pliny, in What's an innocent misconception about your hobby/profession that drives you up the wall?
@pliny@kbin.social avatar

I have been a machinist/model maker for 10 years now.

No, I can't just take your .prt/.iges/.stl/.stp file and "load it into the machine and press the green button".

I use that quote because it was said to me by a particularly arrogant engineering intern. Machining is a complex trade that is made to seem simple because of software and modern automation. While that is fantastic for my profession, it brings with it this idea that I'm not really doing all that much work. Reality is that I'm constantly applying my knowledge of the trade and the things I do might be subtle to the onlookers, but there was a lesson learned before now that took me hours or days to overcome. I train a lot of our machining interns now who are mostly folks in the 20-25 years old range and every single on of them so far as had that humbling moment of "Oh I learned about this in the classroom and did it on the simulator, I know exactly what I'm doing" only to fail. Its a great line of work that is very satisfying for a lot of reasons but it does grind my gears when its portrayed as being unskilled or easy.

Badabinski,

I think a lot of people would benefit from learning on manual machines. I had this misconception in my early twenties, but watching (and then using) manual machines was really helpful.

chrimbus, in What's an innocent misconception about your hobby/profession that drives you up the wall?

I write electronic music. Misconception is that some assume people actually listen to my music.

zebus, in How do you stay interested in something for a long time?
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

I've just accepted it's my personality type and I jump around hobbies. People are built different, I'm sure the people who can focus 1000 hours on a hobby have other things they wish they did different. Embrace yourself and how your brain works when it comes to your leisure time.

That being said if I have something I want to focus on for self-growth/productivity reasons I use bullet journaling to hold myself accountable and stay on track. It's helped a lot.

LifeInOregon, in You just won One Billion Dollars, what are you buying?
@LifeInOregon@kbin.social avatar
  1. A modest house.
  2. A second (functioning) vehicle for my family.
  3. Some apartments that I can turn into transitional housing for houseless and/or low income families, along with a staff of full time handymen, social workers, and counselors for facilities and transitional support.
  4. Create a healthcare fund/endowment investment managed by someone competent. It would be used to pay medical collections debts using the interest it draws.
  5. I dunno. A billion dollars goes a long way. Well above and beyond any amount I ever anticipate needing, let alone having. Maybe some Picassos to hang in my modest house.
BraveSirZaphod, in You just won One Billion Dollars, what are you buying?
@BraveSirZaphod@kbin.social avatar

Dump it all in some low-risk diverse funds, live off only a portion of the returns, and otherwise try to forget about it.

Merlu, in You just won One Billion Dollars, what are you buying?

Juste some ideas that crossed my mind, maybe all at once is too expensive for one billion.

  1. Clearing all my debts.
  2. Shop only ethical products.
  3. Support lot of projects that are close to my heart.
  4. Corrupt politicians to incite them to make ethical choices.
  5. Buy shady companies and let them sink.
  6. Create my own utopic nation and corrupt the UN to let them recognize it.
Tigbitties,
@Tigbitties@kbin.social avatar

#4 is on my list.

killick,
@killick@kbin.social avatar

Oh, I would TOTALLY buy some US Senators. You think I could afford both Sinema & Manchin?

TubeTalkerX,

You would not believe how cheap some politicians are. Some in Congress can be bought for as little as $10K!

grahamsz,

On point 1, i was discussing this with my partner and she replied "I know you'd keep the 2.75% mortgage". I felt seen

Double_A,

A billion is nothing on the scale of points 5 and 6 though...

kursis,

Easy, I'll buy twitter. What will I do with the rest of 1 999 900 dollars? Put it on red.

xc2215x, in Why do some people have a extreme hate for Furries?

Some people think all furries want sex with animals.

LollerCorleone, (edited ) in Best news aggregator? Where do you get your news?
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

I generally avoid news aggregators because I see them as an extra layer of filter between news publishers and me. I just regularly follow a number of national and international publications as a habit.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

Yea I'm trying to get away from the political bias and echo chambering a singular news source gives you, but at same time like aggregators for being time efficient. That ground.news another person shouted out actually seems really interesting and to fit the bill. It gives you multiple viewpoints of each trending news story and labels what bias they are leaning.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

But they will still get to decide which news stories should be given prominence and if they are your only source, you will never know if they omit some less 'trendy' but important story. News publications do this as well, but if you follow enough of them with varying editorial leanings, it kind of fixes that issue. You could set up a RSS feed aggregator to achieve this as well I guess.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

True true, maybe I just need a good mixture in an rss, decent aggregator + my own curated primary news sources. Tbh the thing I like best about a good aggregator is it’s kinda like Reddit, occasionally you will get a great off the wall article from a a source you would of never of followed or had on your own rss. Such as a local news for somewhere you don’t even live.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, there is nothing wrong in going through news aggregators. I just don't find it wise to use them as the only source of news or even the primary source, like many do.

And there is also the fact that the more influential news aggregators become, the more dependent news publishers (especially the small newsrooms who struggle with readership and revenue streams) will be to them. And since the popular ones are mostly run by big tech, that's not good anyway whatsoever.

barf, in You just won One Billion Dollars, what are you buying?

Get a lawyer or 10, probably gonna need em.

AlternativeEmphasis, in Foreign memes?

I wouldn't see any issue really, there's talk of trying to fully migrate content from certain reddit subs to here. A few memes from your reddit account won't get you crucified.

curiosityLynx,

@AlternativeEmphasis

@Semmelstulle

Just exhumed, drawn and quartered.

