hh93, in Found the best weapon in the game!

I’d say it’s pretty much impossible that something like this happens as result of a bug

Anafroj,

Actually, for once, it’s a quite good implementation of the 5e ruleset. :)

In the Player Handbook (p.147) :

Improvised Weapons

Sometimes characters don’t have their weapons and have to attack with whatever is at hand. An improvised weapon includes any object you can wield in one or two hands, such as broken glass, a table leg, a frying pan, a wagon wheel, or a dead goblin.

Often, an improvised weapon is similar to an actual weapon and can be treated as such. For example, a table leg is akin to a club. At the DM’s option, a character proficient with a weapon can use a similar object as if it were that weapon and use his or her proficiency bonus.

An object that bears no resemblance to a weapon deals 1d4 damage (the DM assigns a damage type appropriate to the object). If a character uses a ranged weapon to make a melee attack, or throws a melee weapon that does not have the thrown property, it also deals 1d4 damage. An improvised thrown weapon has a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Improvised Weapon is also an ability in the game you can use at any time. If you’re strong enough, you can even use gnomes and goblins as weapons! I killed a skeleton by throwing a rat at it in one of the later dungeons.

My monk is just Jackie Channing his way through combat. Punching, kicking, throwing chairs, swinging tables… I walk into a room and I look at every object in it and devise a way to utilize everything in battle. It’s awesome. 😃

Wait, you’re done already with creating a character ?

DontMakeMoreBabies, in Baldur's Gate 3 is defying game industry trend-chasers — and is being rewarded for doing so

I've played BG1, BG2, and a shit ton of NWN. I am an hour or two into BG3 and I'm happy so far.

Feels somewhat like 'Divinity OS does DND' but I enjoyed the system before and it seems to fit well enough to the setting.

Kikkertje,

I remember when all these games were just coming out and the hype surrounding them. My favourite was always Minsc and his hamster companion Boo from BG1.

Rheios,
@Rheios@ttrpg.network avatar

I adore Minsc but feel like WoTC has started flooding him into stuff once they realized that he was popular. He’s in a comic, in Magic the gathering now, and I think even showed up in modules and games. Their involvement in any of this has made me trepidatious, tbh. It sounds like Larian may have made a good game despite them. (I have my own nitpicks there but I’m a very inflexible and nostalgic person, so that’s to be expected.)

Poggervania, in Baldur’s Gate 3 Reignites Age-Old Save Scumming Debate - IGN
@Poggervania@kbin.social avatar

Bigger question is who gives a crap?

It’s a single-player game, let people enjoy things the way they want to. I personally don’t save-scum the skill and ability checks, but I will save-scum on a tough fight if I’m in a losing position - and I ain’t gonna knock on people who do and don’t do that in a single-player game.

For multi-player, I would discourage it since dealing with your friend’s fuckups is like, half the fun of a tabletop session.

Volkditty, in I was kinda hoping it'd take Baldur's Gate 3 longer to ruin my life

I have fallen into the same trap that I always do with this type of game, and which I begged myself not to this time, to no avail: Roll a character, be having a good time. Suddenly think, "I wonder if there's another way to solve this area if my character were any good at stealth..." Roll another character, replay the same 8-10 hours of the game. Think to myself, "that was interesting, but how would that play out if I took the bad guy path? Or if I was a magic user? Or if I had a mustache?" Replay the same 8-10 hours of the game, ad nauseam.

And this is even after the 100 hrs I sank in Early Access.

rafadavidc, in I was kinda hoping it'd take Baldur's Gate 3 longer to ruin my life

I haven’t been this excited to have a game ruin my life since I took 11/11/11 off of work. Unbelievable that that was A DOZEN years ago, jesus.

sunbunman, in [SPOILER] How did you handle the fight at the end of Act 1?

Oldmandan, in Is the game really intended to be this much of a "try-it-until-you-get-it" luck-based RPG?
@Oldmandan@lemmy.ca avatar

/shurg Can’t say I’ve found it this way, but I’m pretty used both to DnD mechanics generally, and Larian’s approach to encounter design in specific. (I’ve so far had exactly one combat game over, because I was dumb and let Ragzlin get into the rafters and chuck javelins at me for like 20 damage a pop.)

Positioning matters, your environment is something to be used to your advantage, abilities that boost your accuracy are very powerful, and different enemies have different strengths and weaknesses. /shurg Hard to give much specific advice, because different encounters and party compositions demand different tactics and threat assessment.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I’m not a huge fan of D&D 5E, and I think the Divinity combat mechanics foundation lent itself better to both this kind of game and to Larians encounter design (which is natural since they invented the Divinity mechanics).

In general I felt like I had more and better tools in D:OS2, with more interactions and synergies and in general more fun in combat.

Still, I like everything else better in BG3, and it’s not like the combat is awful. And it might improve on higher levels.

Hairyblue, in I broke Baldur's Gate 3 by playing as a party of bears
@Hairyblue@kbin.social avatar

The article has spoilers for act 1.

