freeman,

The ARR tools are basically a search engine website you host. The interact with a few other tools you have to have access to/pay for. Namely an indexing service and a (for some) a download service. They can use torrents, so you dont HAVE to pay for downloading, but using something like newsgroups is really nice and add reliability and security.

THe “ARR’s” basically then are just a fancy UI and scheduler and just search the indexing service, download the files you want, re-assemble them and copy them to the location you want (often a file share that your media player like Plex or Jellyfin will use).

You can set them to continually look for something too. So for Sonarr, it will auto-download new episodes as soon as they appear in the index. Or if you see a commercial for something upcoming, you can add it and monitor it and as soon as it starts showing up in the indexes it will download.

freeman,

All the aarrrs. Saturates my isp bandwidth, have no issues with finding stuff, no takedown or piracy warnings…

freeman,

Only debt we have a mortgage we owe 226k on. Cars are owned outright and were paid off early. Student loans we paid off early. We generally live below our means. CC’s are used for general purchasing and paid off in full each month. They are basically a stop-gap for fraud protection.

freeman,

if the firewall can be updated regularly then sure.

Mikrotik makes perfectly acceptable switches at a reasonable price with a variety of features, vlan compat is pretty common. A MikroTik CSS610-8P-2S+in will give you 2 10 Gb sfp , 8 x 1Gbe with PoE+ and vlans for under 300 bucks.

freeman,

There definately is something. They have a ton of products. I’d have to look through my list as well. The CSS runs switchos lite, but honestly its fine. I can do CLI configs (brocade, cisco, cisco smb etc) but its whatever.

At my parents house i have been using a Mikrotik RB260GSP since about 2016 on their net. It also runs swos and im not doing anything crazy on it (in fact i never bothered with VLAN’s there though i probably should setup a guest vlan. But its been fine for years now.

freeman,

The only reason I keep Netflix is kids.

We don’t really watch it otherwise.

Even my in-laws are now pirates using hacked amazon fire sticks that are being hawked around their retirement community.

My mother in law is like “I get every streaming service and channel for 1 dollar a day, isn’t that great”.

I’m all “if it’s simple and works for you yeah, absolutely. “

freeman,

I have a mini-pc running a plex vm. And all the TVs are Rokus. So can watch anything, including live broadcast tv. And the roku is so simple kids can operate it, and do.

freeman,

If my windscreen starts to steam up mid-jourmey, the last thing I need is to take my attention off the road to change the climate settings in the UI where dials and buttons will do the job much faster without needing to take my attention off the road.

This is why ill never get rid of my 2009 Tacoma. Three knob AC controls are the pinnacle of UI engineering. One knob for fan speed, one for temp and the third for vent/airflow selection. The backlight on one of my knobs has burned out at this point, but i dont need it…Can adjust the AC without taking my eyes off the road.

When it was ubiquitous, this meant i could do this in any car. Borrowed my inlaws FORD F-150 once, had to pull over to figure out how to turn off the goddam heat. It had BOTH a touchscreen and series of dash buttons but there were so many it was hard to figure out what did each thing while driving. I also had to update their dang infotainment, it wouldnt work on some random USB device, i had to go get a USB-A 3.0 device to get it to work at all and even then it was idling in my driveway for an hour and a half. Even tried just doing it via WiFi…nope

freeman,

Yeah it’s not too bad. Just the dash kit is fairly old and held together by those plastic clip. I always break those things. It’s a juice isn’t worth the squeeze honestly. I actually upgraded my radio a while back to a wireless CarPlay/android auto and mean to ask them to swap em. But forgot.

freeman,

I have 3.

  1. Dakboard above the fridge shows calendar and shared photo album. It also runs bluetooth and serves as a relay for Homeassitant and a few kitchen devices (ie: igrill mini probe for meat).
  2. pikvm for a desktop
  3. pikvm+ kvm for lab rack esxi servers.

the latter two also run tailscale and allow me to SSH proxy if needed as a back VPN/remote access utility.

There is also a 4th. It runs NUT/UPS tools for their network gear and a mail relay for alerting and also tailscale so I can proxy if necessary.

Since its tailscale etc. Only key based auth is allowed on these boxes.

freeman,

Frankly my favorite are just generic hospital blankets.

I still use a couple i stole from the hospital (or rather paid for through insurance and seized) when my kids were born 7+ years ago. THey are awesome, and very easy to wash. Hell you can even bleach em.

