Extrasvhx9he,

Haven’t read it but I hear Eragon was absolutely shat on. Without reading it, the movie was pretty ehh for me, great acting but weird plot

Extrasvhx9he, (edited )

Yeah I’ll look through them and sort out which are recordings and look online. The majority are just movies without their cases though so I wont hold any hopes. Anyways even if I do miss one, it’s looking more and more likely I’ll just leave them at a thrift store (if they accept them)

Extrasvhx9he,

I want to say leave a modern computer or some other piece of technology at some point in time (maybe 50’s) but I’m not sure if it could be reversed engineered

Extrasvhx9he, (edited )

Woah thousands? I guess maybe see if you can get your hands on a large flatbed file scanner (hit up some thrift stores) and just scan a couple at a time and crop later

Extrasvhx9he,

I don’t abbreviate as much when talking afaik

Extrasvhx9he,

Honestly a big debate, so it really depends on your threat model. Lots of people even keep their totp seeds within their password manager which basically defeats 2fa imo, but it’s highly convenient. Personally I keep my totp seeds seperated in a sandboxed user profile.

Should I rethink the encryption method of my backup drives?

I’ve been using veracrypt for the past 4 years to create container files in everything from thumb drives to external hard drives. After upgrading one of my backup drives, I decided that I will switch to a different filesystem altogether going on, from ntfs to ext4, since I havent really used windows in those 4 years. With the...

Oh by disaster plan I mean incase of drive failure/my death. Its the 3,2,1 backup rule basically. 1 original backup drive and a copy of it are local in a fire resistant box within a bolted down safe, then an offsite cold copy of my backup drive is at a loved one’s home where backups are manually updated monthly. The more important data is also stored in the cloud with cryptomator just as more insurance for myself. A laminated paper with credentials needed to access the data is stored in 2 places, another loved one’s home in their safe (cloud provider account credentials opted out) with instruction in case I die, and hidden local in case I forget anything.

Extrasvhx9he,

Yeah the drives of each of my machines are fully encrypted

Extrasvhx9he,

God I really should, I just dont want to sound creepy.

Extrasvhx9he,

Not me but an old friend of mine had a red eared slider. It looked god awful to take care of it. He had like a giant plastic tank, think its called a stock tank or something, which took like at least 1/4 of their room space. Then there was another big box filled with sand and dirt that he said was for eggs since apparently they just lay them whenever. He probably slept great though since all you heard was the filter whenever you walked in. Not sure how long it took to clean the giant tank but I can only imagine it must of taken hours.

Extrasvhx9he,

Yeah absolutely they can if you’re using poor online security. The most common would be through reused passwords since websites have breaches all the time. This can easily be mitigated with the help of a password manager and 2fa (stick with totp, passkeys and hardware security keys). The second most likely method would be through phishing schemes, where a realistic looking message from a website/app is sent to you and you input your account credentials. AI is also making this much more difficult since realistic sounding voices of loved ones can be used to trick you into sending over your account credentials but that would be more of a targetted attack. You really just need to be aware of what you’re doing, not click on links unless you were expecting them, and double check identifying information from the sender to protect yourself from this. The last method is really a targetted attack and thats social engineering. This is where a scammer calls in to support pretending to be you, with personal information most likely from online breaches, in hopes of gaining your account credentials. You would just really need to rely on your 2fa and the training of support reps to protect you from this. Mostly common with phone carriers so make sure 2fa is enabled there.

What would cause a hard drive's, in an enclosure, filesystem to not mount in PopOs?

Originally posted in the linux community but wanted to expand my results a bit. Hopefully this isnt considered tech support since the problem is already solved and I just want information. (Copy & pasted) Still new to linux hope its ok to ask here. I decided to replace one of my backup drives for the first time in 5ish years...

Extrasvhx9he,

Yeah started getting some hardware issues relating to the drive, some audible noises and whatnot. I blame the lack of packaging the seller used, but if I run into some trouble I’ll use the commands you gave me. Thank you for your help

What would cause a hard drive's, in an enclosure, filesystem to not mount in PopOs?

Still new to linux hope its ok to ask here. I decided to replace one of my backup drives for the first time in 5ish years with a new 2.5" HDD meant for internal use but in an enclosure (the enclosure works fine). I formatted it in ntfs via gparted and everything went as expected, I even created a large veracrypt container file....

Extrasvhx9he,

Mostly just for cross compatibility between my devices and I really like veracrypt

Extrasvhx9he,

Yeah its for compatibility between my devices, appreciate the help

Extrasvhx9he,

I always eject/safely remove my drives but I will check the syslog thank you so much for pointing that out

Extrasvhx9he,

Now what if you mixed a small amount of body grown blood with lab grown

Extrasvhx9he,

Not paid but shattered pixel dungeon. Could always donate to the developers though

Extrasvhx9he,

I usually remind myself “the faster I get this done, the more time I have for myself”

Game Recommendation Request: passive/turn based, portrait orientation, no IAP

I’m looking for some game recommendations. I feel like a ton of these games exist but they’re riddled with IAP. I don’t mind paying a little to buy the game. I have the play pass but so many of these games are active involvement and landscape orientation. I like to have an extra hand free and landscape requires both hands...