They may should patch summons. I had Wyll summon a imp like creature and didn't notice it got left behind at an elevator. I entered a fight in a temple far away and then realized the imp wasn't with me. I selected him and tried to get him to the fight, but the summon couldn't open doors.

HumbertTetere,

I am also a bit annoyed by that.

There’s a door in Grimforge with a fire effect preventing approach. But there’s a lever inside to open it. I had Wyll with an imp at hand and found out the imp cannot move the lever. Had to expend a Fly spell, which worked out.

Oldmandan, in There isn't a hidden time limit, is there?
@Oldmandan@lemmy.ca avatar

Some specific quests have time limits (long rest based ones) but those that do are pretty explicit about it and make a point of warning you before you can unintentionally progress them.

Skyhighatrist,

I didn’t get any warning when I missed out on a quest in the Underdark. At least no warning that I recall receiving. It wasn’t big deal, just means that my next playthrough will be different.

Oldmandan,
@Oldmandan@lemmy.ca avatar

Was that the

spoilerNere/save the gnomes quest in Grymforge?

I got a warning before I rested (right when I went to camp) that I was going to fail that one (psychic call for help, that they were about to die), I did rest specifically in that area of the underdark though, the scene might not trigger elsewhere? IDK.

Skyhighatrist,

Yes, it was that. I didn’t notice getting such a warning, but it’s definitely possible I did and just didn’t pay attention.

Thebazilly,

If you fast travel too far away the quest also auto-fails with no warning.

Skyhighatrist,

Ah, it’s quite possible that is actually what happened as I had fast traveled back to the Myconian village, and did a few other things before returning.

Hairyblue, in There isn't a hidden time limit, is there?
@Hairyblue@kbin.social avatar

I read in a review that there is talk all the time about getting cured of your problem quickly, there really is no time limit and you can enjoy and explore the game until you finally get a cure.

I've played through Fallout 1 and 2 dozens of times.

I have yet to finish Fallout 4 or Fallout: New Vegas.

The sea change from "actual RPGs" to "shooters with occasional minor choices to make" enrages me.

Agrivar,

I don’t blame you for avoiding Fallout 3 or 4… but you owe it to yourself to at least give New Vegas a chance! It’s just a much better game.

VoxAdActa,
@VoxAdActa@kbin.social avatar

I've tried New Vegas three or four times. By the time I actually get to New Vegas and meet Mr. House, I'm overwhelmed by the number of things I'm supposed to be doing and dead dog tired of those fucking OP Legion assassins that show up to ruin my day every fifteen minutes.

Part of that is probably on me, because I'm the guy who wants to experience the whole game in a single play-through, and I try not to take on too many new quests until I've finished the ones I've already got. I've also been recently informed that if I rush to New Vegas and do Mr. House's quest, the Legion assassins will back off for a bit, which is a big deal because my god I'm sick of them. I never would have tried that on my own, as there's nothing in the game to give me a clue that they're connected, but maybe I'll give it another shot and do that.

sanpedropeddler,

Legion assassins are after you because you have a bad reputation with the legion. Just don’t do anything they will hate you for, and you’re fine. You can also wear their armor as a disguise.

I never would have tried that on my own, as there’s nothing in the game to give me a clue that they’re connected

It has to do with a plot point that you wouldn’t know about yet, its not supposed to just be a break from the legion assassins.

VoxAdActa,
@VoxAdActa@kbin.social avatar

Legion assassins are after you because you have a bad reputation with the legion.

Oh.

Well shit.

So maybe I shouldn't go to Nipton and toss a grenade at the Legionaries as they're walking away after their leader finished shit-talking me.

They just explode in such an easy, satisfying way! How do they even know it was me? All the witnesses are unrecognizable flesh chunks!

Ok, maybe I will load up another try.

sanpedropeddler,

So maybe I shouldn’t go to Nipton and toss a grenade at the Legionaries as they’re walking away after their leader finished shit-talking me.

Probably not, but you can kill the leader later once you’re better equipped to take on assassins. He’s one of my least favorite characters so I always kill him unless I’m specifically trying to help the legion.

DonnieDarkmode, in What is the theory behind locking multiclass to the highest difficulty?

I have the option to multiclass playing on “normal”. Is it confirmed that they don’t permit it on the “story” difficulty? I ask because the level-up screen could be tweaked a bit in my opinion; it’s not super obvious what you need to click on

LegendofDragoon,
@LegendofDragoon@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, it expressly says that it can't be used in this difficulty, but maybe I'll move up to normal for subsequent playthroughs to have it as an option

DonnieDarkmode,

Ah gotcha. I’d be interested to hear why they made that choice. On the bright side, there’s already a mod to unlock multiclassing for story . I can’t speak to ease of installation or possible issues obviously, but if you’re comfortable using Vortex (the mod manager from Nexus Mods) it should be pretty straightforward
