QHC,

Billet Labs sent them a 3090ti to test with and LMG lost it before they filmed the review. They comment on the GPU being wrong in the video. .

BL also commented on the video explaining why it would perform poorly with the 4090.

Someone at LMG agreed to send it back before they sold it at auction. Then that didn’t happen and there was no apology or attempt to make it right until the GN video came out.

They always knew it was being tested wrong.

QHC,

Worth noting that the “69… Nice” joke is not just a universal meme, but also specially part of LTT in-jokes. So it’s very much in character for Linus or others at LMG to say something like that, but I am honestly disappointed that it came from Luke.

QHC,

Sometimes things do change for the better, but usually not with the same people in the same positions.

QHC,

Linus should not have appeared in this video at all. It would have shown that adults are now in charge and that someone can actually tell him “no”.

QHC,

He said he did, at least.

QHC,

Drama is like “woke”, it means whatever you want it to mean!

This is a legitimate story about the technology industry.

QHC,

Volunteers can still be well trained.

QHC,

Excuses and spin. Nobody claimed they sold it, just that they didn’t return property that didn’t belong to them.

QHC,

That’s just straight up racism.

QHC,

Oh, but you are also decrying any reaction at all.

Saying something is not acceptable is action.

QHC,

Kansas state patrol needs to step in and take over this situation, hopefully ending with the prosecution of the police chief for abuse of power and manslaughter. If they don’t act soon, the FBI needs to investigate both organizations.

QHC,

owning a lot of guns or buying ammo in bulk isn’t really any indication of domestic violence

Good thing there isn’t a known correlation between gun ownership and higher rates of domestic homicide, right? That would totally destroy your argument. How embarrassing that would be.

QHC,

It actually does, which you would know if you even glanced at the sources I provided.

A woman is five times more likely to be murdered when her abuser has access to a gun.

QHC,

The previous comment did most of the work for you. Writers, actors, crew, and generally everyone involved in the entertainment industry does not have a salary gig like office workers. They aren’t working consistently–which has only gotten worse in the streaming era–and thus rely on royalties as part of their total compensation.

So, in summary, they are completely different situations that cannot be directly compared.

QHC,

I just genuinely don’t know if writers thought that they should be getting more. And if so, why?

What do you mean by “more”, and relative to what? The main complaint from writers are that in recent years the trend has been them all getting paid significantly less. Not just a few percentage points, more like 1-10% of what they used to get.

So, they want to get paid the same as they used to, which is more than currently but not “more” when looked at from a longer time frame.

QHC,

The company where I work did a bunch of surveys and shared the data with everyone throughout 2020 and 2021. They were completely anonymous and done in a browser in about 5 minutes. Opinion shifted back and forth over time, but the general consensus is that some kind of mix was preferred. We now have that mix and most people are still happily employed.

I still end up spending most of my in-office days on Zoom, but that’s OK. I am also part of a small team in a 200 person company and really appreciate being around other people outside my team occasionally.

Pretending there is universal agreement in either direction is silly.

QHC,

The coverup is always worse than the crime.

QHC,

Do you believe the current version of policing in America can be successfully reformed? Can the current officers be sufficiently re-trained? Who is going to patrol the streets until that happens?

When people say abolish the police, they are saying that the current system has to be entirely dismantled and replaced. You actually appear to agree with the end objective.

QHC,

Not really. “Abolish the police [as they currently exist]” is just step 1.

Sam Bankman-Fried sent to jail as judge revokes bail over witness tampering, VPN use (www.theverge.com)

Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered the former billionaire remanded after prosecutors pushed to have his bail revoked, citing violations that included Bankman-Fried’s admitted usage of VPN software that he said was to watch an NFL game and the judge’s view that he had attempted to tamper with witnesses “at least twice.”

QHC,

I see your point, but SBF is still a great example of the inequalities of the justice system quite well. Not just because of this incident, but specifically because he is getting the book thrown at him.

SBF is the 2023 version of Ken Lay–he is being made an example because he stole from other rich people.

QHC,

I wonder why the prosecution team thought that was a “mistake”, or if it was intentionally included and then retracted? Maybe it’s standard language?

QHC,

How long would Trump actually survive if he lived in North Korea? Do they have McDonalds and Diet Coke?

QHC,

Kim isn’t crazy. He was raised from birth believing he is the divine ruler of a people and received a modern education. He is acting in the best interests of the state he leads. It just happens that most of us on this platform likely live in a part of the world where those interests don’t make sense or are hard to see or just don’t seem important. But that’s an “us” problem.

His public persona in the West is a combination of propaganda from multiple angles, much like we see around Russia and China, too.

I’m not saying that he is a good leader or has the health of North Koreans in mind, but be aware that not everything you hear about living in North Korea is necessarily accurate (and not necessarily due to outside actors, either).

QHC,

Is that mandatory? Pretty sure it’s a service offered to former Presidents, but Trump could probably just say no.

He hasn’t (and probably won’t) do that because he likes feeling important, and because he ain’t paying for their services.

