Nice start and solid choices so far!

Definitely recommend looking into Docker, it’ll make cross-platform conflicts and migrations near effortless. Repurposing unused hardware is great, but can also be inefficient or bulky, so a hardware upgrade might be in your future eventually. ;)

If you are interested in automating any media retrieval and/or organization, which I gather you might given you have Plex, look into the *arr ecosystem: Sonarr for TV, Radarr for movies, plus others for books and music and pretty much anything else you can imagine!

My setup is based on Docker and a Synology NAS as the hardware. I recently set up a Minecraft server so my nieces and nephews have somewhere to play together, but may need to move that to my PC as the NAS is not very RAM or CPU heavy.

Do you have personal experience with Nextcloud or Owncloud? I have tried the former and it’s been a general nightmare. I’m using Docker and have a dozen or more other containers that all work just fine, but even once I got Nextcloud installed and working it had all kinds of permission problems or just wouldn’t install things from its own built-in app store. Never did get any kind of document collaboration working.

This has been standard practice for anyone involved in the intelligence world for over a century, so I would sure hope so!

It’s still a huge intelligence failure, however, as infiltrating such groups is the primary focus of counter-intelligence organizations. This is also a long-standing practice, which is why all modern terrorist groups use compartmentalization to ensure nobody knows the entire plan.

I think a true unification defeats the purpose of federation. That said, I have been using Lemmy Handshake to sync my subscriptions between accounts. I generally use one account to login, but sometimes an instance has technical issues or content seems to be missing so I like having a backup option in a pinch.

Agreed. While on a rational level, I try not to be swayed by revenge, repeat criminals of violent crimes like this eventually get to a point where they are absolutely beyond redemption. Especially if they aren’t caught until they’ve already lived most of their life, so even if there could be some kind of rehabilitation, that person’s potential impact on society has already happened and was judged to be a net negative.

Beyond that, however, the biggest tragedy is not having a trial where at least some of the survivors might have gotten some form of finality. I hope they can get that out of his death and the knowledge he can no longer hurt anyone ever again.

Honest question, what structures or authorities exist outside of the city level to investigate something like this? Is it all down to what the mayor decides, or can the Kansas governor or state patrol launch an investigation? What about federal agencies like the FBI?

I could be misremembering, but from the original story it sounded like the mayor was likely tied up in the motivation for the original raid. Not surprising for a small town, really. Once you get down to a few hundred people, there’s only so many businesses and families to go around.

From the quotes in the article, they didn’t just “not disclose” so much as “lied”. Regardless of subject matter, when someone cares enough to make sure something they don’t want to be associated with isn’t involved and then they find out it actually is, they have a right to be upset.

Depends on the industry and location. If they do that a few times in relatively small industry, or in a captured but small market, word gets around and suddenly that company has difficulty hiring in the future.

The only reason cars and car drivers aren’t held to the same standard is because if a car breaks, it just stops moving. If a plane, even just a single passenger one, stops working, it falls out of the sky.

They are not regular civilians, they are public servants and act on behalf of the government. If they want to give up qualified immunity and other special protections that normal citizens don’t have, then we can revisit this definition.

Similar to how FBI or IRS agents are not the same as regular citizens but also aren’t members of any military branch.

Almost like they should be carefully evaluated and trained to make sure they can properly handle tense situations.

Police have to be ready to risk opening the door to confirm a dangerous suspect before they use force to try and save themselves.

Not if they are protected by every level of the system from any possible consequences. So much easier to just assume all citizens are a potential enemy and go in gun’s blazing. Just to be safe (for themselves).

It’s just a natural extension of the concept that entities have some kind of ownership of their creation and thus some say over how it’s used. We already do this for humans and human-based organizations, so why would a program not need to follow the same rules?

Computer manufacturers aren’t making AI software. If someone uses an HP copier to make illegal copies of a book and then distributes those pages to other people for free, the person that used the copier is breaking the law, not the company that made the copier.
