Buffalox,

This is the third day in a row with insane losses for Russia, today it passes 1000 personnel!

I’m guessing it’s still the Russian attempt at a push on the eastern front. Except this is even worse for the Russians, than when Wagner pushed against Bakhmut.

Google Pixel 8's Tensor G3 GPU tests show weak performance but decent efficiency (m.gsmarena.com)

Google teamed up with Samsung once again to build the Tensor G3, the chipset that powers the new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. It comes out of Samsung’s 4nm foundries and features a 9-core CPU (1x Cortex-X3 + 4x A715 + 4x A510) and an ARM Mali-G715 GPU.

Funny how one of the criticisms against the Xiaomi 13T Pro I posted about a few days ago was the Dimensity 9200+ SOC.

I’ve never heard anybody complain about the SOC in Pixel phones.

Yet the Dimensity 9200+ SOC in the Xiaomi 13T Pro is way faster and more efficient than Tensor G2 in the Pixel 7, and remains faster and more efficient than Tensor G3 in the Pixel 8. In fact it’s only beat by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on Android.

“except for the SOC” lemmy.world/post/6513457 Top comment, 9 upvotes?

But no one comments about the way weaker SOC for the Pixel phone?!?!

lemmy.world/post/6286959?scrollToComments=true

So a slightly weaker SOC in the Xiaomi 13T Pro than the absolute best in any Android phone is worse, than a way worse SOC in the Pixel 8 Pro that is way more expensive?

The Pixel 8 Pro Tensor G3 doesn’t even match the 2 years older Snapdragon 8 gen 1 which came out in q4 2021.

Buffalox,

This Tensor G3 chip doesn’t even match the 2 years older Snapdragon 8 gen 1 from 2021.

There are cheaper phones with way better SOC like the new Dimensity 9200+ Which is both faster and more efficient.

The Pixel Phone is a cool phone in some ways, but the SOC absolutely isn’t on par with what other companies have. At best it would be ranked fourth after Apple, Qualcomm and Mediatek who are all way ahead.

Buffalox, (edited )

Either faster or more power efficient. Compared to the Pixel 8 Pro / Tensor G3, there are options that are better at both.

Buffalox,

Yes I understand some may have security concerns, we debated that too, that’s not the point here. The point was specifically the criticism of the SOC, which IMO is absolutely stellar.

I’m surprised there is absolutely zero criticism in a major thread on the Pixel 8 here with 145 posts. When the Tensor chips are clearly worse on both speed and efficiency? Considering how much attention the issue got regarding the Xiaomi 13T Pro, despite it’s both cheaper and has a way better SOC.

Maybe astroturfing is an issue, but it is illegal in almost all countries, so I hope not.

Battery life <> life span

Life is how many hours on a charge, while life span is how many charges.

According to GSMarena the battery life of the Pixel 7a is 76h, The Samsung S23 is 101h. S23 Ultra is 126h.

76 hour for the Pixel 7a is a pretty poor result.

Buffalox,

Putin accidentally exterminating Nazis as he promised.

Buffalox,

Yes those are very high too, overall it must have been one of the worst days of the war for the Russians.

Buffalox, (edited )

Wow basically one huge battle on the Eastern front that failed, causes the worst losses yet for Russia!

This is confirmed by the numbers released by Ukraine defense.

Buffalox,

donating

That means they are given for free.

Buffalox, (edited )

It is Europe that has pressured on this, Poland did for a long time donating MIG with other countries. While USA held back on F-16.

It was not until Denmark and Netherlands went solo and decided to donate F-16 that USA followed.

Undoubtedly USA is the biggest single donor to Ukraine, and as a European I praise them for that. But the biggest donors per capita and compared to economy, are the baltic countries and Poland.

Buffalox,

I’m not sure that has been finally decided yet. Sweden say they will send Gripen fighter jets if Turkey allow them into NATO.

This sounds very sensible to me, because as a NATO country Sweden will be better protected, and can more easily free some of their ressources.

Shame on Turkey for blocking Sweden’s entry into NATO.

Buffalox, (edited )

If you are concerned about logistics, you don’t just sit around and wait and wait and do nothing. You begin to find solutions.

USA held European countries back, with an argument of not escalating and thread of Russia going nuclear. Which is complete bullshit IMO.

Maybe the administration was/is worried about the Republican half that are parroting Russian talking points?

