@bookstodon Just out of curiosity, how close are you to your reading goal for the year? I need to read 12 more books to meet the goal I set for myself. 📚📚📚📚

Not everyone works the same way, of course. We've discussed before that reading goals are counterproductive for many. Having a goal really helps me, but it doesn't work for everyone. Just like reading for pleasure and reading to write a review are very different processes.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon To motivate myself to keep a reading routine (not to read more, just to simply read), I have a wish to read 1 book per week. That's a wish (not a goal) to read at least 52 books per year. I'm on 61 atm which means I've succeeded keeping my routine, and it also means less pressure to keep at it during December which is always a b*tch of a month to keep routines...

Congrats to everyone picking up at least one book in 2023 🥳

Hello @bookstodon

I'm looking for sff books with female knights. I'm not picky with genre labels, I just really love my female knights 😌

Know of any?

I have read and loved:

  • Sam Darren's Dragonoak trilogy
  • Justin Lee Anderson's The Lost War
  • Craig Schaefer's The Wisdom's Grave trilogy

And currently I'm reading Tamora Pierce's Alanna: The First Adventure

@Starry1086 @bookstodon Thanks! Craig Schaefer's trilogy is also set in an urban fantasy/kind of a little bit sci-fi scene ... So October Daye sounds intriguing.

Tell me a good book you’ve read this year that you’d recommend.

I’ll start: Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom

@Likewise @bookstodon
The Will Of The Many by James Islington, a book I think more people should read. I was really (blissfully) shook by the ending.

And if you don't mind a rule-breaker (me) I want to add The Actual Star by Monica Byrne to the pile. It's one of those spec fic books that makes you a bit philosophical while reading it.

I currently the 4th and final book of Devin Madson's The Reborn Empire series. I've been postponing this as I don't want it to end. I love the characters, the world, the dark/gritty vibes and, of course, Madson's writing :blobcataww:

If you know of similar books/series, send me your recs?

Hello #bookstodon and @bookstodon
Forgive me for spamming you, but maybe you can help me? I'm trying to learn to use mastodon better, so I have a few questions about your habits.
Do you use both tag and group? Or just the one? What do you use it for? Examples:
To talk with others about books.
To find an online community I fit into.
To learn of new books I didn't know existed.
To broadcast my blog posts/reviews about books.
Other?

Does it work for you?
If you've read so far: Have a nice day☀️

@iamgaarden@mastodon.world avatar

@Funktious @bookstodon thx. yes I'm following some carefully chosen tags, but I don't follow the group because there's too much activity for my home feed (I mean me) to handle. Your reply underlines my experience, though: the tag works better for broadcasting and the group seems to form a communication platform (kind of). I wonder if it's possible to be part of that without actually following the group... 🤔 or maybe there's an instance for me to join that focuses on book talks

How can I get some out of @thestorygraph ?

Am I missing something? I feel like I am all alone in there. My profile linked below ⬇️

@Lullaby @thestorygraph @bookstodon I am keeping an eye on your replies because I'd like to know as well. I deleted my account because the only thing it gave me was stats based on my registered reads, and I can make a spreadsheet do the same. I want to be able to reply to people's reviews etc.

@diazona @Lullaby @thestorygraph @bookstodon Maybe in the future bookwyrm could be a thing, but for now I can't seem to find my book people (who share my taste) on mastodon/bookwyrm and I really greatly depend on a solution with a phone app. Hardcover is still 'in development' regarding the social aspect. So for now goodreads is the only solution to what I'm actually looking for (as far as I know). I can be patient 😅

So Mastodon #Book folks. If knowing nothing about the person you had to recommend a book (or maybe one fiction and one nonfiction) what would you go with? #Books #Bookstodon @bookstodon @bookstodons

iamgaarden,
@iamgaarden@mastodon.world avatar

@Laking86 @bookstodon @bookstodons Oh, very interesting question!
Fiction: Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Nonfiction: Jellyfish Age Backwards by Nicklas Brendborg

Tbh, I haven't read the nonfiction myself yet, but I really badly want to. Does it still count?

@weebdeluxe @bookstodon No more than two. It's usually a physical book + an ebook (if I want to read late at night without waking up my partner). Or it could be two books that are very different: a fantasy novel and a thriller, maybe.

A request for the #bookstodon crowd?

I'm looking for book bloggers/reviewers/people to follow. Someone who reads and posts a lot about speculative fiction, mystery, crime, thrillers... dark and gritty... thoughtful, clever stuff... whatever will blow my mind. The more they fall between genres, the better. Newer releases rather than old.

Is this you?
Do you follow them? Tag them pls.

Is there a #bookwyrm instance like this?

A little boost is always appreciated. Thx 😌
