TheGrandNagus,

They can have it once our cheques come through the door for the Viking invasions, Normandy conquest, and Roman occupation

TheGrandNagus,

Are you serious? What a dumb way to avoid the question.

Starfield is an example of Nvidia’s Linux support being extremely “sub-par”, to put it in a friendly way.

TheGrandNagus,

Pretty big news for people into Linux gaming.

Lol, calling me a moron for criticising Nvidia. Get a life.

This company doesn’t know you. They don’t care about you. Their actions have shown them to be hostile. You don’t owe them any allegiance.

TheGrandNagus,

Humans love faces.

Our brains are wired in a way that makes us want to see faces everywhere. It’s why we experience pareidolia - seeing faces where none exist. Like on treebark, moon/mars surface pics, or the people who claim to see Jesus’ face on toast.

Thumbnail creators have found that just by putting a face on a thumbnail, people are much more likely to be interested.

Look also at film and TV covers. Pretty much all of them depict faces too. People are drawn to faces.

TheGrandNagus,

Yes, power. Something that he has an immense amount of, due to his position, money, and influence.

TheGrandNagus,

Good news about page translation, Firefox is adding it, and it’s all done locally too, no phoning home to their or somebody else’s translation servers.

I wonder if there’s an extension for Chromecast support? Might be worth looking into

TheGrandNagus,

Opera was bought by a Chinese data analytics company, and once that happened, they scrapped their engine and used chromium to save money.

They have questionable CCP ties too.

TheGrandNagus,

But everyone does anytime they buy a laptop and most of the time, a prebuilt desktop.

DLSS 3 is far worse than DLSS 2 IMO.

There’s basically zero disadvantage to turning on DLSS 2. Most of the time you cannot or can barely tell the difference.

DLSS 3 introduces lots of artifacting, some frames straight up look like DALL-E image, it adds input lag, and it needs you to already have a high framerate to start with to make it bearable, text in particular gets mangled by it.

Fast paced games and games that rely on quick reactions are a no-go for DLSS 3. It’s suitable for games like MS flight sim where adding input lag doesn’t really matter and there’s not rapid movement.

TheGrandNagus,

If you think you can’t see any artifacting with DLSS 3 then you are crazy.

TheGrandNagus,

Merkel was happily making Germany reliant on Russian gas.

Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and Merkel pushed for NS2 afterwards.

Merkel is absolutely not some NATO saviour.

TheGrandNagus,

I’m sorry but appeasing Russia by building another gas pipeline after they invaded Ukraine in 2014 was an awful thing to do, and it bit them on the arse, rightfully so.

One of your senior politicians involved ended up working for Gazprom.

Before the full-scale invasion, UK, US, and Polish intelligence were saying a war was imminent. Germany (and France tbf) were calling the US/UK/Poland warmongers. Aged quite poorly didn’t it?

And at the start of the war, Germany’s response was “we’ll send 5000 helmets, which will take months to arrive”. A piss-poor level of support. Thankfully they started stepping up as the war progressed and it became clear it was popular to do so.

Add to that Germany, despite being by far the richest country in Europe, isn’t even the biggest supporter of Ukraine in Europe.

Idk why you’re painting Merkel/Germany in such a positive light here. They appeased Russia for ages, Germany only took a tougher stance on Russia well after Merkel was gone.

TheGrandNagus,

Drivers are actually something that Linux handles far better than Windows lol

TheGrandNagus,

Nobody wants to deal with Windows either. It’s just the monopoly that has been pushed onto us that we’ve been forced to get used to.

HOA banning dogs on grass - suggestions?

Hi Lemmy, My HOA sent out a email saying dogs are no longer allowed on any grass in common areas or front yards including grass between sidewalk and curb which is… everywhere except our own tiny backyards. The reasoning is some dog urine effected dead spots. Honestly I didn’t even notice them, it’s 95° here and all the...

TheGrandNagus,

Fairly certain leaving shit there is already illegal.

Glad HOAs aren’t a thing here. What dystopian bullshit.

TheGrandNagus,

Are you seriously comparing a car personally used by Hitler to a memorial built by neonazis in the 80s?

If I made a swastika statue with a plaque saying the Jews and Slavs must be exterminated, would you back me up? Because it’s the same thing. Neither are actually part of the history, they’re just contemporary fetishism of Nazis.

