Hashtags were fundamental to how I used Twitter. They helped not only with discoverability but also classification, organization, and community building. offers none of this. tries to make up for the lack of tags with feeds, but these don't help with topics that emerge on the fly. Only Mastodon offers , but for them to work, more people need to enable the option now has to make one's posts visible to search from across the fediverse. @histodons

Here is a new thread for friends of , , and the community.
@histodons

On the painting with the title "The Alchemist" from the Flemish Mattheus van Helmont, circa mid seventeenth century, are many uses and abuses of paper products reflected in the details. I will address 7 of these paper issues in the thread. Bonus for friends: a large écorché figure, a distillation apparatus over a fire, and metal working assistants.
Enjoy.

Excellent critique of the politics of the #Oppenheimer film by esteemed historian Tsuyoshi Hasegawa.

Two key takeaways:

-the film makes the production and use of the weapons seem "inevitable"

-it reinforces the illusion that the nuclear attacks "ended the war" (Hasegawa's work on this elsewhere is definitive)

The article is far more detailed that this and worth a read:

@lutzray @bojacobs @histodons where they detail the reasons why the US actually thinks it can carry out a nuclear strike on Russia without fear of retaliation: The US THINKS it has sufficiently weakened Russia's ability to respond!
That's the dangerous situation we are in - American hubris !!

in - Annie Besant (nee Wood) was born in 1847. Annie was born in London, and married at age 20, but the marriage fell apart in a few years. She separated from her husband and began to write - she was an ardent supporter of worker's and women's rights, even publishing a book on contraception (for which she was put on trial and custody of her daughter was given to her ex-husband). She advocated for Irish and Indian Home Rule and independence.

On Nov. 27, 1978, the late Dianne Feinstein, then the 45-year-old president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and two-time failed mayoral candidate called a press conference to announce her retirement.

That afternoon, a supervisor shot Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey White.

Feinstein handled the moment with poise, and went on to serve 9 years as mayor and 3 decades in the U.S. Senate.

in - in 1810, Elizabeth Gaskell (nee Stevenson) was born. Elizabeth was born in London to a well-to-do family. After her mother's death, she lived with her aunt in the countryside. There, she received a good education and after her marriage began to publish novels (all have been adapted by the BBC). She explored the lives of working class people in Manchester, and in her lifetime was lauded as the greatest English novelist since Jane Austen.

Spot the difference: on the left, the copperplate print is hand-coloured after the print run, and on the right no extra work is done. Colouring prints was a thing in Europe. Guess which version was more expensive - and sold better?

You see the frontispieces with a star map from the 1742 "Atlas Novus Coelestis", Nuremberg, from J.G. Doppelmayr (1677-1750). Bonus details: , , and discussing things.

@dbellingradt @histodons
Even some early movie films were hand coloured. All those tiny frames!
Though there was RGB colour film at the end of the Victorian age an exposure was 20 minutes. It wasn't till there was CYM layered film that colour movies were possible.
I think before 1742 China was doing coloured prints using multiple wood blocks.
Nitric acid was 14th C, or maybe 10th C. But using it for silver nitrate photos was 19th C.
