It’s things like this that make me glad that my email service defaults to not loading any images/links/html. There’s a small button at the top to load them if I want.
Yeah, I really liked the movie and it’s hard to describe exactly why.
It’s not an amazing story, or amazing characters, it’s not exciting…but it has a certain vibe/mood to it that I liked.
I was also a bit fascinated by Japan, so that’s part of it. Got to visit a couple of times in the years after seeing the movie and whenever I’ve been in a Tokyo hotel room it’s reminded me of the film!
I watched Amsterdam, a 2022 comedy/mystery set in the 1930s, starring Margot Robbie and Christian Bale and a big cast of others including Mike Myers, Rami Malek, Robert De Niro and Chris Rock.
It is loosely based on The Business Plot, an actual political conspiracy in the US in the 1930s. I’d never heard of this before.
It was an interesting and ‘different than the usual’ type of movie. A lot of the focus was on the witty dialogue between characters. Pretty nice movie visually too. Overall I enjoyed it and would give it about 7/10.
i started using the internet in the late 2000’s and still remember when you search for something most of the times it would return with a forum post … now its just random websites … if you ever need real and concise answer you have to add site:reddit.com at every search and since discord or twitter are not crawlable by...
Yes, they are less prevalent due to Reddit and other social media sucking up a lot of the users.
They are still around though. One Australian forum that I’ve been on for years which is still very active is Whirlpool. Started as a tech forum and expanded. It’s very useful as source of info as it’s been around over 20 years and a lot of questions have been asked and answered there.
Hi all - the last Apple product I purchased was the gen2 iPod. I have a decade old iPad that I inherited from work and never really used - right now it’s an always-on authenticator app screen at my desk. I have used MacBooks of all flavors for work for the last 12 yrs and have inherited both Air and Pro for personal use. My...
Maybe it’s just because there’s less content on Lemmy as of right now, but I remember doomscrolling Reddit, but now I only briefly open Lemmy once or twice a day....
I didn’t really like the community in Reddit that much. I used it more like a news feed. So I never read ‘all’, I just read my subs for a few minutes here and there, but I didn’t post and comment much.
Since coming here I post and comment a lot more. There seems to be more proper discussion here, despite being much smaller and quieter.
I just got my home server up and running and was wondering what you guys recommend for backups. I figure it will probably be worth having backups on cloud servers tjay are external, are there any good services yall use for that?
I have been with idrive since 2009. At the time they were the only ones that allowed backups of network attached storage on their cheaper personal plans. Everyone else saw that as an “enterprise” feature which required a business plan. Which was bullsh*t, because lots of home NAS devices were being sold.
Anyway, I haven’t done a recent comparison of services, but I remain happy with idrive.
Thesedays I no longer backup on a computer with a mapped drive, but directly from my NAS which runs the idrive software.
I had a catastrophic dual drive failure a few years ago, one failed and another failed during the raid rebuild! I was able to restore about 1tb of data and didn’t lose anything important.
They also offer backup and restore by shipping a drive to you if you want to avoid the huge initial backup or a total restore, but I haven’t used that feature.
They do also have a mobile app, but last time I tried it, it wasn’t great.
I know you can play the game at chrome://dino, but it doesn’t evoke the same nostalgic feeling of a 10yr old me turning on aeroplane mode and spamming space bar to try and beat my brother’s high score. Good memories.
On desktop it’s mainly Firefox, on mobile it’s mainly the stock Samsung browser.
But I’ve started using Edge a bit more on mobile lately since I discovered its reading mode, which makes for a very clean readable format to read articles.
Earlier today, Samsung announced that three new apps are coming to its Wear OS-based smartwatches. One of those apps, Thermo Check, is coming to the Galaxy Watch 6 and the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic first and then to the Galaxy Watch 5 series.
Yeah, I’m only keeping it because of the grandfathered deal. If they scrap that I’ll just cancel and save the money. Better in my pocket than Google’s!
I’ve been a fan of Memmy for the most part, but post Apollo i’ve still been out of sorts with any platform. I really miss marking-read once you scroll past posts on my phone....
I just switched to Authenticator Pro from Authy and I’ve been very pleased. It took some time to get my codes transferred over, but now I have android wear support, night mode, and my codes aren’t held hostage by Twilio!
Using Authy. Pretty happy with it. It’s key feature for me has been the ability to easily restore if you lose, reset or upgrade your device, without having to mess around with your own backup and syncing.
Would suck to reset your phone and discover the sync had failed and the backup was not up to date.
Every few months I keep re-trying SwiftKey and the Samsung Keyboard, but I keep going back to GBoard because when I swipe it gets it right a lot more of the time than the other two.
I sometimes get a bunch of Dutch and German posts. They seem to come in waves. My high school German from years ago is not up to the task so I’d rather filter them out!
I’ll start. Did you know you can run a headless version of JD2 on a raspberry pi? It’s not the greatest thing in the world, but sometimes its nice to throw a bunch of links in there and go to sleep.
OK, so I’ve known a number of Scottish people and I’ve been there a couple of times and generally had no issue understanding them.
However, when working in London years ago, I had to talk to someone based in Scotland on the phone and her accent was just insane.
Honestly it was exactly like this post, she’d say something, I’d say sorry what and this repeated 3 times then…we both burst out laughing. The most insane Scottish accent ever!
I’ve never had a Facebook or Instagram account in my life. But I do use WhatsApp because it’s the main way most friends and family communicate (Australia).
I would not be happy if I found out I suddenly had a Threads account that my friends could follow without me even signing up, just because I use WhatsApp!
Yes, but in this instance, they are allowing people to pre-follow that shadow account and then apparently you get a notification to say they have followed you promoting you to join and follow them back.
That’s a very cunning way to boost their new service quickly!
I’m relieved they’re not doing that with WhatsApp.
I think it would then delete any account in both Instagram and Threads.
But there’s no need to do that. If you already have Instagram and your happy with it, there’s nothing extra you need to worry about just because there’s a shadow account pre set up for you in Threads.
It’s a shady way for them to push their new service, but it’s not like they suddenly have any more info on you than they already had.
It’s not a full replacement of Photoshop, but Photo Studio Pro is the best one I’ve found. It has a pretty good background replacement function that blends two photos.
Found this post super informative as it relates to Mastodon, and thought Lemmy might also benefit from this perspective. I’m not sure I share his optimism, but his points seem sound to dampen some of the alarm bells over Meta joining the Fediverse.
Yeah I’ve been taking a similar approach, to social media. I’ve avoided the algorithm.
I mean, I don’t really do social media in the usual sense, never had Facebook, nor Instagram. I did have a Twitter account but I used it to follow certain accounts and didn’t tweet, so it was basically an RSS feed. I used a 3rd party app and only saw my subs, no ads, no suggested/promoted posts.
Same for Reddit, used a 3rd party app, no ads, no suggested/promoted posts, I only ever read a feed of my subs.
My Reddit and Twitter subs/follows have been mostly hobbies, niche areas of interest, products I own, sports etc. no politics or news discussions. So I’ve really avoided being exposed to most of that toxicity I keep reading about.
This is why losing 3rd party apps was a big deal for me. I don’t want to read sponsored/promoted/suggested posts or ads. I’d rather not use the service at all if I have to.
That’s why I’ve fully moved to Lemmy and Mastodon.

I’m not sure. But maybe it makes sense to sign up to more than one instance.
My main account is on lemmy.world, but now I’ve signed up to another one on aussie.zone. I can see all the content from there and it’s nice and fast unlike world at the moment.
It feels kind of like I’m experiencing a benefit of federation, when I can simply switch accounts and keep browsing when things slow down on one instance.