What do you think of framework and their methods? (frame.work)

We are not sustainableAnd neither is any other device maker. This industry is full of “feel good” messaging, but generates 50 million metric tons of e-waste each year. We believe the best way to reduce environmental impact is to create products that last longer, meaning fewer new ones need to be made. Instead of operating on...

freeman,

When i ordered mine, they didnt have a US version. So i ordered a German model, and a keyboard (the German Model was overstock and discounted). And just swapped the keyboard.

It took about 30 minutes and probably 100 screws but it was simple.

freeman,

Any random thinkpad dock is like 200. A dell d6000 is a displaylink dock (so needs a driver) but will work for 160 bucks.

You really only need TB to extend pcie speeds to a peripheral. For most wfh stuff like spreadsheets you can do it for a LOT cheaper.

freeman, (edited )

Yeah displaylink depends on the use case. For my day to day work, scripting, spreadsheets etc. it’s fine. I can understand why some may not like them. They are great for lower end MacBooks because they can bypass the silly monitor limitations on the “slower” chips

At home I use an eGPU to drive 2 monitors and tv but that’s more to play games.

I THINK a thinkpad dock has 3 outputs. 2 DP and HDMI and is only limited by the horizontal resolution your laptop can output. A lot of intel onboard graphics are limited and if you are trying to output to a 4K+ 2x 1080p monitors you are gonna have trouble.

freeman,

Instances shut down?

Im not making a statement, im askin.

freeman,

I didn’t know exploding heads shut down.

I have noticed a decent drop in the discourse myself and thus, am simply pulling back.

Size doesn’t matter to me as much as activity. And it’s just not to active in the topics I’m interested in discussing.

freeman,

Because cognitive ability and reasoning declines with age after a certain point. Not sure what that point is but it’s definately in the 70s and 80s

freeman,

I bought it for a short time. They have a 30 day policy.

I returned it within the week. Its just way too buggy. I dont even care about the pay to play ships, whatever.

But the bugs with missions was awful. The NPC/AI fighting is nonexistant. The flight characteristics were better with n64’s star fox 64. Its just not even close to being there.

Im a sucker for space games. If i want a flight sim ill play elite. If i want a space legs discovery game, ill play starfield. If i want to get stoned and look at weird animals with small heads and cool colors, ill fire up no mans sky.

freeman,

No I purchased a game has releases going back to 2018 in 2023 and has raised over 600 million in capital.

Then returned it when basic functionality was broken.

freeman,

Interestingly the game is downloading for me. I have had it in my library for some time now.

Is it saying its been pulled for new sales only?

freeman,

Ah. That makes sense.

freeman,

I saw a graph yesterday that put them squarely between the nvidia 4000 and the latest AMD gen in terms of performance. M

Roku lays off 300 workers and removes streaming content to save money (www.engadget.com)

Roku looks to be seriously tightening its pursestrings. The company’s laying off a full ten percent of its workforce, over 300 employees, in addition to a conducting a number of other cost-cutting measures, as reported by Variety. These job cuts are just the beginning, as Roku’s also removing streaming content, consolidating...

freeman,

Yeah. Their expenses to try and add streaming was a waste. Plex did much of the same.

I bought Roku for the set top box replacement. They should continue to focus on that, though there really isnt too much more to do there either. They gotta innovate somehow i suppose and that means taking risk.

I will say they keep adding that goddam roku streaming channel to my list. I have exact an even number of lines of apps. It keeps throwing it off and its annoying.

freeman,

You download them and back them up. What happens if the disc is scratched or your buddy drops a blunt on it?

freeman,

Not to mention that as long as it’s a digital download, you don’t own the game - you lease it at a flat rate.

not true all the time. Plenty of games once you have the files are easily able to run. KSP is one such example. I can just copy the KSP folder to any computer and play the game.

Its the devs choice to require things like Steam to validate the game etc.

freeman,

I have backups of my PS4, with games downloaded from the PS store that say different.

Heck any Playstation disc games tries multiple times to get you to save it to the HDD.

freeman,

I have backups of my games on a PS4, which is air gapped (because the USB interface took a shot of lighning and no longer works).

I have been able to restore them and play games/saves on this console.

Here: playstation.com/…/ps4-back-up-and-restore-with-ex…

FTA:

PS4 console data you can back up Backing up your data regularly is a great way to ensure that important data is saved. You can back up the following types of data saved to a USB drive.

  • Games and apps
  • Saved data
  • Screenshots and video clips
  • Settings

All user data saved on your PS4 console (excluding trophies) is included in the backup data. When you restore your backup data, your PS4 console is reset, and all data saved on your console is erased. If you want to return data without restoring your console, use USB extended storage or cloud storage.

freeman,

Would agree. Especially re:Nintendo.

