fury, in Firefox 121.0 released

I was going to make some smart ass comment about browser version numbers being ridiculous anymore (after Firefox 3.6 I stopped keeping track), but then I saw it

touchpad & touchscreen gestures, swipe-to-nav

Hot diggity damn. This might make me less likely to revert to Chromium every new install, if Firefox works well with touchscreen at last. I’ll have to check this out on my Pi 5 on Ubuntu.

Bronco1676,

Have been using these features on waylane for a while, works like a charm

Do you have a link to the bug?

I’m waiting for Japanese-to-English translation tbh. I know it’ll take time, but it’s worth shouting it into the ether.

Oh yeah btw, here's the Firefox Picture-in-Picture tutorial for KDE Wayland, so you don't have to click Reddit:I’m not 100% sure if this is everyone’s experience, but when running Firefox with Wayland (not as an xwayland window), Picture-in-Picture windows don’t stay above by default. If you are similarly afflicted, the workaround is literally ten clicks away (assuming you have a scroll wheel) using Window Rules. You could create and fill the rule manually, but now that I’ve mentioned the ten clicks thing I’m committed to only using clicks in this quick how-to. Step 1: Right click an open Picture-in-Picture window. In the context menu, select “More Actions” -> “Configure Special Window Settings…”. This will populate most of the window settings for you. Step 2: Click “Add Property…” and select “Window title”. The newly added row’s text field should read “Picture-in-Picture”. Change the dropdown option from “Unimportant” to “Exact Match”. (All PiP windows in Firefox use this title and by making it Exact Match the rule shouldn’t affect any other Firefox windows.) Step 3: Click “Add Property…” again and this time select “Keep above other windows”. The dropdown in the newly added row should be set to “Apply Initially”. Select the “Yes” radio button if it isn’t already. Step 4: Click “OK”. That’s it. No more manually setting Keep Above every time you open a PiP.

Not a very big change

juli,

Wayland default is big

Av1 is big

rockSlayer, (edited )

That is pretty big, actually. I’m still a novice Linux user, are there distros that ship with wayland?

ETA: looked it up myself, I think I need to upgrade my debian version. Apparently the default DE ships with it now, even in stable

rizoid,
@rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Its becoming more common and most desktops are beginning the long process of switching to Wayland as the default. I use gnome Wayland on opensuse tumbleweed but I don’t remember, or think, it was default.

NuXCOM_90Percent,

Yeah. And keep in mind that a lot of the “nvidia issues” are a mix of outdated information and just the general tribalism over ideological differences a lot of (generally newbie…) linux evangelists have against nvidia. It is far from perfect, but it honestly feels no different than any other linux experience: Some stuff is going to just not work and you’ll either spend way too long debugging it or learn to not care. Which… is not dissimilar from windows or mac.

The main gotchas I’ve found is that some applications and games with native versions may depend on x11 specific features. Starsector is a notable example where the easiest solution is to run the launcher once in an x11 desktop and then never care again.

Audacity9961,

I’m sorry, but your assertion that those who are upset with nvidia are mostly “newbs” is nonsense.

Plenty of more experienced users despise nvidia as well, and they have done immense damage to the Linux desktop.

In fact I would argue the opposite, given the proliferation of distros focused on new users which specialise in making nvidia drivers easily accessible for these users.

Bronco1676,
Audacity9961,

Always a classic

const_void,

Most distros will make it the default next year if they haven't already. X is dead.

deweydecibel,

Actually I think they’re just renaming it to “Twitter”

Audacity9961, (edited )

Fedora, Red Hat and Ubuntu are Wayland by default, as are Debian and openSUSE Tumbleweed/Leap Gnome.

skeezix,

I add the Utani add on

TrivialBetaState, in How to disable firefox relay?

Ctrl+Shift+A will get you to Add-ons and Themes. Click on Extensions, if it is not already chosen. Among your extensions you should see relay. Click the switch to the right to turn it off or the three dots to remove it completely.

juli,

It’s not installed, but thx. I already solved it in another comment

steakmeout, in How to disable firefox relay?

What does Firefox relay have to do with saving passwords?

juli,

It suggests using a relay email when logging into a service.

it’s an extension, right? i would assume it would go away if you uncheck this option in Firefox settings: https://hexbear.net/pictrs/image/92a756a9-aef4-4276-96c8-5ec4a6b05bb8.png

i’ve had this unchecked so i haven’t seen it pop up in my use

juli,

Unfortunately, lemmy didn’t upload the picture with the post. It’s not that setting, it replaced proton pass’ popup

Apparently, when the box is not ticked, it doesn’t mean that everything within the box is unticked and disabled. When the box is not ticked, you just can’t switch their state anymore.

Bug or on purpose?

