Stocks. Nice thread idea btw.

Thanks

Otome-chan, in What were some "bad habits" on reddit that we should try to avoid bringing over here?
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

downvoting for disagreement. people on reddit treat upvotes/downvotes as agree/disagree, when they really should be used to promote thoughtful and good content, not necessarily what you agree with. If you think someone is participating in a thread properly, and promoting and inviting discussion and making the place better (even if you disagree with them) you should upvote instead.

reddit all too often let "lazy" comments float to the top because they were agreeable with the masses, but low effort.

mr47,

It’s a good point, but very difficult (maybe even impossible) to achieve. Downvoting to disagree is a kneejerk reaction that is very easy to do, so it’s going to require a lot of self discipline to avoid - and I don’t think you can expect that from most people.

SuiXi3D,
@SuiXi3D@kbin.social avatar

I don't even really think that there should be downvotes. Just different categories of votes, kinda like how Fark does comments with 'Smart' and 'Funny' votes.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

While a better system might be one where you can apply a range of reactions to a post, that would probably make things look cluttered and spammy (if a post has a dozen different reactions on it)

The upvote/downvote system seems like the most useful one, at least right now while people are migrating over and these sites are in the expansion phase

Prouvaire,
@Prouvaire@kbin.social avatar

@AnonymousLlama I like forum software that offers a range of reactions (ala vBulletin / XenForo). The default reaction could be a simple "Like" with an additional click or two required to change the reaction to Informative, Agree, Funny, Sad etc. Two of these reactions (probably positioned last to add that extra little bit of friction) might be Disagree and Off-Topic.

But if this is too convoluted, maybe just cap the number of downvotes a post/thread can get. So if a post gets 5 (or whatever the cap number is) downvotes, additional downvotes do not change the downvote counter. This would discourage "piling on" but there'd still be an indicator that a post might be poor quality or contentious. On the other hand, upvotes should probably be unlimited (or have a higher cap number) to encourage positive feedback.

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I avoid it on my instance by disabling downvotes

KarsicKarl,

Of course downvotes can be ironic such as the one I've just added....

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

My instance just drops external downvotes, so it's all the same thing to me :)

PupBiru,
@PupBiru@kbin.social avatar

okay, but in a social environment like the fediverse it kinda doesn’t matter what your instance does: up and down votes are entirely to do with other people, and their instances still show all your down votes

disabling downvotes on your instance just means your local communities don’t have down votes: your posts on other instances still do!

fubo, in Why do some people have a extreme hate for Furries?

My guess is it's pretty similar to drag hate.

Someone has a discomfort with blurring certain boundaries in society, and they express it as violent eliminationism — especially after being encouraged to do so as an "acceptable target" by bullies, propagandists, or other haters.

Just as with drag costuming & performance, furry is not itself a sex practice — but it's often closely connected with queer sexualities.

Furrydom also applies queerness to things that many folks feel protective of, such as cute animals, and characters that are (or appear to be) from children's media. That triggers the "queers are pedophiles" delusion, which is not new — look up Anita Bryant but has been heavily popularized by fascists of late.

TGRush, in Best news aggregator? Where do you get your news?
@TGRush@forum.fail avatar

RSS never fails me.

dismalnow,
@dismalnow@kbin.social avatar

Same. Also using IFTTT and Pocket to automatically aggregate my own feed from sources I enjoy to curate my own feed to my Kobo reader.

Feels snazzy to read the news in e-ink so that my OLED work/play world and news world are separate.

rcoelho14,
@rcoelho14@kbin.social avatar

And when, for some reason, there isn't an RSS feed given by the website, check RSS-Bridge and see if it has the site you want ;)

(and if it doesn't, if you know PHP, consider contributing with your own bridge)

natarey,
@natarey@kbin.social avatar

Wow! I've been a heavy RSS user forever, and this is the first I've heard of RSS-Bridge -- thanks for this!

rcoelho14,
@rcoelho14@kbin.social avatar

Just learned about it last week here on Kbin, because of the Reddit blackout.
I've been feeding a lot of sources to my RSS programs, and just found out a lot of sites either hide or don't have RSS, so that project was enticing.

