Why don't rabies infected humans act like rabies infected animals

This always puzzled me. Why don’t humans act much more aggressive or crazed like its often depicted with animals. Afaik there’s 2 types of rabies, “dumb” and “furious” so my question is more towards the 2nd type. For example, we never hear of rabies causing a human to accidentally bite another human so why is that?

arthur,

I don’t know the specifics, but the relationship between bats and viruses are different than other mammals.

arthur,

Apple, Microsoft and Google, on the other hand, decides what is best for them, shove it down the users’ throats and get users’ money (and personal data) in return…

I think some criticism still valid though (but not the entitlement).

arthur,

It will depend on how many instances will join the extensions…

arthur,

I have a different argument for why Meta could kill the Fediverse. Even before they engage on Embrace Extend Extinguish strategy, the simple fact that Meta will have an extremely large user base from the start may kill financially the rest of Fediverse.

All projects that embrace ActivityPub are not prepared to deal with the volume of data that a Meta’s facebook-like or twitter-like project would bring.

In a best case scenario it would force the development of current Fediverse projects to focus on sustentability earlier than necessary, and the missing features would be delayed. And that alone would cause problems to the future of such projects.

On the other hand, the smaller nodes would see the storage costs rising fast and would be at a higher risk of dying simply because they would not be able to pay.

arthur,

It depends on what you mean.

Switching to Debian on my gaming pc

Hello everyone - I have been wanting to ditch windows on my gaming pc for a while now, and since I have recently finished a large project, I now have the free time to switch. I am relatively comfortable with Debian having used it for a while on my web server as well as school laptop, but I am concerned about using it on my...

arthur,

From Arch to Debian, that’s a 180° on stability. But to be honest, I’m using arch for 2 months now and everything seems very stable. I had no problems, yet.

You must pick a point in human history before the 1950s to be spend the rest of your life in. What era and place would you choose?

You would still have the same age, gender, personality, skin color, etc. and you would be able to speak at least one local language and would know basic information of the era and place. Your family, social standing, and such would be randomly picked.

arthur,

Racism is a european “invention”, and can be dated. If you choose any place “before racism”, that will not be an issue.

And also, you can choose any place in a time without europeans.

arthur,

Why?

arthur,

Organ trafficking as a hobby

arthur,

TIL that Brazil has a Thanksgiving day… But we do not celebrate it, and -unfortunately- it’s not a holiday.

Anyway, I’m glad of the friendships that I have and had.

arthur,

Some pests (not only cockroaches) keeps the sewage unclogged by consuming solids.

arthur,

Humans are not the problem. Ultrarich people are.

arthur,

Touché. We need to do better xD.

Is it just me, or has the BS with OpenAI shown that nobody in the AI space actually cares about "safeguarding AGI?"

Money wins, every time. They’re not concerned with accidentally destroying humanity with an out-of-control and dangerous AI who has decided “humans are the problem.” (I mean, that’s a little sci-fi anyway, an AGI couldn’t “infect” the entire internet as it currently exists.)...

arthur,

Not now, not in the current state of machine learning. And also, I don’t think it would happen intentionally like the sci-fi scenarios. But I think the gray goo hypothesis very plausible if we reach some kind of true AI.

Which is not the case yet, LLMs are just autocomplete systems, very powerful for sure, but just that.

For now, the main concern should be economy and social disruptions caused by the use of such tools… And the current climatic apocalypse.

arthur,

Valve created gamescope, that’s a microcompositor just for games. Other Wayland compositors may still break games.

arthur,

Some people just want to watch the world burn

arthur,

You can harvest everything from the we client, but there are no simple solution for this problem, both are too different from each other.

Question to those not in the USA, and who have lived outside the USA.

I’ve been thinking about something and want to check an assumption I have. I only hear directly from other people in the USA, and interract with the global community through memes. How are the gun regulations/laws different from yours in terms of strictness, and do you wish there was more or less where you live?...

arthur,

In Brazil guns are expensive (multiple monthly minimum wage), there are no gun shops easily available and the Policia Federal (kinda like FBI) needs to check your background and approve you before you buy (and they usually don’t).

Last presidential term, Bolsonaro tried to make easier to buy and have guns available, and as result a lot of guns got in the hands of organized crime. Now most of these changes were revoked.

