Crankpork,

I’d like a digital personal assistant actually designed to help me keep track of my day to day stuff, rather than one designed to steal and sell all my information.

StenSaksTapir,

And it would have a great collaboration, but also a friendly rivalry, going with my robot butler.

hexagonwin,

Maybe a Palm Pilot would do :p

Inductor,

A small, cheap holographic projector (as in projects a glowing volumetric image into the air that I can wave my hand through). It would probably work using femtosecond lasers, but making the optics small and cheap would be difficult.

MartinXYZ, (edited )

I just want an affordable 10" color e-ink ebook reader, that has natural colors, so it is good enough to read modern comics on.

Edit: I forgot to mention “affordable”

arthur,

That would be awesome.

DoctaaMonstaa,

Pretty sure this exists from a company called bigme. Might be hard to get in the US though.

MartinXYZ,

I’m not in the US so perhaps it’s an option for me?

MartinXYZ,

ONYX has something similar with their Boox devices, but the colors look kinda dull in both cases.

LilaOrchidee,

Maybe one of the boox devices might fit your description?

MartinXYZ,

If I recall correctly, even the Boox devices don’t do colors that well… But it’s better than nothing. Also, I forgot to mention I’d prefer if it was affordable. I’ll go back and add that to my original post.

Aesk,

This is my dream device as well.

I’ve gotten into lasers as a hobby this last couple years because deep down I’m still just a kid who craves a lightsaber.

Luckily laser guns are still pretty doable

trash80,

Check out styropyro on youtube. He likes lasers.

owiseedoubleyou,

A laptop with fully libre firmware that actually has good specs.

Collatz_problem,

The Big Mazovian Sausage Grinder.

nycki,

Literally just an android phone, but it comes pre-rooted and one of the system apps is a scripting language, similar to how the TI-83 comes with TI-BASIC. It’s bullshit that we’re carrying these powerful super-computers everywhere but with less user empowerment then a mid-tier calculator.

(yes, I know you can root your phone and install termux and python but I want that to be the default)

usernamesaredifficul,

robot butler that does all my chores

Orcocracy,

A train that has a stop somewhere in my neighbourhood.

Kittenstix,

A bag of holding would be pretty sweet, barring that, an open source brain chip.

vettnerk, (edited )

An updated Samsung Galaxy Note with a quality stylus (Similar to the one for Note 2), and no bloatware that cannot be uninstalled.

Samsung always has tonnes of bloatware, and the newer Note styluses are (and feel like) cheap plastic. Give me back the aluminum stylus, ffs.

jlarex,

A bare keyboard attached to a screen, that I could plug my phone (possibly running Phosh) and use it as a hardware for a laptop experience

Back in the day there was a phone called motorola atrix 4g, they made a lapdock for it that let you do this. There was also 3d party company that made lapdocks for modern Samsung phones that support Dex, but I’m not sure if they’re still aournd.

cRazi_man, (edited )

Some companies still make these but they’re not well known since it’s such an incredibly niche product:

nexdock.com

www.uperfectmonitor.com/collections/lapdock

There isn’t much point in having such a low power and utility limited device when a cheap low powered Windows laptop can cost a similar amount and run any Windows app you want.

jlarex,

Yeah that’s the one I was thinking about, thanks!

Plus if you just want to sync data there are already plenty of cloud based and data syncing services that can fulfill that without needing a phone laptop.

That said with USB C based devices in theory you should be able to use use an adapter in order to plug in an hdmi, and mouse and keyboard(or use a bluetuth one)

CoopaLoopa,

Your second wish already exists. It’s made by a company called nexdock. I think you can plug your phone in or run it over bluetooth/WiFi.

Time machine, please

Hexbear2,

Star Trek Industrial Replicator…Star Trek has never really had an episode that explored the magic of what you could do if you had a replicator. Just having ONE, would change the world overnight, and forever. I’d start replicating replicators and handing them out.

SassyPants,

There was an episode of Orville that explored that very thing.
