I'm still looking for authors who have completed NaNoWriMo to come on my #WriteTalkWednesday show and discuss their writing (promo a book or two) and how they made it through #NaNoWriMo
Will need to be avail 6pm CST (central time) on Wedesdays in November.
Who would like reviewer copies of my new short story collection POWER TO YIELD AND OTHER STORIES; and/or the latest anthology I edited, ROSALIND'S SIBLINGS?
I made a request form! (Pls don't self-reject from requesting, you don't need to have a huge platform!)
Very interesting novella. Wells puts us in the mind of a security robot that's slipped its leash. The book takes us through its struggles, and the struggles of those around it, to wrestle with its humanity. I really enjoyed this, and am looking forward to the rest of the series.
I feel Clarke tries to make this a new Hitchhiker's Guide, but no one does it like Adams. The framework isn't grounded enough in normality for the juxtaposition to hit you with the same impact. Leaned into SFF historical reference (a la Ready Player One) too much for my tastes, but not so heavily that you'd lose something by not knowing the references. It was cute, exploring love and acceptance.
I currently #AmReading the 4th and final book of Devin Madson's The Reborn Empire series. I've been postponing this as I don't want it to end. I love the characters, the world, the dark/gritty vibes and, of course, Madson's writing :blobcataww:
If you know of similar books/series, send me your recs?
A super "Science Behind the Fiction" event at #PortobelloBookFestival with #DougJohnstone (THE SPACE BETWEEN US) and myself talking about FRIEND ME.
We chatted about writing sci-fi proudly, how other writing like journalism affects our fiction, and the joys & terrors of Enceladus and AI. Thrilled to hear the sequel to Doug's book is out next march. Sci-fi forever!
For lovely UK and Aussie people, the OverLondon audiobook is currently free for Spotify subscribers.
Why not put a smile on your dial by listening to Brendan McDonald (who read C.K. McDonnell's excellent Stranger Times - BSF 2023 Winner of Best Audio) work his magic? 😁
We were at the BFS awards when Caimh (C.K) won and we were so ridiculously happy for him and his wonderwife, Elaine. We owe them all the things for introducing us to Brendan. :blobsmilehappyeyes:
💜So grateful to the amazing @lyssachiavari, author of the incredible Iamos Trilogy, for these lovely words about the Chameleon Moon #Audiobook! Which drops this Halloween! 🎃
Who's ready for #OctaviaInOctober beginning with The Parable of the Sower and The Parable of the Talents? I'm hoping to read both this upcoming weekend! It's Octavia Butler, baby! #bookstodon#sff@bookstodon#ReadAlong
Dang, Seth Dickinson's 'Exordia' switched genres real fast there!
We started with an introspective, meditative ontological-philosophical character-based meeting of minds, and now suddenly aliens are dropping bombs and EMPs are razing civilization to the ground and we're in a military sci-fi rah rah defend against the invading aliens hoo-wah! thriller.
@bookstodon I finished a book last night that I didn't really enjoy. Not the story, nor the writing. It wasn't too long and it was entertaining enough that I didn't drop it though.
Then I picked up Fool's Assassin by #RobinHobb and it's such a pleasure to dive into a book by someone who truly knows how to write one.
And visiting loved characters again, of course.
downside of masto's particular set of affordances is I can't figure out who posted this, and who boosted it into my timeline. But thank you both!!
"Lester del Rey... intuited that what millions wanted from a publishing industry urgently optimizing to keep up with capitalism was to escape the modern age into a world where capitalism and industry had never happened. There is magic in that. At least I thought so, as a kid. But there’s also, in del Rey’s vision, a formulaic—let’s face it, industrial, rationalized—conception of culture and a pernicious nostalgia that courts sexism and white supremacy. Today, fantasy is, along with romance, our wildest, most flourishing genre. It might not be this way were it not for Lester del Rey, even if his legacy now is as the wizard so many writers and readers choose to battle against."
Is there a hashtag where publishers here post open calls for shorts or novellas? Particularly in #sff#scifi#fantasy I'm looking at opencall hashtags but none seem to be on writing.
