littlebluespark, in Pinky-white leucistic alligator with blue eyes born in Florida is 1 of only 8 in the world

We’re promoting inbreeding now? How apropos.

EatYouWell,

Leucistic animals happen naturally all the time. The reason there are so few is because they get eaten pretty quickly.

Although the mutation can be intentionally bred for, it likely isn’t what happened here. It’s a gator farm, and if you mass produce any animal you’re going to eventually see interesting color variations pop up.

littlebluespark,

You claim that inbreeding “isn’t likely” and then immediately follow with a sentence that directly refutes that. FFS. Is this all bots?!

EatYouWell,

How did my sentence directly refute it? Generally people who raise animals for food intentionally introduce genetic variety to avoid genetic issues.

MossyFeathers,

I dunno about you, but I want more pinkish-white gators. Perfect valentine’s day gift for your Floridian girl/boyfriend. Because they’re pink and they’re white, they make great wedding gifts too!

EatYouWell, in Pinky-white leucistic alligator with blue eyes born in Florida is 1 of only 8 in the world

I’m pretty sure leucistic animals don’t survive infancy because of predators, not health conditions.

It’s my understanding that leucisism doesn’t typically cause health issues.

BellaDonna, in Decreasing biodiversity may promote spread of viruses

Not just may, does. It’s less species to hop to, but smaller genetic pools mean that within a species it’s more likely to spread with less immune response, or has less to mutate against.

This must be a devil bird! No God would create something that isn’t either a male or female! No in betweens! /s

captainlezbian,

We need to make a law forcing it to be one or the other. The way it is now is unnatural and confusing! /s

Cap,

Exactly! Next thing you know someone is gonna say it’s sexuality is fluid. Think of the children!

Is it hermaphroditic or is it just the plumage colors are usually one color for males another for female and this bird has both colors?

What’s in the bird’s pants?

flambonkscious,

The article mentions double fertilisation, so I guess it’s hermaphroditic?

tegs_terry,

It probably has a cloaca, so externally nothing

Aqarius,

If it’s like the chicken I read about previously, it’s literally half one, half the other, as if you split two birds in half lengthwise and mixed up the pairing when you put them back together.

HowManyNimons,

DOES IT HAVE A PECKER?

Excerpt:

Professor Spencer says gynandromorphs – animals with both male and female characteristics in a species that usually have separate sexes – are important for our understanding of sex determination and sexual behaviour in birds.

The main groups in which the phenomenon has been recorded include animal species which feature strong sexual dimorphism; most often insects, especially butterflies, crustaceans, spiders, even lizards and rodents.

“This particular example of bilateral gynandromorphy – male one side and female the other – shows that, as in several other species, either side of the bird can be male or female.

“The phenomenon arises from an error during female cell division to produce an egg, followed by double-fertilization by two sperm,” he explains.

Probably a shitty combo of the daiichi discharge with climate change warming waters and fucking up marine ecosystems. In a healthier ecosystem the fishery mightve been more resilient but having both happen probably means the animals and plants that live there can’t handle perturbations and any small change in pollution anymore.

tiredofsametab,

Some dilute tritium dumped in another portion of the ocean is not going to do this.
