This one left me in a state of palpable depression.
Though it's only the end if you don't count Eoin Colfer's authorized continuation, And Another Thing..., which I thought did a decent job capturing the feel of Adams's works (and rectified a few things I thought went wonky toward the end).
@tbweber@bookstodon@bookstadon I will be starting on And Another Thing if only just because this ending is so sad... I remember vaguely (it's been a while) that I had found the book to be not bad, but I did miss Adam's writing. At least reading that book would probably at least make me feel better than I felt while finishing Mostly Harmless. I wish there were more Hitchhiker's books by Douglas Adams.
@arensb@sciencefiction@reading@bookstodon definitely! I somewhat selfishly wish he had been able to complete the Dirk Gently series and written a lot more books! Really greatly missed.
When I read about Nikolai contemplating with sadness and agitation the rift between him and his son, Arkady, these lines broke my heart. A simple matter of a generation gap, when told from the POV of the father, was especially poignant considering that Nikolai put in considerable effort to make himself "up to date" to get closer to his son, and then had to overhear Bazarov call him "out of date" without Arkady disagreeing with him. #fathersandsons by #turgenev @bookstodon#bookquotes#reading
@bookstodon Bazarov had even made fun of his cello playing, saying that playing the cello is not a fitting activity for a man of his age, thankfully out of his hearing.
So many of us have probably been convinced how "out of date"/ "uncool" people of older generations have been. Now that I am older, I think that we were probably not always fair in our assessment, or our behavior
These lines made me wonder: how many people actually believe in God, and not the Institution, out of fear or just because it's what everyone does.
"… it can’t be just him who believes in me.
Really in me. Not in a pair of golden horns. Not in a great big building. Not in the dread of hot iron and knives. Not in paying your temple dues because everyone else does. Just in the fact that the Great God Om really exists." @bookstodon#SmallGods#terrypratchett#reading#discworld#bookquotes
@DavidBruchmann@bookstodon I think you made a very interesting point. Anyways, thanks for sharing your beliefs, I liked reading about it. Maybe you can consider writing about it if you are into writing. Maybe it may do some good to whoever reads it. I am not a writer, (so maybe wrong) but I think writing, just by itself, can also make the writer feel good.
I am with the Devil (Mr Woland) on this. Manuscripts don't burn
Art cannot be destroyed. It will live on as long as humanity lives on. Those trying to erase an idea/any form of art through censorship are engaging in a futile attempt. The existence of this book itself is a testament of this fact.
Indeed; the confusion has been going on for over 2000 yrs...🤣 🙄

"‘These good people,’ the prisoner spoke and, hastily adding ‘Hegemon’, went on: ‘... haven’t any learning and have confused everything I told them. Generally, I’m beginning to be afraid that this confusion may go on for a very long time. And all because he writes down the things I say incorrectly.’" from #themasterandmargarita by #mikhailbulgakov
