Nothing illegal under US (specifically Nevada) or local law. You know what that includes. (In case you don’t know what that includes, I mean child pornography [anything that fails the Dost Test], sexually interacting with minors, etc.) We have a zero tolerance policy for anything that fails the Dost test. Anything violating it will result in an immediate ban and removal of images. No admitting to anything that could cause the server to go under investigation, such as looking at child porn.
Unfortunately I have been shown that there is promotion of pedophilia on that site. Although there may not be actually illegal content.
Here in Denmark laws are pretty good, and protect renters. We also have a system that I can best translate as “housing to benefit the communality”, that is a semi public system to provide cheap housing for ordinary people (originally workers).
That might explain why we have a relatively low degree of home owners.
On the other hand, AFAIK Sweden did a lot more than we did in the 70’s and 80’s to provide cheap rental housing. Yet they have more home owners?

I agree it’s normally too expensive for my taste too. But here all phones were expensive anyway at the time, because there were only a few brands that cared to have their phones approved for sale in Denmark. $100 USD was the absolute cheapest you could get that was legal, this cost about $200-250.
This is not as bad as what Digg did way back, and then Digg very quickly became irrelevant.
But it’s kind of in the same direction, and I suspect that this could easily have a negative impact. Creating desperate noise that will drown out meaningful content and debate.
I know some people left reddit, but are we sure they actually lost more users than they gained from all the noise?
I haven’t used reddit or even visited the site since the policy change, which was the last drop for me. So I only know what I hear and read from other people, and I never see any solid data.
Spez copying more of Elons dumb ideas can only make it worse. but I’m not surprised if they have traffic about as usual, although IMO reddit has become steadily worse since Ellen Pao was fired in 2015, after banning revenge porn.
I’m guessing that is the shitstorm Spez was referring to, when he claimed those blow over. The difference obviously being that the shitstorm against Pao was lead by crazies, and the shitstorm now is way more legitimate.
I absolutely agree on your logic, reddit has lost a lot of valuable contributors, and should therefore lose in the long run. But sometimes reality is weird, and doesn’t behave according to even the best theories.
No doubt reddit has become worse, but to really suck apparently doesn’t preclude success. Let’s for arguments sake say reddit is now full of people with a certain level of intelligence. But maybe people of that like to stick together? And there are a lot of them!
But the vast majority of content is made by a tiny fraction of the user base
Yes, I agree that’s a crucial point, question is if there are enough left to allow reddit to stay relevant. They are still a huge forum, that is valuable to have an influence on.
As long as they can maintain traffic, they may still recover.
Good point, I guess I meant success financially as in surviving. From a content quality standpoint I think reddit had already been declining for years when the API debacle started.
Debates are generally better here on Lemmy despite being probably only 1% the size of reddit.
Obviously a bit thin skinned, but IMO lemmy.ml can do what they want with their moderation. It is not anybody else’s decision how they moderate, except of course keeping it legal.
Seems to me almost all those comments are somewhat offensive, for instance calling people tankies, claiming they should go back under their stone, and frequently use the word fuck, as if those are some sort of argument. I’m guessing rule 2 is something about not being rude. Personally I find that perfectly OK not to allow rude comments.
OP should “read the room” and terms better, then maybe they could have a proper debate.
PS:
Rule 2 of lemmy.ml includes: "Be respectful, especially when disagreeing. " Clearly that rule is ignored over and over again by the above user.
I’m shocked the statement that lemmy.ml can moderate as they want is in any way controversial, yet here we are, and this post has about a third downvotes.
No it’s not, they may walk the line, but if they cross it, the law will ultimately be enforced. So in the long run, a service can only exist if it is kept legal.
Posts like this posted here from time to time.
I’m not sure what you mean, but yes there are repeated attacks on lemmy.ml, and it’s getting tiring, because it always turns out to be very speculative, and not really an issue.
an instance has a very strong political view and even a censorship
They are moderating according to their own rules. Rule 2: “Be respectful, especially when disagreeing. Everyone should feel welcome here.” Clearly the above poster violated this rule over and over.
It looks like an instance and community policies must be somehow better visible.
Thank you. I find it sad that so many people don’t seem to understand that their right to free speech, is not a right to dictate other people, or force themselves on whatever forum they want.
You are missing the point of the book IMO. The threat is not necessarily external.
It was pretty easy to see totalitarianism as a dangerous global trend at the time, since it was in Germany, Italy, Spain, Soviet Union, China, Eastern Europe. Apart from Eastern Europe, these countries all “chose” it for themselves.
One of the big winners of the Unity debacle is the free and open source Godot Engine, which has seen its funding soar to a much more impressive level as Unity basically gave them free advertising.
My wife has a few things on YouTube she made with Godot, and she has noticed a significant increase in traffic, since Unity made their blunder.
Godot really deserves their increased popularity and donations, it’s absolutely amazing what they have achieved as a true Open Source project that is absolutely 100% free to use, and gives 100% control to game developers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Alphabet has used data from all these sources all the time.
That’s actually the reason I don’t use gmail except for registering Android, or use google calender, or google search except occasionally. I have my youtube account separate from my Android, and I don’t allow any cloud services, like photo or any other storage or sync services.
The power Google can gain from using these things in combination is huge, just like Facebook influenced the 2016 US presidential election, Google/Alphabet could use this for both political and financial gains to an enormous degree, that would have been completely unheard of prior to Internet becoming widely used.
