Earlier this year I wrote a non-fiction article about my thought processes in worldbuilding. I have been obsessed with a future where central governments are no more, and everything is decentralised like the fediverse. The article is part of an anthology on Afro centered futurisms, and here is a Publishers Weekly announcement of the book. Description in the alt text.

In case anyone is wondering if there is any engagement on here— this is the list of every book recommended after I asked if you’d share one book you enjoyed this year. You can scroll underneath the post to see these, but I think seeing them all together shows the true awesomeness of the people on here.

Thanks for being pretty darn great ❤️

@clacksee @bookstodon I think I read this book twenty years or so ago....

Is there a hashtag where publishers here post open calls for shorts or novellas? Particularly in I'm looking at opencall hashtags but none seem to be on writing.

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@inkican yes. I'm a member of sfwa. What are you looking for, novellas? shorts? I don't see a link in your bio....

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@inkican ah okay 😊
I read your post and thought you were a publisher looking for stories.

Well, I've been writing for a long while now and only became eligible last year. Just keep going 😊

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@inkican I was too much of a coward to self publish but I did focus on sending short stories to magazines and anthologies and eventually got into one that pays sfwa qualifying rates. Its easier to have a short story or novella accepted than a novel.

What's the best novel you've read so far this year? I'd love some recommendations. Thank you.

@szilviavirag @bookstodon I enjoyed one by a Ugandan author, Whispers From Vera. A surprisingly comic story 😊

Yesterday I got author copies of my most recent book, a collection of short stories titled Where Rivers Go To Die. They look lovely and the red tones make me want to change my favourite colour from blue to red. You can find yourself a copy of this book on online stores.

These are stories I've written over twenty years, since the earliest I first wrote circa 2003-4

@owlislost @bookstodon I'm reading Flashforward by Robert J. Sawyer. I picked it up after seeing a recommendation on this universe, and its gripping. Should make an easy, fast paced read.

@surroundedbyidioms @bookstodon The one book about books and libraries (or perhaps three books because they made a triology) you might end up enjoying and change your mind is "Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

You perhaps were talking about non-fiction books but I just needed an excuse to talk about this book. It was a joy to read!

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@surroundedbyidioms @KatSpoonanana @bookstodon I liked that it was a ghost story, a fantasy book, but told like its a literal book. Almost like its a historical foction. That's the kind of stories I like, those books whose fantastic features creep up on you without screaming on the cover that its an otherworldly story.

review: "River Spirit" by Leila Aboulela

This is a piece of historical fiction that takes us to Sudan, during the 1880s, the end of the Ottoman empire. There are several main characters, but the one whose arc unites them all is a spirited young woman who loves the river as if it is her own mother. Her journey from the lush highlands, through the desert, to the cities of Sudan (mainly Al-Ubeid and Khartoum) introduces us to a young merchant turned Islamic scholar, a lout turned soldier, a mother-in-law who keeps her penchant for trading a secret, a widowed Scottish painter who wishes only to return to his daughter, and historical figures such as British Generals and Muhammad Ahmed ibn Abdullah, a self-styled messianic prophet and leader of the uprising against Egyptian rule.

5 stars, highly recommend. Follow me on for more!

@SallyStrange @bookstodon Stuck in an airport, very tired, so picked up an ebook of thid and just finished the opening. Its a pleasant, easy, fast read. Even for a tired mind! I'll be enjoying it!

Not sure about some of the wording, like calling nations and peoples "tribes" as colonialists did. Hope it gets better
