With forewarning about a huge influx of users, you know Lemmy.ml will go down. Even if people go to join-lemmy.org/instances and disperse among the great instances there, the servers will go down....
It’s easy to discover communities on my instance via the dedicated page in the hamburger menu. But let’s say I want to follow a community on another instance, such as !lemmy . I might have found its name mentioned in a post or comment. When I click on the provided link, I’m thrown on that instances web page, from which I...
Don’t exactly know the best way for this to be made. I’m guessing a special page built into the platform might actually be the best way. It’d just provide a list of all communities the instance federates with in order of ascending age....
I’ve already started seeing a lot of redundant communities being made here that have already existed on other Lemmy instances, and lemmy.ml is at risk of centralization and overload, so now is a great time to raise awareness of other instances....
PopHeads and fans of pop music rejoice, I have an entire instance just for you. Come and post all of your pop music theories, favorite tracks, costumes, memes, snarky comments, and all other related things. Hell, create a new community if you like!
Will be creating more as interest demands, or create one of your own, we know there’s already a few fans of Camila Cabello there and I know I love CRJ :)
Oh, and to ease the stress, my registration is currently open for any lurkers
Is there a guide for how to register on multiple Lemmy instances? I am registered here, but noticed that I can’t subscribe to communities on other instances? I assume I need to register there as well, but how do I get my subscriptions on both instances to funnel into the same place?
Thanks! Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this
Nope you can subscribe to other lemmy instances. You just need to know their link. For example, if you want to follow my Taylor Swift community and become a full blown swiftie like me, you can do this: (Make sure All, All, and All are selected when searching)
This site is currently struggling to handle the amount of new users. I have already upgraded the server, but it will go down regardless if half of Reddit tries to join....
Indeed. If a big instance like lemmy.ml was to be shut down all the communities would be lost. This is simply not sustainable. Why would users put effort building a community if it could be gone at any time?
I’m confused. Help me out lemmy users/runners. It says “No Porn” on the homepage. But during sign up there’s a tickbox to “Show NSFW content” ?
So…only non-porn NSFW content is allowed?
Would lemmy.ml consider audio “porn” as porn? Or merely NSFW?
Because if there are communities on reddit that I want to still have access to via RSS and json after the API change, it’d be r/gonewildaudio r/gonewildaudible r/audiosgonewild r/darksideplayground r/PillowTalkaudio r/KinkyPillowTalkAudio r/eroticliterature r/GWASapphic r/gwascriptguild r/GoneWildAudioGay r/sexystories As this is a FOSS project, I presume only the lemmy.ml instance doesn’t allow porn?
Is there a Q&A style lemmy instance finder that does allow porn a la instances.social ?
Because join-lemmy.org/instances is all I could find and that doesn’t seem helpful.
How do I find the most popular porn supported instance? Thanks.
This was a message sent to me. The point they were trying make besides this is regarding archival of porn content being considered as NSFW. Also I am seeing massive complaint about Lemmy UI being very visually bloated compared to old.reddit.com, which is putting off many users, reminding them of the new.reddit.com travesty.
With Reddit’s encroaching IPO and their poorly planned API changes, we need a place to keep up with privacy topics that isn’t tied to an anti-privacy, centralized sinking ship site....
There seems to be some bugs with federation here and there… for example there are lots of interesting communities you can subscribe to, here are some of them: lemmy.one/communities/listing_type/All/page/1
These will all work and they would show up on your front page if you enabled your front page to work like that in your settings. However some are mastodon accounts and who knows what else, it’s not super clear.
You might want to check out !lemmy_support for asking questions, and !lemmy for reporting bugs and requesting features :)
Mods available to be added?
Not sure what you’re asking here? About creating communities (subreddit equivalent) and adding mods for them, see my comment here: lemmy.one/comment/536
You can collapse comments, it’s just not really intuitive, click this button:
Downvotes are disabled on this instance, because it is a very small community. If you see something against the rules, report it. If you see something you don’t like, go find something you do like and upvote that instead :)
I may consider changing this in the future.
If you have more questions about this instance, lemmy.one, generally, you can also ask at https://lemmy.one/c/meta.
Awesome dude, thank you. This was very helpful. I was curious if we could deploy mods and stuff into communities but perhaps I’ll spin up my own instance and give it a go to learn more about it.
Edit: By mods, I mean similar to some of the modificationss I deployed to old forums back in the day when I was an Admin. Guess it probably doesn’t work like that here.
I was referring more to the community. I remember most, if not all, of the listed instances being incredibly left wing. Not that I have a huge problem with that by itself, but I believe anyone should be able to get their opinions out there. Or, it could be that the userbase of Lemmy just happens to fall under those parameters.
Downvotes just don’t work inside communities hosted on lemmy.one. They might work on your own local midwest.social instance, I’m not sure, but if you downvoted my comment here nobody would be able to tell on lemmy.one, and nobody would be able to tell on other federated instances like lemmy.ml or beehaw.org, because lemmy.one simply would not federate that information to them.
I mentioned Lemmy on Mastodon and some people noted some controversy surrounding the “main” instances. I don’t know exactly what concerned people
One of, if not the most active lemmy instance is a Marxist, pro-Russian war, pro-CCP, pro-North Korea community. When I signed up on lemmy.ml a while back, it was almost all you saw.
The problem with reddit alternatives is that, until now, the only people leaving reddit were the ones kicked off. They needed new homes and they found them in unmoderated communities they could host themselves, like lemmy.
Some of us have been waiting for some time for more “average” redditors to make the move, so this exodus is like Christmas coming early.
So I realized that lemmygrad must be banned in beehaw’s instance list, but I can still see beehaw user comments in lemmy.ml communities, if I respond to them can they see my comment?
I disagree with the current CEO of Mastodon about his stance on mid-sized instances. We don't want to be run in isolation, we are part of the Fediverse. "Normal users just want the default", he can repeat that as many times as he wants, it doesn't make it true because of that.
Diversity is the DNA of the Fediverse and Mastodon is just one part of the whole. Thousands of people spend their time and money to make it successful. Anyone who dismisses that and single-handedly tries to market the Fediverse as a Mastodon brand and use "crowding out" techniques to prevent users from even being encouraged to choose an instance from a diversity will ultimately fail.
I am super disappointed with the direction Mastodon Corporation is taking. If there is not enough headwind here soon, then sooner or later it will lead to a schism.
A certain stage of development has ended - a prototype was created that allowed me to verify whether such a form makes sense in the #fediverse. Hi, good to see you here :) I honestly have no idea what the pronunciation is. It's a reference to the Linux /sbin, a container for things that are important to you. This is intentional, I want /kbin to be perceived as each individual instance. Each instance is different. Each community is different. That's what's cool about the Fediverse.

Would a "New Communities" page of some sort be helpful
