Hi, I'm an as-of-yet unpublished YA author and high school math teacher who just joined Mastodon. I'm looking out for suggestions of who to follow in the writing/teaching community!

@writeplace @bookstodon @edutooters Welcome! Another couple of daily prompt hashtags for writing are and if you like that sort of thing. You'll find a lot of authors there as well

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@floofpaldi @writeplace @bookstodon @edutooters How embarrassing for me! 🤣🤣 Thanks for catching it and correcting

Finished up edits on another draft of the novel. Hooray!🎉🎉🎉

Any takers for a beta read for a 175k word low, dark, fantasy? I know it's a heavy lift and would gladly swap or help out in some other way. Thanks!

@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@Lionesslady @bookstodon
No specific timeline, though if possible, I'd prefer to have it by the end of the year. Looking for any comments one would have. It has gone through a few drafts at this point so I'm more interested in pacing, whether there is any pressure to keep reading, do the arcs work and if payoffs feel earned. More plot/character focused, but anything is welcomed.

@TheSurrealAri @bookstadon Ah! How did I forget to list Dirk Gently's? My favorite Douglas Adams. Great list!

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@TheSurrealAri @bookstadon Yeah, I didn't necessarily do all my favorites but I tried to think of books I've read a lot or seem to always go back to for one reason or another. But you're right, it was always going to feel like I was leaving out books because there's just too many good ones to leave at 13.

@philip_cardella @bookstodon I haven't read a lot of the Star Wars books but I really enjoyed Thrawn. It made me think I should read more of them. And then I got distracted

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@philip_cardella @bookstodon Maybe I should check out the Ahsoka book since I haven't started the show yet

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@philip_cardella @bookstodon I haven't and I know I should but I just don't have the time, 2 young kids take that all up. Maybe I'll get around to it someday but I like that I can read some of the stories

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@philip_cardella @bookstodon this is great, I'll check it out and maybe get caught up without watching every episode. Though that goes against my more obsessive desires

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@philip_cardella @bookstodon Yeah I remember seeing that when I looked into it, but still I want to see everything. What if I miss some easter egg or something? I don't want to be out of the loop. 😄 Just gotta keep those tendencies in check now

willelm, to bookstodon

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@jillrhudy @janbartosik @bookstodon I don't read a ton of graphic novels, I should read more, but I'm pretty sure I'd still cry if I opened and read for the hundredth time

Well, I’m trying to get stared again.

Anyone got any good tips on how to buld a realistic and sustainable practice of writing daily?

I’m thinking make a 30 minute habit every day after I wake up, instead of straight to the socials. Also posting everyday on here to hold myself very mildly accountable by muttering into the void about what I’ve done that day.

@bookstodon @amwriting

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@mjjmori @bookstodon @amwriting A lot of people also set word count goals. But either way, I try to have small goals I know I can accomplish. So if you can get 30minutes or 250 words done when you wake, do that. Or maybe start at just 15 minutes and move up as you get more comfortable. Starting can be the hardest part, so I always like to have a goal that is not intimidating

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@trygvekalland @mjjmori @bookstodon I feel this. Also, when you finally get a good chunk of time to write you will catch some illness from the little ones and downs the whole day in bed. Speaking from my current experience

likewise, to bookstodon

Another really popular author whom I have never read anything by. I have a few of his & have been thinking about starting with this one. Fantasy is my least (tied with YA and self-help) favorite genre. That being said, I’m willing to give it a try.

Do you have any genres that you don’t like, but know of a certain book within that genre that you’d be up for trying? @bookstodon

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@likewise @bookstodon American Gods is really a fantastic book. I think you should give it a try. I really try to read anything I can but I don't read many romance novels. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any

When you Impulse-buy a book only to realize it sounded vaguely familiar because you've already read it but didn't remember because it had a different cover.

@KitMuse @bookstodon I don't know any lists but #WritingCommunity and #AmWriting are two good ones. There's also #WritingWonders and #pennedpossibilites that list of writers use with daily or weekly prompts. Also a lot use genre tags. Follow all those down the rabbit hole and you'll probably come up with some more

@coguelin @seanbala @bookstodon Yeah reading those books was like sipping tea by a warm fire. They just so comfy and nice. It was a welcome change of pace and it opened me up to a lot more books. Good gateway read

Anybody have recs for single-author science fiction and/or fantasy/paranormal short story collections? I'm especially interested in marginalized authors.

My faves so far:

  • 'Nathan Burgoine's Of Echoes Born (paranormal)
  • Zen Cho's Spirits Abroad (fantasy/paranormal)
  • Iona Datt Sharma's Not For Use In Navigation (mix of science fiction and fantasy)

Self-recs are cool, too!

@pelielios @jiujensu @skyekilaen @bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon What ages is it appropriate for? Young kids?

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@pelielios @jiujensu @skyekilaen @bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon Fair enough. We've started the transition to "big kid" books with my 5 year old and the idea of scifi fairy tales sounds really intriguing. We'd probably be OK with a little cartoon violence but I think she's a little young to get existential dread. At least I hope

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@pelielios @jiujensu @skyekilaen @bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon Maybe I'll just read them myself then!

willelm,
@willelm@indieauthors.social avatar

@pelielios @jiujensu @skyekilaen @bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon Not sure exactly why but that sounds familiar. Maybe I've seen an episode or trailer somewhere.

Also, a real used book is a beautiful thing.

@DarkMatterZine @pelielios @jiujensu @skyekilaen @bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon Yeah we have Artemis Fowl on the list! Hadn't heard of the new series but we could try that too. Thanks for the recommendations

There are books I've read once, long ago, and I knew would be with me forever.

Here, quotes from my all time favorite books (1):

“You must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. The world is in balance, in Equilibrium. A wizard’s power of Changing and of Summoning can shake the balance of the world. It is dangerous, that power.”
