Art cannot be destroyed. It will live on as long as humanity lives on. Those trying to erase an idea/any form of art through censorship are engaging in a futile attempt. The existence of this book itself is a testament of this fact.

@tbweber @bookstodon @bookstadon I will be starting on And Another Thing if only just because this ending is so sad... I remember vaguely (it's been a while) that I had found the book to be not bad, but I did miss Adam's writing. At least reading that book would probably at least make me feel better than I felt while finishing Mostly Harmless. I wish there were more Hitchhiker's books by Douglas Adams.

Fathers and Sons by Turgenev is an interesting character study of Bazarov, a self-proclaimed nihilist in the backdrop of the ideological differences between the “fathers” and “sons”. It also looks at the inevitability of the generational gap between sons (Bazarov and Arkady) and their respective fathers, and the futility of trying to reject emotions. (details linked)

Routledge International Handbook of Ignorance Studies

Once treated as the absence of knowledge, ignorance today has become a highly influential topic in its own right, commanding growing attention across the natural and social sciences where a wide range of scholars have begun to explore the social life and political issues involved in the distribution and strategic use of not knowing.

Ok, if you're in a book club and the book really doesn't speak to you...do you force yourself to finish it?

Maybe a result of being in the middle of a lengthy and serious writing project, but I've bounced out of a lot of books this year, and a lot of them have been from book club. Maybe I should be pushing myself more, but this isn't grad school, so...I don't know.

The whole "bovine" joke in by was hilarious. It got me thinking: how would I feel if an animal I was about to consume came up to me enthusiastically conveying its consent for being eaten? I will be horrified, just like Arthur! But why?
Will it be better to eat against its consent instead? Why?
Then… what about salad's consent?!🤣
Interesting thought experiment...

@bookstodon

"A large dairy animal approached Zaphod Beeblebrox’s table, a large fat meaty quadruped of the bovine type with large watery eyes, small horns and what might almost have been an ingratiating smile on its lips. ‘Good evening,’ it lowed and sat back heavily on its haunches, ‘I am the main Dish of the Day. May I interest you in parts of my body?’ It harrumphed and gurgled a bit, wriggled its hind quarters into a more comfortable position and gazed peacefully at them. Its gaze was met by looks of startled bewilderment from Arthur and Trillian, a resigned shrug from Ford Prefect and naked hunger from Zaphod Beeblebrox. ‘Something off the shoulder, perhaps,’ suggested the animal, ‘braised in a white wine sauce?’ ‘Er, your shoulder?’ said Arthur in a horrified whisper."--quote from the Restaurant at the end of the Universe by Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series).
"‘You mean this animal actually wants us to eat it?’ whispered Trillian to Ford. ‘Me?’ said Ford, with a glazed look in his eyes. ‘I don’t mean anything.’ ‘That’s absolutely horrible,’ exclaimed Arthur, ‘the most revolting thing I’ve ever heard.’ ‘What’s the problem, Earthman?’ said Zaphod, now transferring his attention to the animal’s enormous rump. ‘I just don’t want to eat an animal that’s standing there inviting me to,’ said Arthur, ‘it’s heartless.’ ‘Better than eating an animal that doesn’t want to be eaten,’ said Zaphod. ‘That’s not the point,’ Arthur protested. Then he thought about it for a moment. ‘All right,’ he said, ‘maybe it is the point. I don’t care, I’m not going to think about it now. I’ll just . . . er . . .’"--quote 2 from the Restaurant at the end of the Universe by Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series).

When I read about Nikolai contemplating with sadness and agitation the rift between him and his son, Arkady, these lines broke my heart. A simple matter of a generation gap, when told from the POV of the father, was especially poignant considering that Nikolai put in considerable effort to make himself "up to date" to get closer to his son, and then had to overhear Bazarov call him "out of date" without Arkady disagreeing with him.
by
@bookstodon

For the first time he was clearly aware of the rift between him and his son. He had a foreboding that with each passing day it would become greater and greater. It turned out that he'd spent days on end one winter in St Petersburg reading away at the latest works of fiction all for nothing; all for nothing had he listened to the conversations of the young men; all for nothing had he been overjoyed when he'd succeeded in inserting his own word into their bubbling talk. - a quotation from Fathers and Sons by Turgenev.

@bookstodon Bazarov had even made fun of his cello playing, saying that playing the cello is not a fitting activity for a man of his age, thankfully out of his hearing.

So many of us have probably been convinced how "out of date"/ "uncool" people of older generations have been. Now that I am older, I think that we were probably not always fair in our assessment, or our behavior

Nihilism (and Bazarov) in a nutshell for you 🙄
"I see,’ interrupted Pavel Petrovich, ‘I see. Meaning you’re convinced of all this and have decided for yourselves not to do anything serious about anything.’
‘And we’ve decided not to do anything about anything,’ Bazarov repeated sombrely.
‘And just swear at everything?’
‘And swear at everything.’
‘And that’s called nihilism?’
‘And that’s called nihilism,’"

LOL now that's an interesting piece of logic 🤣🤣

‘The argument goes something like this: “I refuse to prove that I exist,” says God, “for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.”
‘“But,” says Man, “the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn’t it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don’t. QED.”

Small Gods is a masterful fantasy comic satire on religious institutions, religious fundamentalism, philosophy, and the weaponisation of religious fanaticism for political power, set in the Discworld. It explores how religious beliefs and faith shift and change over time, from being centred on the deity to being centred on the religious institution itself. Rereading this was an absolute joy!
