That is pretty much how most legal regimes operate, yes. Then there are the ones that outright criminalize suicide.

Edit: as for why, it’s been shown in some studies that making access to methods difficult does reduce suicide. Cynically, maybe doing that keeps a workforce at better strength.

TQuid,

Most helium now has oxygen in it precisely to prevent this.

escMode also sold kits that had everything but inert gas, which is widely available legally.

TQuid,

The dose makes the poison. The packages sold are used in meat curing, as others have mentioned. Mix a bunch in water and drink it, and it cures your blood. Not a very nice way to go, but pretty certain.

TQuid,

Reads what the penalties could be (500,000 for companies and 50,000 for directors)

None of this shit FUCKING MATTERS ONE FUCK until the perpetrators face real consequences for FUCKING KILLING PEOPLE

TQuid,

I can’t believe commenters here are trivializing war like this. We’re better than this.

For example, we could be adding cool cartoon “boioioioing!” sound effects.

TQuid,

Hey uh I think you dripped this back there

TQuid,

I’ll wait until Lock Picking Lawyer says that any of these is something other than terrible. So far every smart lock he has evaluated has failed.

TQuid,

It’s some weird Christian comic. With explanations below every comic. I was so put off I didn’t bother trying to find this specific one.

Makes perfect sense for the bizarreness that is r/196’s trademark though.

TQuid,

Louder for the people in the back! Glad someone is holding us to account on this. Not unique to Canada at all but we should actively try to live up to the oh-so-progressive image we try to project.

TQuid,

100% other camps are still doing this. There are over 200 summer camp outfits in BC.

TQuid,

And doorknobs

TQuid,

I feel like Russia’s military is probably the worst offender as far as discrediting Russia’s military goes

TQuid,

That piece of shit landlord needs to go to prison for criminal neglect and all his properties seized.

TQuid,

It’s okay to care about multiple things. And the names and pronouns aren’t random. For example, I will be calling you “asshole” from now on. Oh, you don’t like that? You think it’s important people call you the name you prefer?

Weird.

B6 has become my go-to size notebook for journaling. Used to be a committed A5 guy but the slightly smaller B6 is just handier for most situations, while still being more generous than a “pocket” size.

For the life of me I don’t understand the weirdly proportioned “B6 Slim” and its popularity.

TQuid,

I suspected as much, and you put it very nicely; thanks!

TQuid,

Edsby apologized to any student who “feels outed”.

Fuck you, Edsby.

TQuid,

Upvoted just for “Ukrainium”

TQuid,

Interesting that it’s the kids’ shows that have been killing it on representation for years now. She-Ra, The Owl House, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, and more. And The Legend of Korra walked so they could run.

TQuid,

It is a program of genocide. Not necessarily specifically coordinated in this case, but mostly Christian nationalist groups, mostly based in the USA, have been deliberately spreading it for years.

Environmentalist :D (lemmy.ml)

I feel this is a representation of 2 sides of one coin or rather that thees two have similar objective but go about trying to reach it in their own very different ways, one is violent and the other is peaceful all tough they might not necessarily agree with one or the other’s way of reaching the end goal, they agree on the...

TQuid,

I see good trigger discipline, I upvote.

TQuid,

How are these fucking scum not in jail. Canada’s smugness about not being corrupt is such horseshit. As long as you rob people with a company instead of weapons, you’re fine.

Do you still write notes with pen and paper?

With so much note taking apps nowadays, I can’t understand why does anyone still write notes with pen and paper. You need to bring the notepad, book or that paper to retrieve that information, and most of the time you don’t have it in hand. While my phone almost always reachable and you carry when you go out. For those still...

TQuid,

This is brilliant and I am going to use it.

TQuid,

When have we ever had boosters in a timely fashion? Every shot I have had has been at least one variant behind.

International chess federation FIDE: a trans woman "has no right to participate in official FIDE events for women" (doc.fide.com)

The international chess federation known as FIDE has published new rules that state that a person whose "gender was changed from a male to a female the player has no right to participate in official FIDE events for women until further FIDE’s decision is made"....

TQuid,

FIDE have been little more than mobsters for years. I wish I could say I’m surprised.

TQuid, (edited )

“After this brutal belittling, gaslighting, and sexual harassment, you’re gonna have a lot of baggage. And the best way to carry it? The LTT backpack!”

TQuid,

Ding ding ding! We have a safe mode of robot transit: trains. See, we know exactly where they will go because they run on rails. Literally.

