of the furniture has broken down so far. And I don't expect it to.

Treczoks,

The IKEA shelves in the studio are about 30 years old, moved twice, and are still fine.

Treczoks,

I run several instances of mediawiki. Sometimes I curse the programmers for being jockeys (next to no usable documentation, every update breaks something), but at the end of the day it's easy and works.

Treczoks,

As I've never hatd a Twitter/X account, could someone tell me what a "DM" is in that context?

Once we can get brain-device-interfaces implanted into us in order to sort of link our brains with a computer/phone, we probably won't get that information as pictures appearing in front of our eyes.

The information would probably be delivered raw into our minds. We’d just know what time it is, what the weather will be, who’s calling us and what the news are saying, without having to process the information.

Treczoks,

Indeed not. You would get unskippable ads first.

Treczoks,

Well, in the US, FISA warrants are technically legal, too.

Treczoks,

If there is not enough space in the rest of the house and this is the only place where it fits, well, that's it then.

I would do about everything to avoid that, primarily because of the hygienic aspects but also because of the above average air humidity in a bathroom.

Treczoks,

The more rope he provides to get himself hanged, the better!

Treczoks,

Lucky for us, it is to far away.

Treczoks,

This is made by the kind of people that have no issues with endangering themselves, and whine the loudest when they get run over because of their stunts.

This is exactly the way to give bike riders a bad name.

Treczoks,

And still, every iota of my post is true.

Treczoks,

They did that years ago. I ditched the old HP OfficeJet 9xxx (don't remember the number) because it was worthless without ink - and it did leak ink somewhere, so just putting in a cartridge would not have helped for long, even for not printing.

Fani Willis says Trump, 18 co-defendants to voluntarily surrender in Georgia by Aug. 25 (thehill.com)

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis late Monday gave former President Trump and 18 co-defendants until Aug. 25 at noon to voluntarily surrender in Georgia following an indictment that unveiled multiple charges in connection to their attempts to interfere in the 2020 election.

Treczoks,

You should pay your autocorrect better ;-)

Kansas newspaper says it investigated local police chief prior to newsroom raid (www.npr.org)

The small-town Kansas newspaper raided by police officers on Friday had been looking into allegations of misconduct against the local chief just months ago, according to the paper’s publisher, raising further concerns about the law enforcement officers’ motives.

Treczoks,

This Court is unable to respond to this request as there is not a probable cause affidavit filed

A declaration of juridical bankruptcy.

Treczoks,

Wenn Du Dir die Durchsagen im ICE anhörst, weißt Du, wie hoch das Niveau für Englisch in diesem Konzern ist.

A feud is heating up between Arizona workers and the world's leading chipmaker after the company claimed the US doesn't have the skills to build its new factory (www.businessinsider.com)

TSMC says the opening of its Arizona chip factory has been delayed due to a shortage of skilled workers. The company says it needs to bring Taiwanese workers to Arizona to get construction back on track. An Arizona union says US jobs are being threatened — and is urging lawmakers to deny the workers’ visas.

Treczoks,

It is just the usual shortage of skilled exploitable workers. Nothing new.

Treczoks,

I've got an RPi with an attached USB 3 SSD, and it works like a charm. Came back without problems after power outage.

Is no NAS though, it runs MySQL and Apache2 with a mediawiki system instead.

Treczoks,

I run ubuntu server on my RPi 4 with USB3 SSD. No issues so far, but needs a good PSU. Survived a blackout without an issue.

Treczoks,

Well, the MySQL access is 99% read, so the wear and tear is not really an issue. It normally runs out of cache, anyway.

What did your setup die off? Odroid hardware? Drive hardware? Or did you get some kind of filesystem issues/corruption?

Treczoks,

No separate power, the USB3 SSD has only one USB-C connector, and draws a maximum of 250 or 300 mA under load for its nearly one TB. As the USB port is rated for 500mA, I'm quite safe.

