Autistic me:

Loves books but does not have the mental stamina to sit and read a book from start to finish for hours on end. So instead consumes short-form content online for hours and hours.

Yeah because this makes sense...

I have a very strange question, especially for this platform, but this is an area I know nothing about. My father has an old rifle that my grandfather gave him. It's the WWI era. I don't have it in front of me at the moment, but I am not quite sure what to do with it. I don't want to keep it but feel weird selling it. It's from WWI, so I would guess it may have some value for a museum or something like a museum?

Historical guns (or guns in general) are not in my wheelhouse.Anyone have ideas?

@dancinyogi WW2 US weapons are not typically rare. A few are worth money because of model, but mostly not. Museums are flooded with the things and may accept but probably won't display. Your best option is sale to a collector, either private sale through a site like gunbroker.com or, your best bet, simply take it to a gun store and see if they'll buy it. It's probably worth (depending on condition and specific make/model) at least $1000 but almost surely not more than $10,000.

@dancinyogi Same advice applies. Slightly more likely that it's worth money (again, depending on condition) but military rifles are pretty common. Chances are it's an '03 Springfield (bolt action WW1 rifle) or an M1 Garand (WW2 semi auto rifle.) Both of which are great guns, functionally, but again, not rare unless they have certain specific markings/stamps. Can you post a picture?

@dancinyogi Selling it to a responsible collector is likely your best bet. There are plenty of people out there who would love to own such a piece ESPECIALLY if you can document any of the provenance (even as simple as writing down what you know of your grandfather's time with the weapon, where he served, etc.) But it will sell even without that.

Hell, I'd be interested. (Though it's surely out of my price range.)