Anyway, you have to enable asking, then unticking the relay box and then you can disable asking again.

Vincent,

I'm fairly sure that that's unintentional behaviour. I reported it here, but if you have additional info to share there (e.g. your browser version), that would be fantastic: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1870820

juli,

Wow! Thqnj you!

Unfortunately I am away from keyboard til Winter solstice. It’s the latest flatpak, i.e. 120 . 121 j usda t got released, that’s unlikely it.

Nithanim, in hide firefox badge of webapps

OT but beware that nova launcher was sold to some “ad” company. I switched to neo launcher since.

juli,

Thx! I know.

I’m almost FOSS only. I allow some treats until linux gets ready.

Thx for the reminder. I’ll check it out again - i already used it for a year or so. Maybe it’s time again :)

juli, (edited )

Oh shit. I remember that the dev didn’t want to have “go to first homescreen, if at the end” for an unknown reason.

No immersive (full screen) folders.

Keyboard doesn’t automatically open for app overview. I have to move my finger aaaaall the way up it’s called “global search” in gestures

Let’s hope all the bugs are gone 😁

juli,

You can’t hide the badge in neo.

DangerousInternet, in Help needed: can't install new Android extensions
@DangerousInternet@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, you supposed to install only recommended. Try switching to desktop and reload page with unsupported extension until download button becomes install… It happens to work.

MrOtherGuy,

This isn’t true anymore. Any extensions that are explictly marked as Android compatible (by the author) should now be installable from AMO. I’m pretty sure that the extension needs to use manifest v3 to be able to be Android compatible, but as long as that is true and the author has set the Android compatibility flag, you should be able to add it normally.

Installing from AMO seems to work fine for me - although I’m using Nightly variant, which certainly could behave differently. However, Firefox 120 is supposed to work the same I believe.

DangerousInternet,
@DangerousInternet@lemmy.world avatar

You may check this addons.mozilla.org/en-US/…/censor-tracker/ and see yourself. It is not compatible with Android Firefox, Install button is not active. However it could be installed with custom collection… But we go easy way and switch mobile view to desktop view… Well yeah, the button Install is active now and extension could be installed. It won’t work as expected, proxy support sucks in Firefox.

Mv3 is not needed either, uBlock Origin is mv2 extension.

MrOtherGuy,

Huh. I dunno what the actual requirements for Android compatibility are then. Anyhow, being recommended or in a custom collection isn’t strictly a requirement anymore.

DangerousInternet,
@DangerousInternet@lemmy.world avatar

Yes no need for custom collection, but installing unsupported extensions from desktop view seems to be a bug, which they could fix anytime.

MrOtherGuy,

Yeah, that indeed sounds like a bug.

Midnight, in Can I make a saved webpage show push notificafions on an Android phone?

No. This is basically why you use native apps. What you could do is set up another profile on Android and you should be able to sign in on a different account for that profile and get notifications.

abobla,

got it, thank you very much

averyminya, in what are great webapps that you can use with firefox?

Is this the “install” option from the settings drop down in Firefox Mobile? I accidentally pressed the button for Kbin the other day, didn’t go through with it but it was interesting.

I haven’t used these since… Man, the iPod 3G?

Personally, my Internet usage these days is mostly just the fediverse and what I find through them. I’d be interested if there were any particularly good ones though.

I guess it could be useful for game information websites, but I’d want to avoid the awful conglomerate one for that, and I tend to just use the information as a text search and it pops up. I feel like if I’m directly on the site I never find what I need as quickly, so maybe not.

Maybe some of the music websites I’ve come across would be good.

juli, in Questions about LibreWolf

Just check it out. Having both installed is ok.

Librewolf is just firefox with arkenfox. Read arkenfox and you’ll know what you get.

DangerousInternet, in Questions about LibreWolf
@DangerousInternet@lemmy.world avatar

Yes it is same Firefox, but hardened, everything will be same. By default Firefox Account is turned off for privacy, if you need Sync than it won’t make much sense using LibreWolf instead of Firefox.

juli,

Huh? Of course it makes sense to use librewolf with sync. Isync is e2e, nothing to fear.

sugar_in_your_tea,

And I think you can still host it yourself if you want.

juli,

Yes, but there’s little reason to do so

sugar_in_your_tea,

Yup, which is why I’m not sure if it’s still a thing. But it’s an option if you want complete control.

DangerousInternet, (edited )
@DangerousInternet@lemmy.world avatar

There is a reason why LibreWolf turns it off. Have you ever read Mozilla Account privacy policy? It is a spy tool, lol. People want more privacy and security with LibreWolf, but immediately go about:config, what a joke. I am not paranoid, I use sync and betterfox.js is just fine for me, even do some softening.