USA has stated that they want Europe to carry our fair share of the burden, which is 100% understandable, so maybe there also are political games we are not aware of? One thing is for sure, USA did not want to be frontrunner regarding either tanks or fighter jets. Maybe to make Europe take greater responsibility, which frankly we aren’t used to, but my own country Denmark, has tried to do our part, together with several other European countries, while a few seem to be holding back.

Buffalox,

Maybe that’s it, all I know is that USA has avoided to pioneer any help that can be used offensively. Or at least that’s what they claim. What’s really going on behind closed doors is hard to tell.

Denmark being very progressive on Ukraine aid which we usually aren’t on such things. is to put it mildly “interesting”. The Danish government is very pro American, all the parties of the government have long histories of cooperation with USA in everything military and intelligence, including the Thule base in Greenland. We also warned USA about nukes going to Cuba, which basically started the cold war. And the Danish government boasted about stellar cooperation with USA when the Snowden shit hit the fan.

I think USA is trying to deflect some of their help, through European initiatives, they may well be involved in.

As we can see on the numbers, USA is by far the biggest contributor.

Buffalox,

IDK sounds kind of evil, although it might help other countries that Russia have their eyes on. Like for instance Kazakhstan Georgia and Belarus.

There is no way Russia is a threat to NATO apart from using nukes, and then it’s probably game over for everybody.

Buffalox, (edited )

These numbers seem pretty extreme to me, especially 91 APV! What’s going on?

I hope this signifies a further decline in Russian capability, like it’s beginning to really fall apart for them.

Edit:

This is allegedly record losses for Russia, due to a big offensive that failed badly.

Edit 2: Russian offensive that failed.

Buffalox, (edited )

Yes thank you, I had already just viewed it, and added it to my comment.

Really great explanation of what’s going on.

Buffalox, (edited )

The SOC is supposed to be very good, especially the one in the Pro version, it’s a bran new SOC that is supposed to beat the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which is currently considered the best for Android on the market.

I can’t find comparing benchmarks yet, but for sure it’s better than the older gen, since it’s now based on the latest gen Arm, and the Pro has a way more powerful GPU.

Edit PS:

I found this Geekbench test, where it’s slightly faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

notebookcheck.net/MediaTek-Dimensity-9200-Process…

The GPU side is very fast too, it’s the Immortalis-G715 MC11 the newest most powerful original Arm GPU AFAIK.

notebookcheck.net/ARM-Immortalis-G715-MP11-GPU-Be…

Only Adreno 740 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) and Apple m1/m2 beat it in 3DMark. I saw a review that showed it maxes the frame-rate in all the games they tested. Unfortunately I can’t remember which, because I’ve basically seen all there are on YouTube yesterday.

Edit PPS:

The GPU is actually faster than iPhone 15 Pro Max!!

That’s because the iPhone throttles already after 2 minutes, and runs at only 65%, while the Xiaomi 13T Pro maintains 95% performance after ½ an hour of GPU intensive gaming.

Buffalox, (edited )

Maybe, I don’t think government officials should use Chinese phones. But for me personally, I don’t really think they do much spying on private citizens. What would be the point? In that regard I think Google and Apple are equally big concerns, but unfortunately you either have to live with that, or jailbreak your phone.

I used to do that, using Android AOSP without Google apps. As free as it gets. But honestly I can’t be bothered anymore. I wish there was a free option that has full functionality, but there isn’t, because the security features in everything official like public services and banking relies on the proprietary security features of either Google or Apple to work.

So unless our government gives a shit about this, I just have to accept the sorry state of lousy security our technology in general is in.

Buffalox,

Here’s a comparison of the Camera between iPhone 15 Pro Max, Galaxy S23 Ultra and Xiaomi 13T Pro.

I know we can’t expect it to beat those 2 others, but it’s matching them in most cases IMO.

Buffalox, (edited )

Again, if our government and intelligence services don’t care why should I?

I know one thing for sure, and that is our government (Denmark) allow and cooperate with USA to spy on us, I doubt they voluntarily do the same for China.

I prefer USA over China when it comes to international cooperation, but I don’t share the alarmist tendency some have towards Chinese phones. If China had systemic surveillance through phones, I’m sure it would be stopped by EU/USA government and intelligence services.

In short, I don’t believe your claim. Whereas Apple/Google are real problems.

Buffalox, (edited )

Wow, here the pro is 4990,- DKK = € 669,- for the 12 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD. Including 25% sales tax.

The non pro is 3990,- DKK = € 537,- for the 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD. Including 25% sales tax.

The Pro is an insanely good deal IMO.

IDK about the software, I know there is bloatware, but it should be possible to uninstall. The new MIUI 14 should be pretty good reviewers say.

