Treczoks,

Prerequisite: you == The asklemmy community

Well, you got what you asked for. As one is not allowed to ask real questions here, you get the "thought provoking questions" you wanted. No sympathy or pity from my side for wasting a good community name for a socio-psychological experiment.

Treczoks,

More like a disconnect between the moderators and reality.

Treczoks,

For example, different programs’ WebViews depend on Edge nowadays

I.e. the programmer could not care less about adherence to standards. Or, in other words: The software is buggy.

Treczoks,

Well, they are no longer allowed to milk victims in the EU thanks to good laws. That does not mean they cannot exploit those who are not protected.

Treczoks,

You have not seen a Linux in what, 20 years now?

Treczoks,

I think you might’ve misunderstood what a WebView is.

I don't think so. It's a box displaying HTML. If it depends solely on Edge being present and installed - this is a bug (of the WebView implementation). If it could be based on any browser, but the user puts Edge-specific non-standard HTML in it, it's a bug, too (this time by the HTML provider).

Treczoks,

Treczoks,

Me, donning a "Frozen" costume: "Let them go, let them go..."

Treczoks,

One additional key issue is that they would also use a lot of federal institutions that way.

Treczoks, (edited )

Eben.

Treczoks,

Ja? Wo?

Bund: "Was machen sie so?"

Treczoks,

The real answer to "Don't tread on me!" people is: "Real Americans just shoot the damn rattlers!".

Treczoks,

"worth" billions. How many people will die because of this? And how will they channel this money to the billionaires?

Treczoks,

And I'm waiting until bcachefs has sufficiently spread so I can see whether it really works or not.

Treczoks,

Why not just go to sources that don't have a real leaning? OK, they are hard to find, but they still do exist. Try the BBC for an English-speaking source, or ARD and ZDF in German.

Treczoks,

Whoever invents sich a thing simply underestimates the target groups' ability to analyzes this and in a not-so-far future will filter such things out.

Treczoks,

Depends. I do most documents in Arial and Times New Roman, as they are two of the best in legibility.

I also use DroidFonts, and some TeX-Fonts.

I just found Monaspace and I think I'll give it a try (it is a monospace font family that does not look that much "monospacy")

Treczoks,

Hat sie noch beide Ohren?

Treczoks,

In the EU, they would tar & feather the automakers for even thinking about such an idea.

Treczoks,

I have been to a Walmart in Germany back then, out of sheer curiosity. Let me tell you, it was definitely not just the price that was the problem. The whole shop screamed "We were to lazy to even think about German shoppers being different from American ones".

Treczoks,

So richtig antrainiert reflexhaft. Wohlerzogene Deutsche Presselandschaft...

Weiß jemand hier, was das bedeuten soll?

Treczoks,

I made it to Linux! What is your must-have FOSS or Free Software for linux?

Thank you so much, comrades! I am feeling pretty comfortable with linux mint, and now would like some suggestions for some absolutely necessary FOSS or free license software for the OS. So far I have the standard, Firefox, ThunderBird, LibreOffice, yada yada. Thank you again to everyone on the linux comm! sankara-salute

Treczoks,

Inkscape for drawing vector images.

Loads of command line tools to process PDF files, like extracting images or text.

All those tools for automated processing of data, including script languages like perl.

The MediaWiki engine that allows me to run a local wiki at home for my hobby.

Treczoks,

Vorsicht, die schwarzen sind nicht vegan...

Treczoks,

I would not want anything like that even close ot my LEGO collection...

Treczoks,

The Endlösung of the Palestinian question.

Treczoks,

Thank goodness homeschooling is illegal in this country. The best effect is that crazy nutjob parents are not able to install their delusions on their kids as much as they can in the US.

Treczoks,

The face of that clock is confusing. It suggest that it's about 10 hours between high and low tide which, if the tide in Digby is not fundamentally different from anywhere else in the world, is plain wrong.

As a tidal clock it would need to make a full turn every 12h50m14s. So they probably took a stock clockwork with just an hour hand, and just slowed down the balance spring or pendulum by about 3.5% to achieve this.

Treczoks,

Because the Onion's headline is the core truth behind all this.

What got you into coding ? (aside from money)

To give some context, I’m a developer myself and once I had a conversation with someone who has not “tasted” programming, but was wondering about passion and career. I was asked what I like about programming. My answer was that my interest in it came from writing small scripts when I was young to automate things....

Treczoks,

When I started with computers, the cheapest way to get software was to buy a computer magazine which published software as printed source code. Yes, you had to type page after page from that listing to get a game or utility running. On top of that, I had NO means of saving such a program - it took some time until I could afford the cable to attach a cassette recorder as a storage device.

So I got quite good at two skills early on: Typing fast - and debugging. I basically learned debugging code before I really knew how to program.

And how did I get into coding? I remember the first attempt of understanding code was to find out: "How do I get more than three lives in this game?"

And from there it went to re-creating the games I've seen on the coin-swallowing machine at the mall that I could not afford to play, but liked to watch.

Since then, I've done about everything, from industrial controlles for elevators to AI, from compilers to operating systems, text processor, database systems (before there was SQL), ERPs, and now I do embedded systems and FPGAs.

I've probably forgotten more programming languages than todays newbies can list...

Treczoks,

Even if so, I'd not argue for a non-"truck centric" approach to moving dead trees.

Me neither, but some folks here probably believe that things like that would not happen if those trees had been carried by bikes.

Treczoks,

No, they just believe the truck dropped the trunks on the bikers on purpose or something.

Treczoks,

Which invalidates one of the key arguments of the "fuck cars" crowd. They regularly come with the argument that a road without cars would need way less maintanence and therefor would be cheaper. They ignore (or don't know) that the damage done to roads by a vehicle depends on the weight and is an x^4 relationship. Guess what, if you banned all personal cars from a city while retaining access for trucks (as no city would survive without them), the road damage would not be reduced in any noticable manner.

Treczoks,

So you want that convenient supermarket around the corner getting their delivieries by bike and small vans? Good luck with that.

Treczoks,

I do have an open mind, but that also means to be able to find the flaws in plans. And your idea has so many holes, it is practically a net.

You don't need to believe me, just start to actually think it through.

Treczoks,

Oh yes, this will make the tram users happy if they have to wait for half an hour behind a delivery tram that is unloading wares for the supermarket.

Treczoks,

The first will make all bikers really happy. I've had the "pleasure" to ride my bike in a road with way to many tram rails on my way, and had to turn left at one point. That is definitely not fun.

And delivering outside busy hors means both the driver and the people in the shop have to work at insane hours. Will they be properly compensated for it?

Treczoks,

Maybe in Exploitamerica. Here workers have rights, and putting someone on a graveyard shift just to restock is too expensive for the stores.

Treczoks,

Most roads in the cities here are not even much use for cars alone...

Treczoks,

Hmm, I don't see ads on YT, but neither do I see any adblock warning. Looks like I'm striking the right balance.

Treczoks,

Technically, it would be sufficient of they lodge a bullet into the barrel. As soon as the tank fires, the bullet will wedge between the shell and the barrel, destroying - at least - the barrel.

Treczoks,

Given some of the antique tanks the Russians pulled out of the moth ball heap, it might still be an anti-tank-weapon occasionally ...
