bizzle, in 1TB OLED left touch pad has issues clicking down.

If you don’t care about taking it apart, you could adjust the spring on the back of the track pad. I totally dismantled my 512 GB OLED (for a housing swap that didn’t fit lmfao) and had to tune the spring a little bit on the right one when I put it back together.

I’d probably call it “intermediate” difficulty, but be careful and take pictures as you tear down to facilitate putting it back together.

That’s unfortunate! I haven’t heard about this nor luckily experienced it. Did you recalibrate first?

My immediate thought is of course, warranty, but it is the type of machine that you could theoretically open and try reseating the trackpad for. They did change the trackpad mechanism IIRC it is a separate piece connected by a ribbon.

I would suggest researching your issue and seeing if it is something that could be fixed by a teardown/rebuild and a recalibration - if someone else has done it then you may save yourself a week or two in shipping. However I also understand not wanting that hassle - even though I’m comfortable with that stuff I’d probably warranty it since it’s still new.

Sorry to hear about that! Good luck, though I’m sure the replacement process won’t be too bad. Still, sucks to have that issue and downtime :(

ColeSloth,

I haven’t thought to try recalibration, since it felt so mechanical, but I noticed under a game I was playing, it felt totally normal, which surprised the heck out of me, so it seems it may somehow be something that can be software adjusted. I’ll give it a shot.

As far as taking it apart, I’m more than comfortable doing that and it was going to be my plan before doing an rma and not having it for a couple weeks. I just came here to ask about it first because I was curious about if it was a common issue that’s cropped up.

Generally I add installers using "add non-steam app", then once they install successfully, remove it and instead add the executable that was created.

Proton can do it correctly just it's a PITA navigating the folders to make it work.

Lutris can work but some of it's scipts are outdated or not made with steamdeck in mind

I use the Steam Link app on my desktop to use keyboard + mouse on the Deck. For content from Epic, GOG, and Amazon I find Heroic Launcher to be the easiest since it’s a native Linux app and has a simple “add to Steam” button. For emulation, I use Emudeck, for everything else I use Bottles or Lutris.

What I do is usually:

  • Install the game on my desktop PC.
  • Copy the files over to the Steam Deck via sftp
  • Use Desktop Mode to add it as a non-Steam game to the Steam Library
  • If it’s a Windows game, force Proton in the game’s properties in Steam
  • Use SteamGridDB (and sgdboop) to set a nice image for it.

I’d say it’s a mixed bag. The screen is great and battery life is better.

But I have serious problems with wifi just not working. I have to use a hub that has physical ethernet. Many USB-C devices have problems too. Seems like the connector is unable to provide power. It can only receive it.

I’m on the SteamOS beta train in the desperate hopes of getting a fix for these problems quickly but without the added problems of the preview builds.

Step one, delete GOG and Epic

Telorand,

Why?

firecat,

He is a loyalist to Valve corporate and will defend the billion dollar company. Do not become such person or hate on websites that offer free games.

Telorand,

I mean, I understand that some people don’t like Epic or their hostility towards Linux, but with patience, you can build a pretty large library of freebies without giving them a penny.

lupec, in What is general practice for installing games from outside Steam?

I just use Lutris for everything since it integrates with all the storefronts I care about, but as others have brought up Heroic is also a good option. I’d say try a handful of games on each and see which you prefer.

Diurnambule, in What is general practice for installing games from outside Steam?

Heroic for epic games. For others games I run the installers from lutris and add games and run them directly in stram

Lipriv30,

I have gog set up and go in gog to install and play games. Is there a better way than that?

Diurnambule,

Yeah but it require to have money to buy games.

rgalex, in What is general practice for installing games from outside Steam?
@rgalex@lemmy.world avatar

Heroic is a client for GOG and Epic Launcher, so if I install a game from there, I use Heroic.

Lutris is more generic, and has specific script installers per game, so I use Lutris as a fallback if the game is from somewhere else, or the game does not correctly work with Heroic.

Then, as a third fallback, I try to install the game with Wine directly, then add it a shortcut on Steam to benefit from Proton through Steam. In the above cases (Heroic and Lutris), they would be using their own packaged version of Wine/Proton, so it’s worth to try it before giving up.

Cralder,

I would recommend using bottles as the last fallback instead of just wine. Makes it easier since it automatically creates a wine prefix for each game/launcher

Diurnambule,

Same method but I run wine in lutris. I would add to use the steam id of the games as name in steam to get steamdeck controler config related to the game and to look into the the plugin “steamgriddb” to add images and logo to imported games

Heroic for GOG and Epic. No idea about Ubisoft.

Nilz, in What is general practice for installing games from outside Steam?

I use Heroic if the game is from GoG or Epic and Lutris for the rest. I wouldn’t bother with using just Wine since it’s a lot easier to configure compatibility settings for each individual game with Heroic and Lutris. Both can use the same compatibility layers anyway.

mrfriki, in [Discussion] People who upgraded from a LCD Deck to an OLED Deck, was it worth it?

The screen is way better particularly the 90hz upgrade, playing at 90 FPS is so much smoother than 60, since I mostly play indies and old games on the deck I hit that frame rate all the time. Also I used to love my Vita and Switch because of the Oled screen. I now can play my Vita and Switch games on a 7+ inches oled display with proper controls, plus all my pc games. The brightness increases makes playing games on the couch on plain day light feasible, previously I had to turn the blinds in order to properly enjoy a game. That’s no longer the case.

The battery upgrade is very nice, specially for more demanding games . I usually only play lighter games on a handheld as opposed to AAA and rarely play more than 2-3 hours per session so the battery has always been fine for me, however when playing games like Resident Evil the battery lasted about 2 hours, now it last 3.5 hours, enough for a full gaming session. Games like Hardcore mecha get over 10 hours which mean i could take the Deck on a Weekend trip and forget about charging it.

The sticks feel way better too, not as good as the PS4 controller, the middle part is still a little slippery but close enough.

All that said the games you will play are as as much fun in the Oled model than in the regular one. I sold my LCD Deck so the upgrade have been relatively cheap but if you have to buy a new one and find a sweet deal on an LCD model don’t hesitate, to will be able to upgrade to the Deck 2 in 18-24 months.

I got my original about a year after orders opened up and loved it. But I never realized the differences between the small versions of the deck. Mine was ordered on the day of release so the OLED version has nicer, more tactile buttons than the OG one. THe extra battery and bigger better screen is a huge plus as well. I love it. And I will with out a doubt order a next gen one as well.

minishoemaze, in [Discussion] People who upgraded from a LCD Deck to an OLED Deck, was it worth it?
@minishoemaze@beehaw.org avatar

If I hadn’t resold my original deck (to a friend, gave him a good price) an upgrade probably wouldn’t have been worth it for me personally. Although I’ve been using mine in handheld more often these days, OLED doesn’t do a ton for me and I don’t notice the weight difference some people have mentioned. However! The battery life is better, I feel like the touchpads haptics seem more prominent(?), and bluetooth-to-wake is a wonderful feature (highly recommend an extra dualsense if you’re a docked user).
