Sounds like you may potentially have a flood sensor problem. Have you been able to take it out/verify that it’s not throwing false positives?

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

I know the struggle. We were in a similar situation ourselves with our CU and decided to pull the plug. While I love the co-op model, the rates across the board were shit (talking .05% on checking and .45% on savings), and what’s more, the rates they gave us when we were shopping for mortgage loans and car loans were even worse (variable mortgage rate at 7% in 2021, when everyone else was offering 2.5% fixed).

At the end of the day I realized that it wasn’t worth leaving money on the table just to have the warm fuzzies of being with a meh, at best, banking institution. In 2023 all I really want are competitive rates, my funds insured, and easy, secure access to my funds and mobile banking. If you can’t do that, there are dozens of other institutions that can.

Sounds like you watched a distro that included the original pilot (The Cage) as the first episode, whereas in the og season that aired, that episode never aired and was instead recut by Rodenbery later with new trial footage as The Menagerie two parter. Really creative use of discarded footage to stretch the budget and introduce background canon for Spock and the Enterprise crew.

Fathers and Sons by Turgenev: Portrait of a self-proclaimed Nihilist

Fathers and Sons by Turgenev (Richard Freeborn translation) is an interesting character study of Bazarov, a self-proclaimed nihilist in the backdrop of the ideological differences between the “fathers” and “sons”. The “fathers” and “sons” in the title refer to the two different generations of the liberals and the...

“Dragons of Eden” by Carl Sagan and “Caffeine” by Michael Polan are some of my favorites for thought provoking biological and sociological tie-ins. I also recently wrapped up “Revolutionary Suicide” by Huey P. Newton and it was eye opening in how not only prophetic he was but how the same issues are still in play some 60 years later.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

Objection, relevance.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, but this is a thread about UK trying to criminalize dissent in 2020s. What the US did hundred+ years ago is wholly irrelevant to the discussion of UK policy in modern times imo.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes it’s another example of something similar, but again, with the vastly different times, cultures, technological capabilities, and legal frameworks, I’d argue that relevance is largely nonexistent or the connection between the two attenuated to the point that any similarities are largely useless for comparison and irrelevant when discussing the issue in the current context.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

A personal attack. Nice argument. Much value.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

You’re being purposefully obtuse and you know it. When taking the totality of the circumstances between the two events into account, I still argue that the US sedition acts are wholly irrelevant to the discussion at hand re: modern UK policy and privacy violation creep.

You’re hung up on cherry picking out individual parts of my comment instead.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

It doesn’t. Re-read my last two comments, but this time actually read them instead of just getting hung up on the time factor. I used the time reference as short hand assuming basic reading comprehension initially, but then fleshed it out over the next two comments where I discuss what that time difference implies and boils down to when you look at the totality of circumstances and societal/legal norms and technology between the two eras.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh I love this idea. It’s this a private group or open to newcomers? Do you think something like that would work here on lemmy?

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

Great write up. Thanks for making the post and this follow up comment. For what it’s worth, to answer your original question, you can’t go wrong with Brothers Karamazov. It’s one of my personal favorites, and if you’re into character-driven vs plot-driven reads you’re in for a treat

“Speaker for the Dead”. Despite the authors horrendous personal views on a lot of issues, this book has a profound impact on me as a young teenager with an interest in philosophy. What really stood out to me was the way complex philosophical concepts were made easily accessible. I also liked the reckoning journey Ender went on and how it took his personal struggles in the first book to their extreme (though imo logical) conclusion.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

Love this. I just finished reading Huey Newton’s “Revolutionary Suicide” and what struck me most about it was how ahead of his time he was on issues of intersectionality and class warfare. Yes race, gender, sexual orientation…etc are all things that matter, but until we have a system that works for ALL people (which can only be gained through class solidarity and crushing the entrenched oligarchy), all of the other issues will only sow class division and play into the hands of the oppressors.

What part is propaganda? And what do you consider the other side of this specific issue?

"Why are we destroying the economy for people who will die anyway soon?" former UK prime minister Boris Johnson said to have asked at the start of the Covid pandemic (www.opendemocracy.net)

The claim, branded “horrific” by bereaved families, emerged from notebooks kept by Imran Shafi, Johnson’s private secretary for public service, during the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, an investigation that has been set up to examine the UK’s response to and impact of the pandemic....

Black Mississippi Woman Discovers the Police Who Were Asked to Help Find Her Son, Were Also Responsible for His Death (www.theroot.com)

After more than 7 months, specifically 172 days, Bettersten did not hear one update about the whereabouts of her son. NovaPrime,

No. I mean I’m all for chosing to go vegan, but this is fucking asinine. Don’t torture and malnourish your pets.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

For cats especially, yes. And no, I’m not going to do that. It’s on you to prove that they can, and so far all evidence (other than this guy who is shilling his own food, surprise, and using unreliable self-selecting and self-reporting data) says otherwise.

NovaPrime,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

Outside of the nutrients argument which you’re hyper focused on (and which I don’t agree that you have compeling evidence, especially when it comes to cats), I firmly believe that the choice to go vegetarian/vegan is a personal one. Pets and small children cannot make that decision for themselves, so I firmly disagree with forcing it on them (outside of extreme cases like animal protein allergies, unavailability of meat…etc).

price discrimination

So we took a family vacation recently and we had to drive halfway across America and what creeped me the fuck out was how we were getting such different prices on different phones while looking at the same hotel room on Priceline. For example I would look for a hotel in Chicago and find a room for a $180, then my cousin is also...

Even better, an automatic presumptuon of guilt with weapon discharges and camera “malfunctions” with the onus on the officer to raise an affirmative defense successfully. Is it going to be burdensome for the police? Yes. But that’s the fucking point. Weapon discharges should be a true life or death last resort only

I’m not afraid to say I was wrong

I am old enough to have witnessed the golden age of The Simpsons as it was happening, and I know that, even then, people thought it was past its prime. I was among the many who tut-tutted that it was trash beginning in the early 2000s, but… I was getting over being sick a week or so ago, and I gave myself an experiment that...