Oh wait, we're not talking about Cromwell.

honung, in Thunder in your head?

I believe this could be the result of the tensor tympani muscle activating, which it tends to do in fight-or-flight situations. It is located in your ear and has the purpose of lowering sounds that may otherwise make you deaf. I remember there was/is a subreddit called r/earrumblersassemble , consisting of people who claimed they could voluntarily "rumble" this muscle, and I happen to be one of them. Anyway, it does resemble a thundering noise, and it does activate when I'm startled.

nevernevermore,

r/earrumblersunite , consisting of people who claimed they could voluntarily "rumble" this muscle, and I happen to be one of them.

okay how is this the first i'm hearing of this?? I've been able to do this as long as I can remember, I didn't realise not everybody could until this moment

Tigbitties,
@Tigbitties@kbin.social avatar

I can do this too. Weird. I just thought everyone can do it. I just flex the muscles around me ears.

JunkMilesDavis,
@JunkMilesDavis@kbin.social avatar

Same here, never knew it was unusual until the internet informed me. I could just be wired wrong since it also starts kicking off involuntarily in an uncomfortable way when I'm around too much loud conversation.

honung,

That happens to me too. It's called Tensor Tympani Syndrome (TTTS), which is probably a result of Hyperacusis. There are subreddits for those too. The most important thing is not to overprotect your hearing since that will only make your ear muscles even more sensitive. Feel free to message me if you're having trouble :) My symptoms used to be quite bad but nowadays I go weeks without thinking about it, so I'm practically cured.

JunkMilesDavis,
@JunkMilesDavis@kbin.social avatar

Thank you, I appreciate it. It really helps to learn that it's identifiable and treatable.

honung,

Happy to help!

curiosityLynx, (edited )

I can also voluntarily make my ear rumble, but I've never experienced it rumbling without willing it to or yawning extra wide.

skepickle, in Why do downvotes affect karma, but upvotes don't?
@skepickle@kbin.social avatar

Boosts count as positive reputation currently.

adonis,
@adonis@kbin.social avatar

yeah, but the boost buttin is olaced elsewhere and not at the same level as the downvote button... and people usually click one of these two

Ferk, (edited )
@Ferk@kbin.social avatar

Honestly, they should put the downvote next to the boost and renamed to something more meaningful if it's not the opposite of an upvote. Everyone is bound to eventually get some amount of upvotes/downvotes, but boosts are not something given as easily (some people might not wanna use boosts at all!).

Then if something opposite to the upvote is wanted, add a different method. So we'll have upvote/downvote with no (or little) effect on reputation, and then something like boost/penalize.

The way it is now it kind of discourages participation in any popular topic if your opinion can be polarizing (even if it's totally respectful and valid) or if there's a significan minority of people who dislike what you said (even if most people upvoted it). Your reputation will be penalized, even when you are being polite, citing valid sources and your vote balance is still positive.

curiosityLynx,

Technically, it's supposed to be upvotes-downvotes, but boost and upvote used to be the same thing. The boost function is the older of the two, so when they got split, the new thing became upvotes, but the reputation system wasn't updated. That's what I understood from other comments elsewhere anyway.

SpaceCadet2000,

And you can boost yourself!

skepickle,
@skepickle@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, but that's just tacky ;-)

curiosityLynx, (edited )

Boosting is essentially retweeting. On Kbin that means it appears as a toot in your microblog. If you have people following you, boosting your post so they see it makes sense. In Reddit terms, it's like one-click crossposting to your profile/personal user subreddit.

Gargleblaster,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

Then why do we have upvotes?

skepickle,
@skepickle@kbin.social avatar

Kbin is under development... Why is the boost being used instead of upvote? I have no idea, but I do suspect a series of events definitely occurred for ernest to end up here. Will it change in the future, who am I to say?

Ferk, (edited )
@Ferk@kbin.social avatar

I feel it's mainly because of the desire to integrate with Mastodon as well.
He explains a bit about that here: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/3

There's also a ticket about changing how reputation is calculated: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/80

TeaHands, in Now that you've used Lemmy and /kbin which do you prefer and why?
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

I've not tried Kbin myself, but I've poked around it and the husband is on there so I've had a detailed tour. Initially picked Lemmy because I found the design of it in general to be more modern and pleasing, and seeing him use Kbin has definitely reinforced that choice for me.

Then I see threads with tons of people saying it's the exact other way round and Lemmy looks too old fashioned for them!

So I guess what I'm saying is we're all just clueless apes who have no idea what we're talking about and it's good there's an option for everyone 😆

I'll probably make a Kbin account at some point anyway though since that's the easier codebase for me to contribute to.

GONADS125,

I think people can make logical points for and against each, but yeah it really just boils down to personal preference. I like Lemmy better myself, and most of the complaints I see about it will be smoothed out in due time.

0xtero, in You just won One Billion Dollars, what are you buying?
@0xtero@kbin.social avatar

I'd be on high alert, because that sounds like a goddamn phishing e-mail!
Are there also hot singles in my area?

readbeanicecream, in What's your idea of relaxation/a relaxing time?
@readbeanicecream@kbin.social avatar
  1. Low lights, stiff drink, and a good book.
  2. Cool breeze, cold beer, and a hammock in the shade.
  3. Hot grill, jazz, and an Arnold Palmer.

Or any combination of the above.

Shivs,
@Shivs@kbin.social avatar

Had to look Arnold Palmer up - looks nice! I'd never have thought of combining the two.
