Every time I plug in my Quadcast S USB mic into my Arch Linux box, I can’t properly go into deep sleep. Unplugging it before attempting to sleep makes it work again, but its annoying to have to do that every time. How do I debug this and where do I even submit a bug report for this?...
You should remember that there's a lot of numbers between 0 and 1.4 billion - say, 100 million.
Why would they not pad their numbers if they cannot meaningfully be held accountable?
If padding with X users is projected to generate the most profit, then they are going to do just that.
The long near 0 interest rate made lending money so cheap. Once it started to rise it's easy to see how the tech sector has been overvalued. I think most people "knew" this but couldn't articulate it since the value of social networks was so high. I am hopeful we can see some of the businesses split up or burned.
Hopefully this will reduce the obsession with business and we can focus on helping people but I doubt it
When it comes to cutting expenses, government institutions are always very interested, so it makes sense to outsource all sorts of things.
On paper, sort of. Government IT projects are often seen as cash machines by private businesses where I’m from because there is often a generous budget and government institutions tend to want to use those budgets completely because if they don’t, some will start wondering if they really need that much budget or if it maybe can be shortened a bit… There have been notorious cases where there were huge projects that ended up being even more expensive than initially planned because the private contractors just milked it. And there is of course a lot of mutual masturbation between government institutions and big tech.
And government institutions tend to follow the private sector. The private sector has been pushing to the cloud for a long time now to the point where virtually nobody is suggesting or providing support for on-premise solutions. When every IT contractors says that moving everything to the google/microsoft cloud is the state of the art (and that there are 0 downsides to it and everything is 100% secure), most will not question it.
some countries have decided that all of mining industry, railways, electricity and water must be kept in government hands, no matter the cost. Same sort of things can happen with IT services once you burn your fingers badly enough.
Recently there has been somewhat of a push for open source solutions and big tech independent solutions for government institutions as they start to notice the downsides and potential security risks. And I mean it’s absolutely ridiculous, there are entire IT projects where entire systems and solutions were developed to provide a secure software solution for the military (costing hundreds of millions), but then they want to share those files with sharepoint online…

I know the topic of whether adblock is piracy is debated, but I am guessing there are a lot of adblock users here and I was wondering if anyone has seen the youtube adblock warning message in the wild. I use ublock origin and still haven’t seen it once.
Edit: downvoted with 0 counter-arguments. Classic.
Personally, I don’t see how YouTube can be abusive. It is their platform and they can do whatever they want with it. It is your choice if you use it or not. If you think the ads are out of control, you can pay for their subscription or use free services.
If content creators are uploading their videos there, it is because YouTube can pay them more than other platforms… Thanks to the ads. So it’s not like there aren’t other options out there, it’s just that YouTube pays content creators more. Free market.
You’re getting an endless amount of information backed by amazing engineers that designed a service that never goes down and loads 4K videos at incredible speeds worldwide for millions of users concurrently… At the price of a few minutes of your life per day. Seems fair. They are not denying you the access to the information. They are using that money to pay content creators fairly so they are incentiviced to create more content that you can enjoy.
YouTube is a high quality service. Why is it bad to give them something back for the high quality service you’re receiving? It’s not like this is a mediocre click bait article with 50 ads attacking your screen. Plus, you’re also giving back to the content creators. If you didn’t like the content, you can downvote them or report them to tweak the algorithm.
There’s some misinformation floating around regarding Lemmy not having a karma system. While many have discovered otherwise, this is for those who may not have....
Lemmy’s karma system is severely gimped because a user’s karma is different on each server. You can have a million upvotes on .ml and still end up with a karma score of 0 on .world. The only reliable way to detect karma is to query the user’s original server and that can easily be faked by an instance admin.
Kbin has a reputation score that’s actually visible in the frontend but it doesn’t split out post/comment score.
Went Ubuntu until they went stupid, then arch for a while but again, breakage.
Debian works, I have to spend 0 energy on it, and I can layer on different vms and lxc for whatever other distros I want.

Was freebsd because it was perfect and jails were next level shit but people keep putting out software that was obnoxious to install without docker, so debian as hypervisor/zfs and freebsd for most apps, debian for the obnoxious ones. Perfect system.
