Huh. It just occurred to me that not everyone reads all the time. Like, there’s a bunch of people without books they’re reading right now. That concept is so bizarre to me. I’ve always got several books going. Ebooks, audiobooks and physical copies of books. If you don’t read anymore, when and why did you stop? No judgement. I’m genuinely curious. @bookstodon #bookstodon #books #reading #amreading

I'm always shocked by how expensive basic European experiences are in the US. One of my favorite things is high street shops. You have a bunch of stores with apartments above them, so you can always live within walking distance of basically everything. In the US they separate things into commercial and residential districts so you have to drive everywhere.

Areas that allow mixing residential and commercial buildings are so rare that supply & demand sends costs through the roof. In Europe living in an apartment above stores is a budget option for people who can't afford homes, in the US you basically have to be wealthy and often those apartments cost as much as an entire house.

paul_ipv6,
@paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange avatar

@malwaretech

even within the US, cost of living can vary insanely. my partner was renting a 1 BR basement apt in SF. for the same as that rent, i was paying mortgages on two houses, with total of 7500 sq ft, both houses having 3 car garages and views of mountains. admittedly, both houses were in suburbs in smaller towns in non-coast states.

This week I've been mainly reading, No. 94.
I've been rather disappointed by William Gibson & Bruce Sterling's The Difference Engine (1990/2011), which while presenting an immersive depiction of a world in which Babbage's 'computer' had become an equivalent of later computing (both influenced by early fiction & going on to influence later books), sacrifices plot for atmosphere; the plot such as it is really not much & offers no real pay-off. Sadly, style over substance!

paul_ipv6,
@paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange avatar

@jerry

we had a cat while i was in high school, one of the most consistently overweight of the cats we've had. my dad usually left for work earlier, so he'd feed Pip. but Pip would wail so loudly and pitifully that not infrequently, he'd convince my mom he hadn't been fed and would get 2nd breakfast.

once, my mom was defrosting a roast beef, normally locked in the microwave so Pip couldn't get to it. but she was distracted, microwaved something and left the roast out. Pip managed to eat almost half a full roast beef before mom caught him. come dinner time, a couple of hours later, he was sitting by his dish and howling because there was no cat food in it.

best of luck dealing with Thor's tragic, neglected life and his commentaries on this injustice. ;)

bright 11 yr olds can handle all sorts of things, though you may wind up having some deep discussions about them.

by 11, i'd already read lord of the rings several times, done most of everything dickens had written, and hard SF like hogan and asimov.

if he likes the word play and humor in hitchhiker, pratchett discworld is a good bet. might try the vlad taltos series for sword and sorcery. martin's tuf voyaging collection is worth a read.

    @jerry

    i think they think that paying for expensive empty buildings lowers profits and that they can't get out of all those leases. i do also think they have more "control" over folks in office and they are control freaks.

    i think real estate companies are worrried about a massive crash/plummet but they don't have the leverage to force companies to make workers return to office.

    paul_ipv6,
    @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange avatar

    @jerry

    i think it's both. some of the commercial leases, particularly in hot markets like seattle, SF, NYC, are huge. utiltiies and such are noise. and companies are doing all sorts of other insane things to lower costs so that soft revenue still results in profit. office space and employees are two of the biggest costs and you can only keep firing people for so long.

    but yes, i also think that old school managers still truly believe (wrongly) that remote work is less efficient. dinosaurs have to die or retire before this cultural fallacy dies with them.

    There’s an attorney on TikTok that has been playing the recorded phone call between Trump and the Georgia SoS (the infamous “just find me 11780 votes” call) - I’ve listened to it twice now and I have to say that I recognize the approach: it’s the same thing I see seasons sales people do. It’s the same thing I’ve seen startup CEOs do. It’s a pressure tactic that works pretty well in other, less coup-y, contexts. I am quite impressed that the Georgia team held firm.

    The trial is going to be fascinating to watch.

Gradually the reader sees the enormity of what might be lost if one of the characters takes the wrong step. For me, with all that's falling apart in the world in which I live, this is a mirror to us. Today in Labor History August 25, 1819: Allan Pinkerton was born. He founded the Pinkerton private police force, whose strike breaking detectives (Pinkertons, or 'Pinks') gave us the word 'fink' as they slaughtered dozens of workers in various labor struggles. Ironically, Pinkerton was a violent, radical leftist as a youth. He fought cops in the streets as a member of the Chartist Movement. He had to flee the UK in order to not be imprisoned and executed. Yet in America, he became the nation’s first super cop. He created the secret service. He foiled an assassination attempt against Lincoln. He fine-tuned the art of spying on activists and planting agents provocateur in their ranks. His agents played a major role in destroying the miners’ union in the 1870s, as portrayed in my novel, “Anywhere But Schuylkill.” Later, they assassinated numerous organizers with the IWW and came within inches of successfully getting Big Bill Hayward convicted on trumped up murder charges.

    Anywhere But Schuylkill will be out in early September, 2023, from Historium Press: https://www.thehistoricalfictioncompany.com/it/michael-dunn
