What are the differences between linux distributions?

Hey guys! Trying to understand what developers actually do to create a yet another distro, or what are the differences between existing distros. Lets say we have ubuntu and fedora. What are the differences? Excluding DE, Installer, theme, installed packages/libs and package manager. They both are FHS compliant, both running...

Dotdev,

I wouldn’t compare void and nix since both of them follow very different approaches. Void is more like a traditional distro while nixos on the other hand uses configurations for setup.

And no you can’t use void on nix os as said above. Hannah Montana linux and kubuntu uses Ubuntu as the base that’s what he meant.

Dotdev,

If the same void package exists in the nix os repo then sure. You can’t use a void package in nix os is the thing I would like to point out other than using distrobox.

Dotdev,

It’s fine for the most part. Just keyboard shortcuts won’t work in default and theming is slightly difficult. You have add extensions to gnome to increase functionality.

Dotdev,

Blend is based of arch not Debian.

Dotdev,

Went with Arch and Fedora simply for the parallel downloading. I tried xbps , the only turn off for me was the fact that feature was missing otherwise void is best to stick with.

Dotdev,

I said for xbps does not have parallel download support.

How can I fix these darned icons in Zorin Lite Xfce??? (imgur.com)

These darn icons are pissing me off and there’s not a whole lot i can find in the settings. So on the right sys tray, the bluetooth and network icons are perfect; that’s how I want ever icon to be; perfectly sized, it’s clear and detailed, it looks proper; same with the date and clock. The notification, wifi, and battery...

Dotdev,

In panel settings , switch off the automatic size for icons that would fix it for you.

What is the best linux alternative to OneNote?

I’ve no problem with using LibreOffice for most of my document needs, but i haven’t found a good substitute for microsoft’s OneNote yet. I mainly use it to plan my RPG games and it helps a lot. What alternatives are there for organizing notes on linux, with similar features to those that OneNote provides?

Dotdev,

Some which I can think out of my head are : Joplin Trillium Logseq Notion Obsidian Anytype

If you need to draw, I would look into notion and obsidian.

Dotdev,

Well you can use the web version.

Dotdev,

Void linux with its xbps package manager might match with your requirements.

Then solus with its eopkg package manager which I might wait like next year to try it.

Dotdev,

Icon theme : Papirus Theme: Catppuccin Macchiato Cursor: Catppuccin Dark

As you can see I enjoy the catppuccin colorscheme for its variety.

Dotdev,

Well there is clipgrab if you want a GUI downloader.

Dotdev,

Mods please remove this.

Dotdev,

There is a youtube channel LinuxScoop he shows many customisations try them if you like it.

Dotdev,

git not installed in ubuntu based distro was the shock for me.

Dotdev,

Debian does ship nano not vim.

Dotdev,

Opensource is a more used term compared to foss. So popularity wise it was chosen is my guess.

Dotdev,

In the GitHub it is written that you should only use fusuma.

About that error, in windows, you have two users say administrator and user. Both the users have their own user folder, they can’t tamper with the others users folders right.

Similarly linux in default install has two users one the root and other the user. When you use sudo you are asking the root to open the file in its folder not in yours.

Dotdev,

If I am correct mate doesn’t have many touch gestures so there is no effect for it. If you want gestures gnome or kde would be suited. I maybe wrong if so any seniors do correct me 😉

Dotdev,

Well don’t know much about gnome since the first gnome I used was gnome 3.I never tried mate.

android launcher like Trebuchet but starting search right on emtering app drawer

I would like for app search to start right as I enter the app drawer and I want the app to start as enough chars are typed to match the app without additional clicks. I’m aware of 0launcher, kiss, and other launchers doing this (I believe I tried all the launchers available on f-droid) but I want to stay with trebuchet style...

Dotdev,

Kvaesitso has a setting to enable start right after opening the drawer if that’s what you want though it’s not as minimal like olauncher. www.f-droid.org/…/de.mm20.launcher2.release/

Dotdev,

Roblox is working on it there is unofficial way using grapejuice coming soon.

Dotdev,

Like when ? Due to roblox adding the new anticheat it blocks wine like others.

Dotdev,

Wait it’s already up ?

Dotdev,

Oh nice to know.

Dotdev,

Flatpak and snap don’t use system theme unless you tell it.

Dotdev,

If you are using defaults in gnome it’s fine, but custom themes don’t work.

Tips on running multiple distros together on my laptop?

Hello all, sorry for such a newbish question, as I should probably know how to properly partition a hard drive, but I really don’t know where to start. So what I’m looking to do is install a Debian distro, RHEL, and Arch. Want to go with Mint LMDE, Manjaro, and Fedora. I do not need very much storage, so I don’t think...

Dotdev,

Have you tried distrobox ? That would sound more reasonable.

Dotdev,

Bedrock linux is not a vm. It is a meta distro means it runs on top of your distros kernel.

Dotdev,

But would you need flatpak and snap with aur

help with users in ubuntu 23.04

Hi everybody, I recently reinstalled ubuntu 23.04 on my laptop. I had a backup of my old home and copied that into my new home after installation, installed updates and rebooted. Sadly, I forgot to make myself the owner of those files before rebooting. Instead of the login screen where you would normally enter your password, It...

Dotdev,

That is why forks like librewolf exist.

Dotdev,

Have you tried switching off the energy saving option

Windows and Android apps for downloading and reading textbooks

I am in need of reader applications that are specifically optimized for textbooks. I would really appreciate if the application allows to search for and download textbooks directly without being restricted to content within a specific region/country, bookmark pages and have a simple and clean UI, apart from which I do not have...

Dotdev,

There is Myne but it doesn’t have the sync capability.

Then koreader but cannot download books but has sync.

Both are for Android.

Dotdev,

A music player maybe like clementine

Dotdev, (edited )

Turn off secure boot and just check if anyone has ever run your device with linux before. And kde plasma is a de not a distro.

Dotdev,

Good to know

Dotdev,

No manjaro never do it

Dotdev,

Im in India.

Dotdev,

They come slightly above the budget

Dotdev,

The keyboard is something I abuse on all my things including my phone so …

Dotdev,

Only Intel is there in my area.

Dotdev,

You mean the t480

Dotdev,

Well the point is it should be linux compatible and I don’t game so it is an overkill.

Dotdev,

Yeah x1 are slightly pricey

Dotdev,

What kind of spec is that ?