Treczoks,

Why? I mean if I need a Linux machine, I buy an Intel or AMD machine for half the price and just install Linux. Paying Mac tax makes no sense here.

EPA Approved a Fuel Ingredient Even Though It Could Cause Cancer in Virtually Every Person Exposed Over a Lifetime (www.propublica.org)

The Environmental Protection Agency approved a component of boat fuel made from discarded plastic that the agency’s own risk formula determined was so hazardous, everyone exposed to the substance continually over a lifetime would be expected to develop cancer. Current and former EPA scientists said that threat level is unheard...

Treczoks,

Time to write or call the EPA.

Why would they care? That they just approved this stuff is sufficient proof that the right people got the "right incentive" to wave it through. Why should they anger the people who paid them?

Treczoks,

Well, we had posts, discussions, and even media in USENET back then. The only real differences I see are that fediverse is more modern and media-aware, and that people actively battle spam/bots/trolls, which in my time on usenet was not really an issue, though.

Treczoks,

Well, you don't hear it, but it does happen.

FCC slaps $300M fine on “largest illegal robocall operation” it’s ever seen (arstechnica.com)

The Federal Communications Commission today issued a record fine of $299,997,000 against a robocall operation that specialized in auto warranty scam calls, the FCC announced, calling it "the largest illegal robocall operation the agency has ever investigated."

Treczoks,

The US puts people behind bars for nearly no reason, but someone who does not pay a >1m fine and continues to do illegal stuff runs around free?

Here it would be one day of prison for the equivalent of two days income. Put those spammers behind bars where they belong.

Treczoks,

Germany, but I think similar laws exist around the EU.

Treczoks,

The problem here is that the influential people have secretaries or butlers that simply screen such calls. If representatives or senators would get bombed with unfiltered spam calls like normal people, those spammers would work in chain gangs until they drop dead.

Treczoks,

They actually changed the rate a short time ago. Before that it was a 1:1 relationship, but it sent poor people to prison for too long for simple things like being repeatedly caught without a valid ticket on a train or bus.

Treczoks,

Maybe the reason is that you behave like a first-class asshole idiot? You wanted help, but evaded the reasonable question for your instance name. Several times. While making unreasonable demands. I've seen a lot of idiots in thirty years of being on the internet, and seriously, you are one of the bigger ones.

Treczoks,

Well, if people only live of typical microwave food, they do live unhealthy. I don't think this would be news for anyone.

For anyone else who uses a microwave e.g. to heat a cup of milk, this is most likely a non-issue.

Treczoks,

Aren't there any laws in the US that threats against a government official are a crime or felony? Make the police earn their pay and send them after the culprits.

Treczoks,

I'm well aware that they won't catch all, or anyone in the short time frame. But whoever they take off the road is an improvement for society. Even if it takes months.

Treczoks,

That is a problem that should not exist in the first place. But it's America, so one has to deal with it. Maybe it will be necessary to get the professionals in, especially if the crime can be assumed to be crossing state lines in a way.

Treczoks,

While this might have severe issues with separation of state and church, those people probably are against the idea that someone might teach an unbiased, analytical approach to religion as such...

Treczoks,

That would be the only useful use.

Treczoks,

Well, then lets hope they delay whatever Marvel thingy they are planning. Watching Dune on the big screen is a must.

Treczoks,

Especially for a hurricane drawing free extra power from it...

Treczoks,

Sadly, though, it will also be free of human habitability.

With her being responsible for about half of all commits for this system, she basically is Alpine Linux. Well, or was.

Treczoks,

Zugreisender, auf die Frage, warum er im Ruhebereich telefoniert: "Weil man nur hier in Ruhe telefonieren kann".

Treczoks,

In my country, we could do tax for free, but we still invest €5 every year into a commercial program, because it has such a wonderful and helpful documentation.

Treczoks,

Treczoks,

Yep. To the supermarket twice a week, and to church on Sunday, and that's it. No commute, no mom-bus, no driving for work. Basically off the road for good, and still involved in 13% of all accidents.