One of my biggest annoyance is when you have multiple switches on a family account. If you use cartridges local co-op (or whatever it is called) requires two copies of the game (a cartridge in each). If you have the downloaded versions/digital download, then any device on the Nintendo account (ie: 2 switches for kids on a family account) can play against each other locally.

I don’t think you can cache/save a cartridge to a device to be able to do their local play feature (ie via ad-hoc connections in a car)

freeman,

For me, this was because the PS4 uses USB 2.0 that caps out at 480 Mbps. It was basically doing checksums of the backup files vs the restored and it just took time, even when the backups I had it running on were a sata SSD.

freeman,

Basically every season since the farm was almost a rinse and repeat of find new place, these people are nuts, burn it all down and move on to a new villain.

I stopped watching after the whole neegan cliffhanger. I also swore off any show that ended seasons on cliffhangers.

Darryl was probably at least the most human and best acting of the few seasons I watched.

freeman,

I do similar. For laptops and docks, especially if they change setups it can be a pita (though you just need to copy files around).

Also the DE monitor config (ie that you use to login) is logically different to a users x config. So you gotta copy that over to make sure the primary monitor etc is right.

freeman,

NGL it totally depends. For general news/politics etc yeah.

Some of the more niche subreddits…Its definately much less of that and some of the folks that have been around, arent using default subs. My “home page” looks severely different from the default.

freeman,

You can buy a MacBook and have it preregistered with your apple business account. From there the first run will auto add it to jamf and apply policies.

Why are people hyped about RSS regaining relevance? (lemmy.world)

According to Google Trends, during the past few years, there has been nothing but a few minor bumps that faded away as quickly as they came. I love RSS because i do not have to scroll through dozens of different news sites all day and i would love it to return....

freeman,

I use RSS for news mostly. And Reddit for conversation. And Reddit has been phased out for lemmy.

That said, lemmy is still not populated quite enough for some of the more topic specific stuff. For example there’s gaming, but not game specific communities etc. I wish it had a bigger following.

Lately I have found the news discussions here as toxic if not more toxic than Reddit. I’ve just resolved to not discussing news unless it’s with friends over beers Reddit just doesn’t have a mobile app so f it.

College students are still struggling with basic math. Professors blame the pandemic (apnews.com)

Colleges across the country are grappling with the same problem as academic setbacks from the pandemic follow students to campus. At many universities, engineering and biology majors are struggling to grasp fractions and exponents. More students are being placed into pre-college math, starting a semester or more behind for their...

freeman,

I was told by one of my kids teachers that teaching my second grader to carry the one was wrong.

Also they were basically doing algebra in the beginnging just not using letters. Ie: 1 + __ = 9 , fill in the blank. So I taught my kids to just put x in the blank part and solve for x. Teacher said I was teaching them bad habits.

I am still flabbergasted. My kid is not a math wiz to this day, but I’m pretty sure the strategies im teaching them are the only things getting them by. I’ve taken to teaching them dice games like 10,000/Farkle and making them keep score.

freeman,

Still. That is the largest huntsman I have ever seen. And I grew up with plenty spider bros in my house

freeman,

There’s definately less destruction on the maps. The super hero thing negates classes entirely. The fact that you can’t (or could t at launch) run squads or have comms in the game was crazy.

Basically all the mechanics that reinforced any semblance of team play were removed.

freeman,

DisplayLink compresses everything over usb. If you plan to do anything color sensitive (ie photo editing) or latency sensitivite (ie: games) it’s a bad idea sine it’s all cpu compression.

That said. They are great for multi monitor general usage (ie soreadhseets and shit) or for systems with graphic card limitations on multi display output (ie low end macs on m1/m2)

freeman,

There are quality docks that work on displaylink. The dell D6000 is one example and we issue them out freely at work.

Most third party off brand docks will have higher failure rates. We see that with some anker docks that were usb-c+pd we use/had to source during the great supply chain snafu during covid. They worked in a pinch but aren’t reliable like a Lenovo or Dell dock. That’s less a displaylink thing and more a cheap dock thing.

freeman,

The mortality rates were overstated, even in The beginning. The science around the vaccines still isn’t fully complete. Actually having the virus and allowing your immune system to fight it has shown to give you better immunity response than boosters. Even when the messaging said otherwise. Even in light of that some in the community are sticking to the original hypothesis.

At this point the CDC advisory board is showing concerns that too frequent “boosting” may actually be training your immune system to ignore the disease and could have adverse affects.

Unless you have some serious Comorbidities (ie: severe hypertension, super high BMI, arrhythmias, cancer, organ transplants and on immune suppressants etc) then I don’t see much point in severely altering your life around it. If you feel bad, stay home. But otherwise treat it like the flu.