TheGrandNagus, (edited )

He’s really awful too, or at the very least he used to be.

He’s done a lot of rebranding himself as being a great guy as of late, and put his money towards some great causes.

But when he was in charge of Microsoft he’d openly treat people like shit, openly steal things, openly do anticompetitive and illegal business practices, deliberately put small companies out of business, and openly bribe politicians to look the other way as he built his illegally-gained business empire.

The technology landscape today is vastly more closed and monopolised because of his/MS’s actions.

TheGrandNagus,

Getting a treatable cancer and then choosing to do nothing about it other than eat fruit and refuse proper medical care is tantamount to killing yourself IMO.

TheGrandNagus, (edited )

And if you count Android and ChromeOS as android Linux, which I guess they are (though bastardised somewhat), it’s an absolute bloodbath.

TheGrandNagus,

Ooof you’re right, thanks. These nightshifts I’m working have my brain in a mess! Corrected

TheGrandNagus,

I don’t think this is 100% accurate tbh

TheGrandNagus,

I can’t wait for my cheques from Scandinavian countries for the Viking invasions, Italy for the Roman occupation, France for the Normandy conquerers, etc!

Also your caveman ancestor punched my caveman ancestor so I’m expecting a payment from you too

TheGrandNagus,

I mean if they didn’t buy the slaves to set them free, there’d have been a massive war, killing a bunch of the slaves and others, and likely costing more money. Imagine the American civil war but worldwide.

It was a necessary evil.

TheGrandNagus,

Installing drivers on Linux is faaaaaar easier than on windows. Most of the time you don’t have to do it and it’s just in the kernel by default, with the only major exception being Nvidia GPUs (in which case just open your software centre and search Nvidia then press install) and some broadcomm WiFi adapters.

I spend far more time working out how to do something on windows than I do on Linux.

Like when something goes wrong and I get an error code like “E819664167” and I’m like what the fuck is that supposed to mean??? Then you look it up online and all you find is people saying “I dunno, maybe you just need to reinstall Windows”.

Meanwhile in the extremely rare instance where something goes wrong on a Linux machine, the error message is typically very searchable or even immediately understandable, like “incorrect permissions to access [file]”

TheGrandNagus,

Yeah I’m a heavy flatpak user on both Gnome and KDE and this only happens on KDE for me. Maybe it’ll get sorted in Plasma 6.

TheGrandNagus,

So basically the entire Linux desktop then.

TheGrandNagus,

This bug only exists in KDE, based on my experience

TheGrandNagus,

Well yeah if I saw a BMW 3 series I wouldn’t use the German pronunciation for 3. Why use the American pronunciation of Z?

TheGrandNagus,

I’m not sure about the SA one, but the EU variant of that law already has this thought through.

It has allowances already for new emerging standards. If USB-D came out, there would be zero law changes required.

TheGrandNagus,

Being against equal rights for gay/bi people is considered pretty right wing these days mate

TheGrandNagus,

Touché. However the VW of today is vastly far-removed from VW during WW2.

In fact the only reason VW exists post WW2 is because of a British army captain who wanted to get the factory up and running and build some cars. He thought the design of the beetle was inexpensive, practical, and cool.

(Interesting sidenote, the designs of the Beetle were offered to British carmakers, who rejected it, stating that nobody would want a car so cheap and devoid of luxury. The Beetle went on to be the most popular car in the world.)

Continuing the analogy, VW is more like a fork of the original VW project started by the Nazi party.

TheGrandNagus,

If someone is using their money and influence to actively trample on my human rights, then yes, I reserve the right to call them out for being a cunt.

Aw diddums, but what if I hurt the homophobes wittle feelings 🥺??? I don’t give a fuck about his precious little fee fees. I care about the rights of people.

And no, calling out a bigot for being bigoted is not the issue with politics. The issue with politics is the bigoted shitheads who view themselves as deserving more rights than the “undesirables” in society.

TheGrandNagus,

Alt right is pretty undefined imo.

It was started by a right winger who didn’t want to be called far-right so he just called himself “alternative-right”. It caught on but his views were still the same right wing views.

I guess people often use it to mean the more internet-savvy, meme-posting, trolling right wing. But they too dunk on LGBT people so even then I’m not sure why anybod would think it’s not connected.
