DeepSouth (www.westernsydney.edu.au)

A supercomputer capable of mimicking the human brain is set to be activated in 2024. The DeepSouth system, developed by researchers at the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems, uses spiking neural networks to efficiently emulate large networks of neurons, rivaling the rate of operations in the human brain. Or you know, they're just not from the USA.

How do I cope with my father hating me?

My father, who convinced me (16 m) at the time to move in with him instead of my mother when they moved. All 3 of the other siblings stayed with my mother. He then kicked me out the week I turned 18, a week into my senior year. Since then he stays in touch only to speak with his grandchildren (now going on 4 kids). I have never...

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Don't let him round your kids. He treated you terribly and hasn't changed, you shouldn't expose your children to someone like that. It doesn't matter if he's your dad.

I wonder if the 'proof' is going to be another 'intercepted phone call', with two obviously IDF soldiers speaking broken arabic with heavy isreali accents?
Do you think they'll call each other Sunday and Monday to keep the bit going?

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Sure, except there's estimated 50 million people worldwide currently enslaved. So outlawing this shit hasn't really done that much sadly considering there's now more people enslaved than ever.

Dogs in Space

Farscape

She-ra and the Princesses of Power

All are scifi, the top two are sillier and the bottom two are longer and get a bit serious and emotional at times.

If you haven't seen Farscape and you like scifi space opera wackiness and Jim Henson puppets, seriously give it a go. It's very comforting and fun.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Eh I'd quite confidently say Farscape is far less problematic than any other show of it's era and a great many after it.

And humans are not superior in that universe, they once believed they were and evolved into universally hated (but really hot) hyperfascists. Bringing them down was one of the biggest eventual arcs in the show and it wasn't done by Chriton being superior, he just had wormhole weapon tech in his head that he didn't want and believed nobody should have.

Chriton is one of the most basic life forms in that part of the galaxy too, he's barely more sentient than food and it's mentioned almost once an episode. He gets by by the skin of his teeth and his only real skills are maths and making friends/pissing people off.
(I do like that he also looks like a bit of a gormless idiot too, and testament to the writing and actor as he never comes across as an entitled white boy either.)

Babylon 5 has held up better than DS9 in my opinion, like both are good but B5 is just very clearly much better. The Expanse is fantastic though I agree with you fully there.

(Btw I'm not really arguing with you about anything here, I just wanted to rant about Farscape a little as I love it dearly.)

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Bingo!

(Anyone know how long till it kicks in?)

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Honestly, I find most of the small brown owls look too similar to me, while the Hawk Owl looks very unique and I like it’s badass attitude.

This is a good point. You have swayed me.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

I vote Hawk Owl. I like it's triangle brow and M shaped face, and that it looks smart enough to be as pissed off as it looks (which I know is anthropomorphising but grumpy owls are adorable).

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

This is hard! They both look like cats.

If I was going by the photos in the main post, it would be the Long Eared Owl as that smug expression is so charming.

But over all, I think the gormless innocence and sheer beauty of the Buffy Fish Owl has won me over this round. Their apricot coloured plumage is very pretty too.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

That top photo is the sort of look you give someone when they've just said something very stupid and you're trying not to laugh before they do, just in case they were being serious.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Oh wow, Pacha as Riker is surprisingly hot. I was not expecting that.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Barn owl. I like that burnt marshmallow colour pattern and how derpy their head shape is.

Sorry to the BLOwl!

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Those massive eyes!

If paired against a less famous (and derpy looking) owl, this BLowl would likely have had my vote for how unproportionally large and pretty it's eyes are. Alas.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Than good mango, not many.

Perfectly ripe and jammy persimmons are up there though.

Super ripe and juicy yellow melon is an experience too. Especially when eaten straight out of the fridge on a hot summers day.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

I find grapes far too sweet these days. I tried variety box of them a few months back and none tasted fresh and tart how I remembered them from childhood.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

That new font is so ugly.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Is that what they are? I didn't see it. They look like 'a' (without the little cap) to me.

Also it's struck me again just how hideous that underbite on the 'e' is.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

How big were the full size ones?
(Also does snyone know wtf are these even called, so I can look it up?)

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Generivore the new term for communist?

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

I slept through most of it. What I was awake for was expensive and uninspiring.

It's not a real place unless it's from the Place region of France, otherwise it's just sparkling area.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

I like the long dark, it's like 13 hours of that 3am feeling of being the only person awake, so I'm free to exist unbothered by the rest of the world. I end up far more productive and content at this time of year too, and mostly nocturnal. Living by lamp light is far too nice.

So are headscarves for non-religious women going to be banned too? What about other modest clothing?

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

I would love so much to see headscarves and hair wraps become a trend just to fuck with this law.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Like Sikh turbans and Emerati ghutra? Yeah, I wonder too.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Are bandanas a trend again? Not really professional attire tbh but gen z is full of surprises.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

If you find this entertaining, you'd enjoy Tom Holt books. This is basically his whole style.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

That paragraph above reminds me most of The Out-sorcerer's Apprentice. Where to quote from the wikipedia page
'a fairy tale universe is exploited economically'.

He's written like 40 books
and they're all pretty good fun (the fantasy stuff at least, his historical fiction wasn't my jam), not high literature or anything though, just nerdy, silly humour with some fun clever bits.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

The first 2 books, 'Doughnut', and 'When It's A Jar', I would normally recommend over 'The Out-sorcerer's Apprentice', they're more scifi slanted and imo tightly written.

The fundamental technology tying the books together is re-explained in book 3 though and you can figure stuff out without having read books 1 & 2, but it's probably not going to be quite as funny without all that pained context and layers of multidimensional headfuckery.

Aw man, Odo on the Komodo was right there.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Fuck yes. And he looks chuffed.

Imagining him riding round DS9 like this is entertaining, Quark would fucking piss himself.

OurTragicUniverse,
@OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social avatar

Wow, that's more his colour for sure.

Every so often you just have to fill yourself up with pizza till reality stops hurting. Pies can't cure you but the food coma certainly helps blunt the pain for a few hours.

I'm still heartbroken that Matchland was killed off. It was a really cool turn based match 3 strategy game that involved powering up warriors by connecting tiles for 15 to 30 seconds.
The cool bit was that you could go diagonally too and all the shapes you drew would fire off at once once the timer to draw them was up, so you could get all these huge combos on the board at once if you planned your turn right.

They even killed the cartoon network clone they released of the game too. I really miss them both, it was a really fun well designed game with cute art and music.

OurTragicUniverse,

I've never seen what you're describing. Not about Russians anyway. I've seen far too many zionists saying that shit about Palestinians tho.

I drink a lot of jasmine green tea. Nothing fancy, just Twinnings usually.
I make a pot and a mug (drink the mug while the pot steeps) most mornings, which is around a litre of liquid that hydrates and caffinates me enough to contemplate doing something productive, and leaves my mouth and body feeling clean and fresh.

I drink black coffee sometimes too but only when I need a faster pick me up. Compared to tea though, it feels jarring, leaves my mouth tasting bad and makes my sweat and urine smell awful.

Palestinian Death Toll in Gaza Tops 13,000 as Israel Repeatedly Strikes U.N. Schools Housing Refugees (www.democracynow.org)

Over the weekend, at least 82 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on Jabaliya refugee camp, including multiple United Nations schools sheltering Palestinians. At least 85 incidents of Israeli bombing have impacted 67 facilities run by the United Nations relief agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) in the last two months....

OurTragicUniverse,

Like fuck. The number one goal of this genocide is to eradicate Palestinians.