Have had it multiple times c including incredibly recently and it’s just a bad cold for most healthy folks. Just incredibly transmissible.

I don’t really understand all the dog whistling that is still going on about masks and being “bivalent protected”. Also, what China did literally locking people up in their apartments was far more authoritarian and disturbing than anything I saw of the virus in wuhan.

freeman,

I cited sources that included primary sources in their articles/citations.

It may not be what some folks want to hear. But just because “you hate it doesn’t make it hate speech.“

freeman,

Just keep reading its further down.

The immunity generated from an infection was found to be “at least as high, if not higher” than that provided by two doses of an mRNA vaccine, the authors wrote.

While Murray and Wachter agreed that vaccination remains the safest route, having a past Covid infection should at least be considered in policymaking decisions going forward, such as vaccination requirements, they said.

Its also important to note that paper was just after the “Omicron” variant, so relatively new in the timeline of what we knew.

Then you claimed “the CDC advisory board is showing concerns that too frequent “boosting” may actually be training your immune system to ignore the disease and could have adverse affects.”

These are concerns that have been voiced. Both in the EU and the US.

Marco Cavaleri, European Medicines Agency’s head of vaccines strategy, expressed similar concerns over doling out additional vaccine doses every few months—an approach he said is “reactive.”

“While use of additional boosters can be part of contingency plans, repeated vaccinations within short intervals would not represent a sustainable long-term strategy,” Cavaleri told a media briefing in January. “We should be careful in not overloading the immune system with repeated immunization.”

ema.europa.eu/…/ema-regular-press-briefing-covid-…

The point being, and maybe it was a bit more poorly structured initial, is that there isnt a giant consensus here in the medical community, by a long shot. Even if those expressing any doubt are shouted down because voicing doubt is now “misinformation”. The central point here is that repeated vaccination for an otherwise healthy individual is not a sustainable plan. COVID is here to stay, learning to live with it and structure your interactions around it isnt misinformation. I didnt say vaccines arent effective, especially for those with co-morbidities. I didnt say vaccines shouldnt be an option. I said its a personal decision and not something that should be some political dog whistle or joined to some sense of superiority over those that dont feel they need them. If you have some immunity because you have been recently infected, thats as good as a booster. Its lasts as long. That doesnt mean you are a bad person, or irresponsible or inferior to others. Same with if you wear a mask all the time.

freeman,

It took me a hot minute to figure this out.

Also even on low, with fsr up, I’m pulling a whopping 30 fps max with my 1070. My 3060 is dead and I just went ahead and upgraded ahead of the warranty check.

But I had to turn motion blur and film grain back on to make the game even marginally playable. It’s like a new record for how unoptimized it is. Seems specific to nvidia cards.

freeman,

I’m on an i7-1165g7 and 1070 on windows. 25-30 fps at 1080p.

It’s completely GPU bound. I have a 4060 ti 16 gb in the mail. We’ll see how it plays.

Fatal shooting of University of South Carolina student who tried to enter wrong home 'justifiable,' police say (www.nbcnews.com)

The homeowner who fatally shot a 20-year-old University of South Carolina student who tried to enter the wrong home on the street he lived on Saturday morning will not face charges because the incident was deemed “a justifiable homicide” under state law, Columbia police announced Wednesday....

freeman,

When I was in college I had this happen multiple times. In different apartments but they all looked similar.

Even had one dude peeing on the floor in my bathroom because I roommate was next door and didn’t lock the door. Dude was in the right apartment number, just off one building.

Even had a couple get aggressive and try to fight me.

Still, never shot anyone over it (and I was and am a gun owner. )

freeman,

This is true, and nuance is key.

But at the same time, at least in my college town, the houses on and around campus, certainly within 2 miles, were generally

  1. Quite often used as rentals for college kids, VERY few families actually lived there, in fact i never remember seeing families in them.
  2. Working class adults were more or less segregated further off campus, largely due to the riffraff.

So yes, it would be a bit different now as I do not live near a college campus. But if i did, and it was often that there were drunk college kids, the witching out after the bars let out would usually be times when ruckus was occuring. So situationally, i would be much less likely to use a gun in a case like that. I would likely have it on me while I assessed the situation but much less likely to use it.

Thats just me though. And FWIW i did live in houses off campus in my later years, and much of the same bullshit would occur. Maybe it was just a different time. I was not much of a partier, and took some hard sciences so often I was leaving the library when the drunks let out. And some of the shit they would pull…Lets just say I would never live near other college kids again.
