I was surprised to learn Portugal was so poor. I’d be curious to know the history there. They were a powerhouse during the colonial era, so it’s interesting that they didn’t end up wealthy like most other colonial powers.
Rep. Matt Gaetz is planning to attempt to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy from the role this week after the House leader worked with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown on Saturday.
Yes but I think it’s in the house rules currently. I could be mistaken on how that works.
But even if it happened by mistake, allowing a democratic speaker would be unthinkable for any republicans, even moderates of which there are very few.
In the hills of a dry, remote patch of California farm country, Lee Harrington carefully monitors the drips moistening his pistachio trees to ensure they’re not wasting any of the groundwater at the heart of a vicious fight....
It’s complicated but I would say no. Pretty much all crops require some amount of water so it’s more a question of how it’s allocated. Pistachios are popular to grow because they are high value. So it depends on how you measure. If the goal is maximizing revenue based on limited water supply, pistachios could be a good choice.
I see the human organism as a layering of different levels of consciousness. Each layer supports mostly automated processes that sustain the layers beneath it....
A cell doesn’t have evidence of anything and is incapable of pondering such a thing. So the very idea of a cell having evidence is absurd.
The idea of a person having evidence is not absurd. And I would argue that there is evidence that there is not a higher consciousness in our bodies. There is no bodily system that behaves in a conscious way other than the brain.
Well no I can’t disprove it because it’s not falsifiable. But there’s no evidence for it so in my opinion it’s not worthy of much consideration beyond a half-hearted musing.
I haven’t considered those things but again I would want to see evidence for them before taking them seriously. The first step would be proving that alternate universes exist. I’m not a physicist but I know this has been theorized. Is there any evidence for it yet? Then you would need to demonstrate that communication between these universes is happening in our brains somehow. At that point you might start to wonder about such things.
Lower oil prices in the US mean more damage to the biosphere, the world, and ultimately the US and even Venezuela. This view is as myopic as the one it seeks to criticize.
The real solution is to phase out oil production and use as rapidly as practicable. Doing this will solve many huge problems, but also have the added benefit of rendering this entire conflict moot.
I think a lot of their power is that people don’t think change is possible, or are too distracted with day to day concerns. But I think it can happen if people demand it forcefully enough.
Since my favorite reddit app came to Lemmy I’m really keen on getting more people into the fediverse to pump up the volume of content around here. Are there any initiatives that we can assist to get folks onboard?...
I actually think Lemmy needs more work before it grows much bigger. The mod tools are really lackluster currently. And that was a big reason people wanted to leave Reddit.
I’m starting to think climate change is going to necessitate a total rebuild of all water-related infrastructure, as well as anything that can be affected by excessive precipitation. Do basements even make sense in this new world?
Sure but I’m saying harnessing then as a fishery is the best way to control or reverse this problem.
Unfortunately, a 90% decline is not that unusual compared to many other ecosystems. While the effects in aggregate will be huge, the effects of one species will not be that notable relative to the rest of our environmental catastrophe.
I’ve never had Mediterranean crabs but this is a bit surprising if true. Of the various North American crab species, this one has the best flavor I think.
It’s possible they taste different since they have a different diet but I definitely would not describe ours that way. Very meaty and with no metallic taste that I’ve noticed.
I’d love to visit the Mediterranean someday but probably not soon. Right now I’m trying to minimize the amount of oil I burn so until there’s another way it might not be feasible.
Well the article says it’s the Atlantic blue crab which is the one I’m talking about. There is only one type under that name to my knowledge. If they do taste different it must be down to the different diet or environment. That or our palettes are somehow different.
Well if it is the same or similar to what we call the European green crab here, that would be quite interesting! That species has invaded North America but is widely seen as unsuitable for eating here, while the blue crab is highly over-harvested for its delectable flavor. I suppose there is no accounting for taste but the rest of the world has a great appreciation for these so I think Italy can come around to it.
Not even remotely accurate. It would cause notable changes and likely widespread famine but not anything as instantly apocalyptic as the film. Temperatures wouldn’t change dramatically aside from Northern Europe. The gulf stream’s effect on temperatures is smaller than people think.
The bigger change globally speaking would be shifting precipitation patterns. This could lead to dramatic aridification of parts of Africa and India, and large increase in precipitation in North America. But it’s not going to trigger some kind of hemispheric ice age as depicted in the film.

Wow um zero? I don’t really take baths at all. Shower maybe a few times a week but no real schedule, just when I feel dirty. That could be once a week or it could be 3x in one day. Just depends how dirty I get.
How much of a reduction has this caused? Is it even measurable? I’m talking about a much more systematic change. A dramatic departure from cars as the primary mode of transit and electrification of any remaining transport is what’s needed. As well as a phasing out of oil in the chemical industry.
Unfortunately, the Caribbean is a large and very diverse region which is underrepresented among the community here and probably in training data for plant apps as well.
If you can come back when it flowers or fruits that would make it easier. Or sharing a more specific location.
Erythroxylon rotundifolium, urbanii, carthagenense, havanense, and especially brevipes all look superficially similar but I’m not familiar with this genus. They all have glaucous leaf undersides so consider adding a photo of that feature to help verify.
If you are really committed to IDing the plant, you may need someone with local expertise.

Dems would still maintain their majority. To me it is worth it to take out the trash. But if you want to get realpolitik then I think it’s still worthwhile to not tolerate a prominent corrupt politician in your ranks. That could have electoral consequences for the party as a whole.
I do loose leaf yeah but I don’t see why you couldn’t cut open teabags. And my tea consumption is a lot less than yours. But give it a try. If the pot fills up you’ll just have to go to plan B. I don’t pay that much attention to the decomposition rate but it’s probably fairly slow.
