xia,

True, but… at least for me… it’s probably because i disabled it the instant i started getting “enhanced” salesy texts from corporations.

xia,

It’s like stepping into a strange alien world, that is also (somehow) 100% safe… but the few times i have reached this world, it vanishes seconds later (feels like it is because increased brain activity of the awareness) so it is also a very fragile and precious state (for me).

xia,

Sure. If your HOA does not like you, they will use your own money to pay lawyers against you, to dispossess you of your house. 'Murica!

If you had a one-way ticket to Jan 1, 1999 that departs on Jan 1, 2024, and you are allowed to bring whatever fits into a backpack with you, what would you bring to use to take over the world, and how would you use it? (kbin.social)

Assume that the future can change based on your actions, so any historical information that you bring along with you from the intervening 25 years may quickly drift out of the new realities history....

xia,

All the FLOSS software i could put my hands on (with source code), a couple awesome smartphones, wikipedia dump, sports almanac, and a stable-diffusion rig.

Best Linux Distro for a tablet?

Been wanting to put Linux on my Surface Pro 7, but when i tried it with Ubuntu, it didn’t work as well as I’d like. I used the Surface driver kernel, but Ubuntu wasn’t really good with touch. It couldn’t give a pop up keyboard (only showed up when logging into my account, but never beyond that). Sometimes it wouldn’t...

xia,

It’s a clever torch stand. If it’s empty, you put your (long) torch in the top hole (stabilized by the bottom hole). If there is already one, you slide it two notches down instead and pivot the whole device (so it’s balanced). Same with the third, but pick/pivot out of plane with the others. Works with one hand, keeps houses from burning down, great widget.

xia,

When i realized “there are no adults” (as a child would define it, of authority)… only children, peers, and those lusting for power.

xia,

Terror? Carbon monoxide alarm. Less for the sound, and more for the mental strife after what you are 99% sure it is a false alarm… as that 1% doubt (that might kill you in your sleep) keeps you from sleeping.

xia,

It’s good to have options.

xia,

…and less effective, and more proprietary, and more homogenous.

xia,

“Kick it”? (Rap beat starts playing)

xia,

I hate that i actually understand this.

xia,

…and now they get chains.

xia,

More “The Expanse” would be awesome.

What are your criteria for upvoting/downvoting?

I hate that I always compare Lemmy to Reddit, but Reddit used to have (not sure if they still do) guidelines called “Reddiquette” that included guidelines about upvoting and downvoting. I don’t remember the specifics (and sending too much of my browser traffic to Reddit makes me feel dirty) but one of the guidelines was...

xia,

“Glad i saw that” -> up-vote, “Wish i didn’t see that” -> down-vote

xia,

All I’m hearing is a subscription to remove the adverts on the command line.

xia,

When the curse of the legacy code breaks free from the arcane rune circle painted around the server rack from days of old…

System76, starlabs, protectli, raptor computing…

Could we use AI to update 4:3 media to 16:9?

I’ve been re-watching star trek voyager recently, and I’ve heard when filming, they didn’t clear the wide angle of filming equipment, so it’s not as simple as just going back to the original film. With the advancement of AI, is it only a matter of time until older programs like this are released with more updated...

xia,

Ahhh… the much-fabled “uncrop” operation!

xia,

A human having a stroke…

xia,

Shouldn’t it be “volume” though… not “mass”?

xia,

Is this a “dark tower” reference?

xia,

Such a sketchy domain name.

xia,

Then the moment you plug it in it says 80%, but dies when you unplug it.

xia,

This is so stupid… i love it!

xia,

It’s always so hard to see in screen… low contrast I guess.

xia,

How about ANY kind of laptop with a keyboard designed for human hands instead of type-writer compatibility (i.e. ortholinear).

Manufacturer remote lock over "illegally imported devices"

Recently Motorola followed by Samsung started disabling/locking devices flagged as “illegal” through Mexico marking a precedent over the remote control manufacturers have over the devices they sell! Only after Mexican government made an official request to manufacturers they removed the lock....

xia,

That they would even build such a remote lock into “not their phone” is Orwellian technofacism.

xia,

I was thinking more “ship of Theseus”… what is “you”?

xia,

Overly attached hegemon.

xia,

As an experiment, one can right down their deep thoughts, plans, and revelations… then read them sober… it can be quite entertaining.

xia,

Maybe that instance has downvotes disabled?

xia,

Many VPNs will support multi-hop, where the concentrator you connect to is not the same as the exit/egress point.

xia,

Yea! Fake summaries of fake reviews!

xia,

I guess that keeps the honest terrorists off planes?
