Rightwingers are promoting aggressive anti-bikeism as a key element of the reactionary political identity. Just the most destructive people, reflexively raging against anything coded “left” or “woke.” And so even the most universally beneficial trends and behavior are declared evil and “Un-American” 1/

@JustinLachance @tzimmer_history if you’ve ever been rage-menaced by a driver for the crime of slowing them down, you know this logic. sadly happens to me even in a tiny town nearly every time I ride our Main Street. there is an entitlement to speed that Americans equate with Freedom and it cuts to their emotional-political core

I actually do think about this maybe once a day

“Researchers at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst found the training process for a single AI model can emit more than 626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. That's about the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as 62.6 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for a year.” https://www.cbsnews.com/news/artificial-intelligence-carbon-footprint-climate-change/

Nov 4, 1995, 28 years ago today, Israeli PM Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated at a peace rally, in a killing many in Israel still attribute to the radical rhetoric of Benjamin Netanyahu, who opposed the Oslo Accord peace agreements Rabin was celebrating the day he was murdered

for the fediverse to live up to its potential, you do have to report accts that violate rules. when you hit block you have the option of sending a report to the user’s admins, which is what it takes to remove abusive accts.

if someone is invoking systems of oppression in their posts or replies, it’s not just words, it’s harm that causes real stress, anxiety, ptsd etc, all of which are physically unhealthy and/or change a person’s ability to express themselves or seek and find community here

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

sometimes reporting a shit account is not enough and we have to get fierce and organize. this is not as fun as posting flowers and many of us may want to avoid centering abuse in our otherwise fun time online. but the Black Lives Matter etc in our profile doesn’t mean much if we aren’t willing to make even basic sacrifices to ensure our communities here are healthy, relaxing, and nourishing for marginalized people

I think what some of the Olde Mastodone types don’t get is that it’s not the fediverse on its face that challenges capitalist social media, it’s our ability to create and sustain communities here. Community, not software, is the opposite of capitalism.

if the platform (and people) allow abuse and harassment to flourish without visibility, we don’t have functional community, we’ve just once again failed to make intentional online spaces any better than our societies irl

In my garden it is WAY easier to grow spinach than basil. I usually grow basil in big pots so I can keep and eye on it but have masses of spinach out in the garden. So, when I make pesto, I find that cutting at least 50/50 with spinach makes the basil go much farther, you can barely tasted the spinach especially if you like your pesto garlicky and cheesy. I try to keep jars of it in the fridge to make quick pasta meals when it's hot and all else fails.

@mountainwitch since I’ve lived in alaska I’ve gotten way into pesto made from kale, chard, arugula etc. Turns out there are about a million cool recipes for different combos of greens and nuts and cheeses

There’s already backlash against on .

They’re not happy about it. The oxygen has just been sucked out of the room.

I understand where they’re coming from. They thought AT protocol was going to catapult over . And now Threads has chosen ActivityPub.

How things change in the space of three months.

@fediversenews

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@atomicpoet @fediversenews bluesky doesn’t care about which protocol wins, and also Facebook using activity pub isn’t widely seen as a win for our community here or our protocol. I’d like to see less superiority posting and more curiousity about what other platforms are getting right.like @ekana said, bluesky has quickly created feed features we really could use over here on mastodon.