TQuid,

Well, you can just ram them out of the way with your firetruck. Obviously that’s not a great option either, but if the FD does that then any damages are on the robot-taxi company.

No regrets: Gender-affirming chest surgery in adults has long-term satisfaction (arstechnica.com)

People who underwent gender-affirming chest reconstruction surgeries as adults have virtually no regrets years later and overwhelmingly high levels of satisfaction with their decision to have the procedure, according to a study published Wednesday in JAMA Surgery.

TQuid,

Chest reconstruction surgery would also include breast reductions. So, trans men. That’s who don’t like breasts. On themselves, anyway.

I’m speculating but I’d assume “reconstruction” since they are keeping and sometimes re-using existing tissues. Someone gets facial reconstruction, not construction, if e.g. they get mauled in an animal attack. You are restoring things to what the patient is comfortable with. A trans person may not have been injured but what they want is for their body to be fixed.

TQuid,

Observation is one I really enjoyed. Mild puzzling, tension but not really the sort that kills you, and a fun, mind-bending story. Also the title track is just amazing.

Sam Bankman-Fried sent to jail as judge revokes bail over witness tampering, VPN use (www.theverge.com)

Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered the former billionaire remanded after prosecutors pushed to have his bail revoked, citing violations that included Bankman-Fried’s admitted usage of VPN software that he said was to watch an NFL game and the judge’s view that he had attempted to tamper with witnesses “at least twice.”

TQuid,

Hell yeah ISO 216 forever babyyyyyyy

I believe one of the overpriced Google tablets actually did use 1: √2 ratio, but they didn’t stick with it. Of course, google has the attention span of a lobotomized gerbil so they don’t stick with anything.

TQuid,

Can’t tell if sincere or what. She’s doing her job.

TQuid,

As someone who didn’t make it into law school, and didn’t keep trying partly because people who knew me well figured I’d likely have a stroke from rage as an attorney, I appreciate your wholesome and optimistic outlook you’ve carried into the career. Keep fighting the good fight!

Most emotional moments in games? (SPOILERS)

Just for the heads up, this thread will probably have a lot of spoilers. I’m gonna try to go vague on spoilers for anybody that hasn’t played Hotline Miami 2. If you’ve played the game, you’ll probably know what I mean, but I’m going to say some purposefully esoteric shit to keep it out of full spoiler territory....

TQuid,

I cried that whole bit with the controller feeling like you’re missing an arm. So exact a representation of grief.

But the last scene, where the father simply falls to his knees at his son’s grave. He’s been granted his life back at a price no human parent would ever, ever accept. I cried racking sobs. It was so awful and true.

TQuid,

Instructions unclear, am now bisexual

TQuid,

I’m actively considering getting a used Pixel and putting GrapheneOS on it, which is a highly locked-down, de-Googled Android phone. That won’t do anything to keep me away from social media and the like, but it will stop 99% of tracking, which is perhaps my biggest beef with smart phones. I want the smarts to serve me, not FAANG.

TQuid,

Ironically, because of its security features, GrapheneOS only supports Pixel phones. Very tail-eating snake territory.

TQuid,

Thank you for this. I would add, given the literal engineering for addiction, for at least some people, “just tune your notifications” is like telling an alcoholic “just don’t drink so much.”

TQuid,

Fuck Putin, piece of shit on so many levels, but especially this, attacking his most vulnerable citizens. May he soon find rest pushing up sunflowers.

TQuid,

Not meaning to detract from your point, but this view is not restricted to Japan by a long shot.

TQuid,

I just want you to know this brightened my day with a sensible chuckle.

TQuid,

Now we need one of those memes with an armored-up titan defending teensy singular “they”. The titan is labeled “Shakespeare”.

[enshittification process] They Don't Want Us And We Don't Need Them | Defector (defector.com)

The piece argues that many tech companies and media businesses have turned against their users in an attempt to extract more value. Executives like David Zaslav are criticized for their cynical approach that aims to drain the culture’s “dream reserve” for profit. This enshittification process happens when platforms abuse...

TQuid,

I want to like this article and to share it with my relatives to help explain what I am so angry about. But it is so thick with irony and deep-cut references that even I, a long-time extremely online dude, had trouble parsing all of it.

TQuid,

Greece was also praised for banning so-called ‘conversion therapy’ for minors and other ‘vulnerable persons’, as well as prohibiting non-consensual surgeries performed on intersex countries.

As a citizen of Intersexia, this is encouraging news.
