misterundercoat, in [Wristwatches] How a $260 plastic watch pissed off the entire watch community

Me, who likes buying dirt cheap vintage watches:

Where do you buy them if you don’t mind sharing?

misterundercoat,

Ebay. I just have a saved search for “watch” and look for something interesting. The best deals are from estate sales where the seller isn’t an expert and just posts pictures and lists the item “as-is”. Of course you’re taking a risk, but a good percentage of time you get something nice that has just been collecting dust on a shelf or in a drawer somewhere.

Fair enough. I live in Japan and there’s a massive second hand market for mostly Japanese watches (most of which are Seikos lol). Nobody uses eBay here, it’s Mercari, and only knowledgeable people sell stuff. It’s still definitely cheap, but not ‘I have no idea what this is actually worth’ cheap.

Ah, I missed these. Thanks for reposting, it was a fun read. Odd that Swatch Group still doesn't sell the MoonSwatch online, given it's supposed to be the affordable version ($260 USD) of the Speedy. Maybe they like the hype, but you'd think they prefer money.

They maybe wouldn’t sell as well if they were readily available, and OP did mention the sales of the pricier ones went up as well.

I'm always amazed how much people are willing to shell on a game, it makes me less embarrassed about my ample collection of unplayed games in steam and gog.

Thank you for providing this content. I miss the r/hobbydrama community more than any of the others.

non_expert, in [TV] A Homophobic Gay Legend Comes to an End, or how the Supernatural Finale Made Game of Thrones Look Good

This must be some alternate time-line bullshit, Supernatural ended after five seasons like God intended and everything else is some kind of weird decade-long shared hallucination.

I’ll start us off!

In the MUDding world, specifically the Iron Realms brand of MUD, two games (Imperian, Starmourn) have been put into “legacy mode” by the company, which means that a lot of the more useful, grabby, and/or addictive features typically found in IRE games will be unsupported going forward, as well as disabling the ability for characters to retire INTO Starmourn or Imperian, while retiring OUT of them is still doable. Everyone’s expecting mass exodus. Vitally, entering legacy mode means that the administration of these games will no longer be paid by IRE, so if they intend to stay and keep the games going they’ll be doing so out of the goodness of their hearts - it can’t be their job anymore, so their time will by necessity be focused elsewhere, at least a fair amount of the time.

Starmourn’s population in particular is panicky, as it’s very new in comparison to other IRE games and has a dedicated playerbase. Among other things like the literal end of the world looming on the Starmourn horizon, rumors abound that entering legacy mode will mean Starmourn, which already has a problem with over-indulgence in PK, to become fully “open PK,” because if the administration isn’t present then there will be no one to enforce the rules. The administration has countered this claim, but the panic continues.

Meanwhile, on more popular IRE games with ostensibly less tOxIc playerbases, people are dreading an influx of undesirables from Imperian. I guess people don’t like those guys.

This is a weird hobby.

Thebazilly, in [Cross Stitch] A not-so-heavenly design - or, what happens when you ignore customer feedback for two years

Fiber arts drama is always so good. My favorite is all the copywrong arguments about free patterns.

majere, in [Lolita Fashion] How to mistake a $1500 dress for a $150 dress and lose all credibility in the process

I would never stumble on something like this on Reddit. An overall mundane story, but I still enjoyed reading it. Crazy such a culture exists and is widespread!

yo_accountant, in [Video Games] That Time EA Accidentally Implemented Sexual Assault as a Gameplay Feature in the Sims 4

Amazing write up!

pavlov, in [Chess] Go shove it up your ass: the story of Hans Niemann's (alleged) vibrating anal beads, and the biggest scandal in chess history

That ridiculous defamation lawsuit was officially dismissed a month ago. Pretty hilarious to admit to cheating in the past, then try to get money from people speculating that maybe he hasn’t changed his ways

dpkonofa, in [Chess] Go shove it up your ass: the story of Hans Niemann's (alleged) vibrating anal beads, and the biggest scandal in chess history

I was fascinated by this when it was first happening and then got caught up in some things and forgot about it. Sad to see that they never really figured out if he was OTB cheating or not because I would have been interested in the method.

Candelestine, in [Comic books] That time Wonder Woman became a BDSM dictator and ruled the world, ending an entire series of comics

That was great.

And tbf, of all the chars in media, imo WW makes one of the absolute best fascist dictators. She’s got that perfect blend of nobility, arrogance and actual power that just screams do as I say or I’ll cut your fucking head off. Not actually doing that is part of what makes the character kinda engaging. Much like how Supes walks around in a world of cardboard. Unless Snyder has ahold of him anyway. Then he plows through a world of cardboard.

Why can’t users make new posts or cuss in this community??