I don’t like guns around, you guys have a huge problem with school shootings and this trend is spreading to Brazil (and we have problems enough already). A peaceful society with guns can be peaceful; a violent society without guns easily available will be violent; but a violent society with guns will be far more deadly.

arthur,

Use of some violence is justified to stop another bigger, ongoing violence.

arthur, (edited )

I don’t believe that is what you meant, but @dewritoninja has a point: on your definition, where is the acceptable limit for the violence-to-supress-violence?

PS: “An eye for an eye” (law of exact retaliation) was written to suppress escalation of violence. And usually people consider even that excessive.

arthur,

I don’t think it made sense, even at that time. Those cities were mainly built with wood, and US used a lot of fire against Japan.

The use of nuclear power against Japan was more like a test and a message, it was not needed to win the war. (At least this is what I remember from this documentary )

arthur,

Humans can be found outside America too.

arthur,

For Africa and Asia it did.

Yeah, sorry. It would be more correct to say 110 years ago for Asia.

arthur,

Yeah, I know. Not only Africa, europeans should kept themselves at their land.

What are some of the best optimizations you applied to your code?

Got myself a few months ago into the optimization rabbit hole as I had a slow quant finance library to take care of, and for now my most successful optimizations are using local memory allocators (see my C++ post, I also played with mimalloc which helped but custom local memory allocators are even better) and rethinking class...

arthur,

I remember getting 9x improvement on a set of Shell scripts at work, piping the results instead of writing and reading from files at each step.

At what age and how do you tell children about the truth of Christmas?

I’m writing this as someone who has mostly lived in the US and Canada. Personally, I find the whole “lying to children about Christmas” thing just a bit weird (no judgment on those who enjoy this aspect of the holiday). But because it’s completely normalized in our culture, this is something many people have to deal...

Not sure if it will help, I was looking for another video about Santa specifically. But could not find it. In that video he says that he did not dismiss Santa’s tales but also did not engage with it. And at a certain point question the tales and asked the kids how they know that’s Santa who is giving them presents. Then the kids looked for ways to find out, and discovered themselves. (If I remember correctly)

arthur,

As the project evolves, there will be fixes for that kind of problem, it is not an immediate problem.

arthur,

TBH, not all games works on windows out of the box either. It usually is better than Linux, but I always need to do some adjustments when playing on desktop; to really work with minimal effort, it needs to be a console.

arthur,

If something is worth sharing there, it will come here or somewhere else where you can see it eventually. The only thing you are really missing, is some content from a creator you like. But usually they have their own platforms where you can find them.

arthur,

Lemmy may die, everything will. But as long as it is not for-profit, I think it will be good. Everything that venture capital touches turns into shit.

arthur, (edited )

That’s the beauty of open source, if they do that, others can continue the work without the original* authors.

arthur,

Not a machine, but there are some cool videos on folding technics.

arthur,

That would be awesome.

arthur,

Expect this and they killing some of their products.

Hypothetically speaking, what alterations to our biology/genome would need to occur in order for us to be able to safely drink saltwater?

Could we, in theory, use something like CRISPR to give a new baby replacement super-kidneys (or whatever organ it is that makes drinking saltwater be a bad time)? It seems like if we cracked that, we’d be set as a species....

arthur,

If we grow some crop with salt water, we will be literally salting the earth, so unless we are talking about hydroponics/aquaponics, that would be very damaging for the soil and environment. That needs to be consider as well.

arthur,

Sea turtles have an organ that excretes the excess of salt near their eyes to deal with that.

arthur,
arthur,

Probably need to make sure that the salt is being contained to the farm area, and I’d imagine you would need to periodically flush it with fresh water or something if too much salt begins to accumulate in the soil for even your salt tolerant crops.

That seems hard to manage. And there is also the risk of that salt to reach underground water. I would say that it’s feasible to do it right, but at a high cost.

Hydroponics seems more manageable IMO.

arthur,

But possibly more damaging, and less accountable.

arthur,

How low the barrier is depends on how good is your prior knowledge. If you are a millennial that remember the internet before Facebook, it’s probably very easy to understand the gist. For older people who never got into how computers work, or younger people that only saw the internet through smartphone apps, that barrier may be higher than we feel.

arthur,

The richest person can not be X times richer than poorest person.

Choose the X value wisely. Mine is 1000.

arthur,

🙄 Top 1% and Bottom 1% then

arthur,

“more effective” depends on which criteria you value for your voting system to have.

I value the Condorcet Winner, majority and independence of clones criteria.

arthur,

That’s why writing laws is hard. But you get the intention: limit wealth inequality.