So I contributed with 4 sources to help it grow ahahah

sgibson5150,
@sgibson5150@kbin.social avatar

The decline (and perhaps fall) of reddit put me in the position of needing an Android RSS client/newsreader app for the first time. I want to say I used to use the functionality built into Firefox? Is that right? Anyway, for Android I've been using Inoreader. Seems to work ok. Mostly use it for the AP news RSS feed.

MxRemy, in You just won One Billion Dollars, what are you buying?
@MxRemy@lemmy.one avatar

Easy. I'm building a low-income non-equity housing co-op. It'll have very small homes built from sustainable materials, distributed throughout a permaculture-based native plants food forest. In the middle there will be a big central space that functions as a community kitchen, storage space, and venue. The buildings will all be connected through a series of raised, fenced-in, roofed walkways that allow animal life to pass underneath, but also are accessibly designed for (provided) wheelchair/scooter use. We'll run all the wiring through these as well. It'll be powered by solar/etc and we'll have our own self-hosted municipal wifi with free email addresses and storage for residents. And etc, etc lol, obviously this is a very long standing pipe dream for me.

Talaraine,
@Talaraine@kbin.social avatar

I could get behind that!

brownpaperbag,
@brownpaperbag@kbin.social avatar

My husband and I had a similar idea but for ourselves and friends versus your purpose-built need. With a billion dollars we can do both and then some so I'll build my commune and pay for yours to exist in multiple areas globally.

Hyggyldy,

An excess of single family housing is a major contributor to homelessness. We need denser housing. I'd rather work towards building something like a dense arcology. Somewhere for people to live that makes efficient use of the space to grow plants.

MxRemy,
@MxRemy@lemmy.one avatar

I knew about this problem, the whole issue with the tradeoffs/advantages/disadvantages between having denser housing vs having adequate green space. However, I didn't know there were any reasonably well developed potential solutions! Thank you for introducing me to the concept of Arcology, this is awesome.

What if my proposed setup was more like tall dense multifamily buildings instead? Maybe something like how Pueblo housing worked?

Hyggyldy,

That's not a bad idea. Kinda combining the ideas. Smallish apartment buildings or multiplexes with lots of green space?

MxRemy,
@MxRemy@lemmy.one avatar

Yeah exactly. I feel like it might be more kind of "doable" on a smaller community-level scale, which appeals to me because anarchy. I don't know how well it actually threads that needle though, and whether it introduces its own problems

Hyggyldy,

That makes a lot of sense.

Flaky_Fish69, (edited )
@Flaky_Fish69@kbin.social avatar

My first thought was reaching out to a property developer I know, and paying them to take care of the housing crisis in the state… housing first. I would then shame the absolute living fuck out of the people here that are more interested in children’s genitals, on behalf of some asshole god they worship.

Not quite as environmentally friendly- there would be efforts, but, then I would also use a substantial chunk of it to invest into things like solar or batteries, and energy grid development.

I would also buy myself the Lego venator kit. (Star Wars, Vader’s flagship from ESB).

JustHach, in Best news aggregator? Where do you get your news?
@JustHach@kbin.social avatar

I generally just listen to public broadcast radio, then follow up any stories that interest me with an internet search to get a general idea of the story and weed out the biases.

Devi, in I just found out that the people onboard the Titan submarine are dead. Is OceanGate in trouble?

Probably. They got people to sign a waiver so they're probably partially covered, but there will no doubt be some law suits occuring and a lot of money going from both sides to pay for them.

I'm thinking the company is done for.

NotInTheFace,
@NotInTheFace@lemmy.world avatar

Even without law suits, their credibility as a company will be destroyed. Can't imagine anyone paying to go into one of their subs again.