The camera is absolutely amazing, no doubt about that. Just look it up on YouTube. Absolutely amazing night shots, and very good tele and macro too, although not as good as Samsung S23 Ultra.

I found this comparison very good, although I don’t agree with the conclusion: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY01sKTnJPA&t=32s

Buffalox,

Absolutely agree to that, I personally don’t use Chrome or Chromium. Just my little resistance against Google. ;)

Buffalox,

Haha I disagree on that, my current phone is 6.8 inches, I wouldn’t mind if it was slightly bigger. But I don’t want a foldable phone.

Buffalox,

unfortunately this is the trend for high end phones. For some reason lower range phones are more likely to have it, just like the 3,5 inch minijack for headphones.

Phone makers claim it’s for better water resistance, except Nokia has one with the minijack that is waterproof.

Buffalox,

Considering the USB is only 2.0 it might have been handy in some cases.

Buffalox,

Absolutely, we use MicroSD all the time for our Raspberry Pis, It’s fast compact and cheap.

These phones only have USB2, so for fast transfer, you have to use something cloud based. A MicroSD would have been nice.

Buffalox,

blaming us for losing all their data

I have absolutely no clue how that could work? Didn’t they install the SD cards themselves?

Buffalox,

Don’t try to apply common sense to it,

OK, I guess that kind of customers exist. I’ve personally been selling computers back from the mid 80’s to the mid 90’s, I’ve never had that kind of customer. Not even once. Kind of strange, considering how bad I hear things can be.

Buffalox,

Compared to Afghanistan where girls can’t get an education, I bet these Christians consider themselves very tolerant and progressive.

Religion excels at making idiots into massive idiots, and empower them too.

Buffalox,

Unicorn tears might be a little harder though.

Nah it’s just expensive, and called printer ink. You can buy it anywhere if you have money.

Buffalox,

I guess that’s why used car prices are through the roof too. My neighbor bought a nice but 6 year old car 2½ years ago, he can sell it now at he same price he gave! We bought an older car 4 years ago, and there is no way we can get a similar deal today, prices in this segment have almost doubled! And the prices were already inflated 4 years ago.

It’s ridiculous how expensive used cars have become.

Buffalox,

I was told in the 90’s that in America if your car was 3 years old, your neighbor might worry you weren’t doing too well, and you could buy 6 year old luxury cars for peanuts.

Buffalox, (edited )

buy what you can afford

Generally a good idea with everything tech. It tends to get better and cheaper. So 100% don’t buy features you don’t need.

the industry stagnated and is nothing but paying for buzzwords now

I disagree, while it may be somewhat true on innovation, there are significant incremental improvements from generation to generation. Both in more powerful and efficient SOC in both CPU and GPU. Better Cameras, and better screens that have better nits and efficiency, and also some software features.

I’m especially impressed by SOC improvements, considering the expense has become insane to use the better production processes. The complexity of it is so extreme. The collective effort to put a new SOC product to production is estimated at about 50000 people. Just one EUV light needed to make a 4nm SOC cost about $100 million! Still they continue to progress the technology, despite the mind boggling difficulties.

The same goes for cameras, they improve significantly each year. An ordinary phone today can do what would take 1000s of dollars of equipment before digital photography. And digital photography started out being pretty bad, with the only advantage being you didn’t need film. And it’s still improving.

Flip phones might not be completely new, but they are improving and getting cheaper, that’s at least one form of innovation. So the industry isn’t entirely dead yet.

Buffalox,

It’s been 1 year and 7 months now of this, Russian losses must be way worse than they ever anticipated, yet they keep at it?!

I wonder what it takes for the Russians to just go home??

I find it hard to believe any Russian leader truly think they have a realistic path to victory.

Buffalox,

Google wants you to use cloud storage.

Buffalox,

What an asshole, there is no way 1 day warning is reasonable. Republicans are a bunch of sociopaths.

Buffalox,

Thank you. 😀

Buffalox,

Thank you. 😀 This mistake was a really bad one. I do NOT support pedophilia, but it may have looked like it. So better to admit fault.

But I also believe truth is more important than ego.

Buffalox,

Yes, that part was a bit confusing to me at first, since they already described zero tolerance against anything not adhering to official guidelines Dost Test, which is new to me.

But it makes perfect sense now, they only follow those rules strictly because they must. They would probably love if they could break them if they thought they could get away with it.

When I was shown a link to what they call “MAP”, it very quickly became crystal clear what it was about.

Buffalox,

Thank you, you are very kind. It was meant as a joke.
