#today it still remains too hot and humid to do any real #garden work, but the picking must go on no matter what. Picture shows today's surplus set out to share with the neighbors. Note: I share everything EXCEPT the #sweetcorn . That particular garden gold is exclusively for the consumption of the gardener! #gardening #allotment #NewEngland
Today's harvest: a handful of beans, including a purple bean that got massively overgrown, and maybe half a point of blueberries.
The blueberries are almost done for the season, and the pole beans are decreasing production a bit-- can it be too freaking hot for them? The cucumbers are picking up steam.
Today was the first really hot day of the year, near 100°F (37°C). I spent the morning doing garden work, and kept myself cool inside for the afternoon. Here’s a new bloomer in the garden today: a nearly eye-level, grey-headed coneflower, which I call “lazy coneflower” because of its drooping petals. I love how they sway gently in the slightest breeze without a care. To me, they say “summer” in the garden. 🌻🌞
In "this is brand new to me" news, I had no idea there was a PINK blueberry. The variety is called Pink Lemonade. I might need to acquire one or two of them.
Growing chillies is one of the most satisfying exercises in that a single plant, or several plants, can provide a constant supply of spice for a wide range of meals throughout the year.
I started a #gardening blog earlier this year. I haven’t felt inspired to post anything in at least a couple months. I kind got tired of the whole ‘chasing likes’ thing and the gardening/homesteading community on Instagram is full of bigoted fascists. Anyhow, this is my attempt to introduce my gardening blog to the #fediverse. I’ve had way more fun discussing my #garden & #Bloomscrolling here anyways.
In my garden it is WAY easier to grow spinach than basil. I usually grow basil in big pots so I can keep and eye on it but have masses of spinach out in the garden. So, when I make pesto, I find that cutting at least 50/50 with spinach makes the basil go much farther, you can barely tasted the spinach especially if you like your pesto garlicky and cheesy. I try to keep jars of it in the fridge to make quick pasta meals when it's hot and all else fails.
Today's harvest, which will probably be the only harvest today since it's insanely humid AND supposed to storm most of the day.
We have one very small blueberry bush, and it has easily pumped out at least four or five pints of blueberries in the last few weeks. Clearly, the soil is right for blueberries, so we're planning to add a few more out there.
It’s been a wild week for the open social web (dev.to)