What is something worth buying as a teen? please explain.

sense most online business are having black friday is it worth buying something or should i pass and try to save my money. im a teen i have around 200$ but i would like to limit myself to 100$ or less. im probably posting this in the wrong place but im not sure, i just want to make a smart choice when it comes to money....

Extrasvhx9he,

Personally when I was younger, I lost many account credentials and important files when my laptop got stolen at school so an external hard drive is worth it or even a subscription to a cloud based storage provider if you prefer that.

Edit: personally I’d go with an external drive (40ish usd for a tb)

Extrasvhx9he,

Could also get a fatip for around 20 - 35ish USD depending on comb type. Chrome/nickle plated machined brass will last for years

Extrasvhx9he,

Same only suffers with gpu support on my t430. Have to use nouveau to get some kind of external signal from the displayport

Extrasvhx9he,

Atm a burner dropbox account with cryptomator on top. Going to see how mega works with cryptomator and hopefully that will be my replacement

Curious why M-disc specifically? Isn’t that storage media kind of expensive for the amount of storage space you get? Plus unless every disc is getting buried in a capsule, you would still have to baby it like any other optical disc even though its more durable.

Extrasvhx9he, (edited )

Iirc theyre these expensive discs that are highly resistant to disc rot (or something along those lines) for at least 1000 years. Kinda gimmicky tbh since it still needs to be stored properly to achieve that claim and suffers from the same problems as any other optical disc (the equipment needed to read and write and still durability)

Extrasvhx9he,

For desktop: Mullvad browser default settings no customization, always on vpn (mullvad), alias emails (Simplelogin is great and somewhat user friendly).

For Mobile depends on device but lets say not a google pixel but an android: seperate necessary intrusive apps via a work profile using shelter), use pwas as much as possible via a privacy friendly browser (I like mull + ublock extension), an always on vpn (tip: mullvad has the option to block trackers also), again alias emails, disable as much bloatware via adb, and lastly switch to foss alternatives for apps where you can.

Besides that dont fall into your normal patterns/interests switch it up between each identity. Hope that helps

Extrasvhx9he,

Using grapheneos, it was a good gateway to other privacy & security enhancing habits

Extrasvhx9he,

Havent read the article yet but If you have to manually input just stick to 6 or more randomly generated words (different languages if you would like to). A keyboard won’t always have options for emojis. Your password manager’s autofill/autotype everywhere else and 2fa where you can thats it dont overcomplicate things thats a good way to screw yourself over

What to do with an original switch dock

Hi again, I went thrifting and found a working, original switch dock for 3$ including the charging cable and assuming I could just plug in my other devices via the usb c input, I brought it. Turns out it doesnt work with other usb c devices for reasons and I dont own a switch personally so I’m kinda stuck with this cool paper...

Extrasvhx9he,

Oh sorry I already donated it

Extrasvhx9he,

I too dabble in alestorm and rumahoy

Edit: should checkout wind rose if you want to try some dwarven metal

Extrasvhx9he,

You peaked my interest please go on

Extrasvhx9he,

Hell yeah will check them out thank you

Extrasvhx9he,

Ah, my bad. Thanks for the correction

Whats the best budget friendly way to transfer vhs tapes

Hiya, pretty much the title. I have a dozen tapes I want to backup before age takes its toll. My basic idea after watching some videos online is to buy a hardware based upscaler that can interface with my vcr then throw that signal to a video capture card and record on my computer. I’ll go with name brands to avoid problems...

Extrasvhx9he,

Yeah you’re right I should opt for just getting the “original” footage first. The original plan was to use the hardware upscaler as a means of getting a usuable hdmi signal since the capture cards that I was looking at in my budget only had a singular hdmi input. I’ll see what option ebay has. Thank you really appreciate it

Extrasvhx9he,

Both but prefer mechanical and wooden for backups

Extrasvhx9he,

Hope you’ll make a killing in sales

Extrasvhx9he,

Same, all you really need. Maybe also password manager extensions for the added phishing protection

Extrasvhx9he,

I’m one of those monsters that eats the oreo and then washes down with milk. No dipping

How to de google or create a more private experience with pixel 8

So recently bought the Pixel 8 with my previous carrier being Verizon and was going to put Grapheneos on it but I had no idea that Verizon locks the boot loaders of their devices even though google does not. What are some things I can do to de google the device or make it more private like Grapheneos would. Or am I out of luck....

Extrasvhx9he,

Afaik out of luck so sell it and save for a non carrier pixel

Extrasvhx9he, (edited )

Not sure how niche you want but I watch Restore and Replay: Video Game Preservation. I like hearing him talk and learned how to save some old dvds I had around

Edit: also Dean Doherty if you like to watch people fix power tools

Extrasvhx9he, (edited )

A 2.5" hard drive enclosure for 15$. 2.5" hdds are pretty cheap nowadays with pretty sizable capacity, got a 1tb toshiba for 30$, making them perfect for backups. Toshiba and western digital are the brands to look for. 2nd best purchase would be my digital license for cryptomator on android, encrypted cloud backups for most of the providers.
