I think that is only users who comment/post. I don’t think it counts votes or logins. I know probably a majority of registered users aren’t active, but I think there are enough to at least keep things popular here at 0.
Is that why Edge, Facebook, AT&T, Bing, gmail, Tesla, and a hundered other examples are still around even though they are objectively bad products compared to competitors?
Or is it that multi-billion dollar companies subsidize them because they have near monopolies on the space through exploitation and shady business practices including being publically subsidized loss leaders until they got a stranglehold on the market?
The natural steady state of the “free market” is monopoly. Look at the computer hardware and tech world, and the internet. The closest we have had to a completely free market in a long time. There were practically 0 rules and regulations around them for dozens of years. What happened? Companies all bought each other until there are oligopolies or monopolies in each market, without exception.
I use “shutdown -s -f -t 0” it forces all apps to shutdown without windows asking you if you want to go back and save or if a program is not turning off.
This is generally an unpopular opinion, but…I don’t really think we need the news.
It’s basically like being told that a comet is going to smash into the Earth within the year and scientists are working on it, but their chance for success is anywhere between 0% and 100%. That’s cool and all, but I rarely feel like I can actively do anything as a result of being more informed. More information doesn’t empower me to do anything at all. Thus, I have a hard time justifying the self-flagellation.
Personally, I read the news only. While I barely pay attention to videos anyway, when I do I feel like I don’t have time to fact-check and otherwise do my due diligence. If I don’t have to read interpretative commentary, then I won’t. For example, if a news story cites a study or survey, I’ll just go to the source. If someone is quoted, I’ll go look for context around the quote.
That’s how I exert control, anyway lol. It’s mostly inconsequential, probably, but I also like to think that I’m not totally foolish.
Before Obama, I could still remain quiet when people said “voting for anyone is implicit approval,” or whatever - and for the most part, they’re right - voting is a pretty low level of change.
I voted for Obama because even if he is a bit of a tool, he’s black, and now a huge group of minority kids saw someone who looks like them in the white house. I voted for him not because of the “HOPE” on his signs but literally to give black kids hope. (And yeah, for the most part, it’s false hope, just like it is for white kids, welcome to the club.) He was a positive symbol and, if it’s a symbol who is also a centrist Democrat, that’s better then a centrist Democrat that isn’t a positive symbol. And a shit ton better than Mitt Romney or whoever the other guy was.
And then Trump happened, and any respect for the “don’t vote” viewpoint drained out. If you still think both parties are the same at this point, you might want to start asking yourself what else is going on with you - because “not great” is not identical to “fucking terrible”…
Biden isn’t doing what I want him to do - health care, income inequality, corruption in Congress, etc - but the infrastructure bill isn’t a bad thing. It’s actually a good thing, we need it. We need a lot more, but 1 > 0.
I really wanted Wayland to work for me. I just bought a new ASUS laptop (and ASUS has a great Linux compatibility track record, mind you!), 7th Gen Ryzen+Radeon, all AMD. I figured, let’s use Wayland on this one.
I installed KDE Neon, updated the kernel (some stuff is broken on the LTS kernel, no big deal, easy fix), switched to the Wayland session, everything was fine…until I opened any chromium-based app. Crashed kwin, killed the session completely, it recovered, but in a new session. Switched to X11, everything works. Maybe if I grabbed a newer mesa from a PPA it would work, but:
Crashing the window manager killing the session is awful and doesn’t happen in X11
Chromium shouldn’t crash the compositor at all
Even if it’s AMD’s new graphics drivers being buggy, that still shouldn’t kill the session!
And I know, technically KDE could (and afaik, is) implement session management so that doesn’t happen. But to my knowledge, literally 0 WMs/DEs can recover the session after a compositor crash currently, and that’s a big deal.
The cold, pretty much. Rather live in 0 deg. temperatures than deal with sweat, mosquitos, and people asking about swimming / go to the beach / sit out in the sun for no reason and get skin cancer.
The ponds and lakes freeze over for ice fishing or skating, the snow itself is often an activity (build stuff out of snow, eat the snow, throw the snow). The cold is refreshing and pleasant in the mornings and really helps to wake me up when I’m feeling sleepy. Perfect time to make soups, stews or breads. No BS about “it’s too hot to make this type of food, we should make hamburgers for the sixth day in a row”.
Pro tip: study how people of the past dressed. I’ve settled on tight-fitting wool underclothes, a fluffy mid-layer, and a simple ruana cloak ontop. This seems to keep me comfortable at least between 0°C and like -7°C
Dann meine letzten Fernverkehrsfahrten:
Klasse 47,90€ 813km (0,06€/km)
While I do not agree with your binary choice in the slightest, I did give it a test. 25 Might with rifle is no issue (not using Abstraction), Might with staff requires more than facerolling. 20+ WITH facerolling. Rifle gets smoother with Mirror Images, staff uses Mantra of Pain. Both use Mantra of Recovery for heal and clone generation. Rifle only uses one stack on recharge, staff spams the entire skill on cooldown.
I’d say that Rifle/Staff is probably going to be the support monster of choice. With staff you can trait Feedback for easy long-range rezzes and chill faceroll healspam, with rifle being your oh shit button for additional burst heal, ranged portal, extra CC. No focus then, but there’s always something.
Problem with rife is the spam of all skills on cooldown, that leaves very little room for a ranged portal or anything else. Also, much of rifle’s healing comes from 3, and that’s either boons OR burst heal.
Rifle has 0 damage potential, staff is condi. Rifle leaves two free utility slots, maybe three. Staff two. Maybe staff & mainhand/offhand. No ranged portal, but next to everything else. Even boon strip via Null Field or Disenchanter.
If one can live without focus, staff/rifle is probably the full package.
Edit: rifle has definitely more heal, I can withstand the ticks significantly longer. Staff has me die pretty fast. Having rifle either main heal or as a backup is what you want once your group takes 5k DPS damage because a timer has ran out or something.

I’ll still comment, and I might have a discussion with links, but I don’t think I’m going to post images anymore....