QHC,

Where did I say that?

QHC,

How is the hyperloop business these days?

Oh, that’s right, it was always just a distraction to keep cars relevant so Telsa made more money.

QHC,

This sounds like a nightmare future. Humans reduced to random keyword generators.

Pastor alarmed after Trump-loving congregants deride Jesus' teachings as 'weak' (www.rawstory.com)

Evangelical Christian leader Russell Moore revealed this week that many evangelical pastors have become alarmed that their Trump-loving congregants have become so militant that they are even rejecting the teachings of Jesus Christ. In an interview with NPR, Moore said that multiple pastors had told h...

QHC,

Aw, how sweet that you think a negative impact on society from religion is something that will happen in the future.

QHC,

One of the most prominent generative AI tools that has been making headlines in the last few months. Stable Diffusion is specifically meant to create fully artificial, photo-realistic images. If you’ve ever seen one of those “all of these people don’t exist” montages, it was almost certainly using images generated by this tool.

QHC,

Every comment here is just “WTF” and that is entirely appropriate. Not really sure what else to say.

I wish I had not read this headline or article.

QHC,

I knew that New York field office was going to show up the moment I saw “FBI” and “Giuliani” in the same headline.

Something is rotten in the FBI. Hopefully most of the rot is concentrated in that place and not spread throughout the whole organization.

QHC,

Anyone dumb enough to post about that kind of thing on Facebook… I don’t even have words. That would have been dumb in 2003, let alone 2023!

Also, I am enjoying the mental picture of how fast this guy’s MAGA friends reached for the FBI hotline when they saw his posts.

QHC,

That’s ridiculous. SUVs are popular for multiple reasons.

QHC,

What problem do they solve, and is that problem still solved if 50% of people are using this new method of transportation?

QHC,

Going to? They have always been here, but like the rise of TERFs or Cubans in Florida, now that a lot of the LGBTQ spectrum has gotten some progress–enough that the T part of that list is being addressed–some people are gonna play the “got mine, fuck you” game.

It’s a good reminder that even people who agree with 99% of what you do can still be assholes somewhere deep down in their cold hearts.

QHC,

Check out Whose Line Is It Anyway, both the original and the reboot. Great show!

QHC,

It’s always so eye-opening to read about a larger-than-life personality like Brady considering themselves an introvert and being bullied in school. I am glad he got to a point where he is happy and can share his story.

QHC,

Sync and Infinity just launched…

QHC,

Show us how Joe Biden was involved.

Your thoughts on The Orville? (lemmy.world)

When I first started this show I found it to be a really awkward mix of comedy and seriousness. It had some jokes thrown it at the most inopportune times as some kind of comic relief from a really serious situation. Perhaps the first half of the first season was actually a bit rough or maybe the show just grew on me, but by...

QHC,

The vibe I get is he wanted to make a Star Trek show, but since he’s that comedy guy he probably got it greenlit as a comedy and then just slowly morphed into just Star Trek while the producers weren’t looking.

This is actual reality, so you nailed it. Seth approached Paramount with a pitch for a nostalgic reboot of the TNG era, they said no, so he went to Fox who he had a great relationship with due to Family Guy and created The Orville.

Whether the producers were unaware of the slow transition to actual speculative fiction or not is unclear for the first few seasons. I think the final season shows that it was overt, however, since after changing networks the whole tone, production quality, and even the actual time length of the episodes all changed.

QHC,

Reality is often stranger than fiction. This is the kind of story that would need to be toned down to be believable if it was turned into a TV series or movie.

QHC,

Packing the court to a few dozen and having the justices rotate randomly would do a lot to prevent corruption. Nobody would know which justices are going to hear their case and there would be more justices to bribe. Do both of those together and we’re most of the way to restoring the court’s legitimacy.

QHC,

Does SponsorBlock automatically skipping vs me manually scrubbing actually make any difference to what the creator receives in compensation?

Illinois Supreme Court upholds end to cash bail; new system begins Sept. 18 (www.cbsnews.com)

In a 5-2 ruling Tuesday morning, the state’s highest court overturned a ruling by a Kankakee County judge that the law ending cash bail was unconstitutional. The end to cash bail will now go into effect across the entire state on Sept. 18, according to the Illinois Supreme Court ruling.

QHC,

Do you think that before this ruling, someone that could successfully bribe a judge wasn’t getting special treatment?

QHC,

Sounds like the police where you live kinda suck at their job.

QHC,

Sorry, but whether we like it or not, the guy is still the leading GOP candidate for President and de-facto leader of the party. What he says could influence the nation’s future. So yeah, it is newsworthy.

QHC,

Very interesting, thanks for sharing!

It’s worth noting here for context that:

  • scraping the outbound links is very different than all of the user comments, which would put more load on Reddit’s servers and also be easier to claim “belongs” to Reddit (it doesn’t but they argue otherwise)
  • this shows that OpenAI was not using, let alone abusing, Reddit’s API as claimed