Flaky_Fish69,
@Flaky_Fish69@kbin.social avatar

even without credibility... I doubt very much that OceanGate has the liability insurance to cover the millions of dollars blown on the recovery effort. Not for a submarine that was never certified by a 3rd party, was never not-experimental (and was experimental to get around safety regulations...)

In fact, I would be very surprised that OceanGate had liability insurance, considering the risks involved. and that the only assurance the sub was in fact in good order is a giant "trust me, bro".

RiikkaTheIcePrincess,
@RiikkaTheIcePrincess@kbin.social avatar

was never not-experimental

Is that why it had "five crew" and not "a pilot and four passengers?" 'Cause "passengers" would imply commercial use but this is crosses fingers a totally legit prototype with a "crew" of "mission specialists" simply "testing" it or some such?

Flaky_Fish69,
@Flaky_Fish69@kbin.social avatar

probably

but like if you've got people renting a submersible for science... Like the Triton sub... those are crew and not passengers.

you know... if I paid $250k for a ride... I'd expect seats. and maybe something other than a bottle to piss in. possibly more than a curtain so my shits don't get smelled by... everyone...

jimmyjazx,

I would insist everyone poo before we leave

Flaky_Fish69,
@Flaky_Fish69@kbin.social avatar

You can insist…

But I’m definitely going to shit myself when the giant squid tries to grab some submersible tail…

ritswd, in Now that you've used Lemmy and /kbin which do you prefer and why?

Lemmy. I really worry that any karma system will lead to lower-quality communities faster, because of the incentives it creates to gamify it. I appreciate that the Lemmy devs have intentionally stayed away from having a karma system at all.

killick, in You just won One Billion Dollars, what are you buying?
@killick@kbin.social avatar

After setting up my family for life, I'd use the rest to start a micro-lending company for small businesses to get started or expand. I'd open them next to dollar stores and hire lots of bilingual people. We'd have free business plan advice, too. For fun I'd buy houses in lousy neighborhoods, fix them up and fit them out with solar and geothermal systems, then offer to trade the house with a neighbor and repeat the process. This would cost money but a billion can go a long way one house at a time and see step one.

EvilMonkeySlayer, in You just won One Billion Dollars, what are you buying?

I am disappointed in the lack of "your mum/mom" jokes.

YolkBrushWork402,
@YolkBrushWork402@kbin.social avatar

It's because of your mom oknojkjk

carlyman,

I don't need a billion for that; I have enough in my sofa seats to buy your mum.

Timwi, in What are some fun Hindi phrases I can share with telemarketers calling from India?
@Timwi@kbin.social avatar

It’ll be hard for you to know whether the people calling will know Hindi. If they’re calling from Delhi or New Delhi, the chances are high. If they’re calling from Mumbai, they might well be Marathi speakers instead. In Kolkata, the main language is Bengali. India is full of different languages.

YolkBrushWork402, in Is it possible to see who is subscribed to a magazine?
@YolkBrushWork402@kbin.social avatar

I don't think so, but I'm not exactly reliable, maybe look at KbinMeta

ElleChaise, in What piece of kit or setup represents the pinnacle of your hobby/profession?

An industrial sewing machine, or an old sewing machine. It seems like every time I meet somebody who's dedicated to the craft, they're rocking some post-war anvil as an every day workhorse.

1marshall91,

Also a serger and coverstitch machine set up in the same space.

dodgypast, in What piece of kit or setup represents the pinnacle of your hobby/profession?

For me it's my home server. 110TB at the moment, running UNRAID as a VM under proxmox. Also a load of software setup to share it's resources with my friends.

Flaky_Fish69, (edited ) in How do you stay interested in something for a long time?
@Flaky_Fish69@kbin.social avatar

Take breaks.

A hobby is supposed to be fun, or relaxing. Step back for a bit when it stops. (This is why good hobbies frequently make bad jobs.)

ETA: it's also not important that hobbies be perfect or even useful, take the stress of perfection out of it. enjoy the imperfection.

I think we assume a lot of the +1000hr folks are better when in actuality they probably just enjoy doing it whether good or bad at it!
