I’m just such a Luddite & I want to write books about Luddites. — Ann Patchett

I finally visited Ann Patchett’s bookstore in Nashville (about 2 hrs away) & it didn’t disappoint. I’ve loved her books for some time, so this stop was a long time coming. I’m a Luddite at heart, which might be one of the many reasons I enjoy her books & characters.

I'm thinking about Mastodon in a wide view, in the world of social media, this feels a little outsider, while at the same time it also feels like it might be the future. So, let's talk about it!
What do you get out of Mastodon?
Why are you here?
How has it compared with your other social media experiences?
What do you see for the future of Mastodon?
What do you want to see?
And basically anything else about it you want to say about Mastodon.
LET'S TALK!

likewise,

@RickiTarr I came here b/c I missed the book community I had found on instagram (when IG was a better place). My experience has been good, I’d still like to find more book people. I love that this place seems to be growing. The lack of an algorithm, ads, & that reels aren’t shoved down my throat is refreshing. There are some really lovely people here 😊

What are you reading this week?

The 3 I’m in the middle of:

Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz
Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom
Orfeo by Richard Powers

20 years.

A lot of life can happen in twenty years. This book is one that was available for free through Prime & usually I never give those books a second glance (b/c they are usually just not very good) let alone read. Since I am reading other books at the moment, I’m not sure why I decided to also read this one. (I had download awhile back). Anyway— it’s pretty darn good, I’m 70% through and I would definitely recommend. Maybe Prime picked it on accident 😉 @bookstodon

I would submit, sir, that you & your family are addicted to money.

Patrick Radden Keefe

I read this book 2 years ago & it’s incredible. If you decide to read it, take your time with it. There’s a lot of detail & it’s easy to get lost a bit (at first) within the Sackler family members. More recently, as in this week, I finished watching Hulu’s Dopesick. 5 stars for Micheal Keaton. Just started Netflix’s Painkiller. It’s interesting to see how these shows differ in their approach. If you have an interest in this subject matter, I cannot recommend more highly, this book & these shows. @bookstodon

Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning & precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.

22 years.

The significance of the date of September 11th, 9/11, was seared into the nation's collective memory, altering the way those affected looked at the calendar & even clocks.

Magic Powers

I haven’t read all of these, but I am convinced he is probably a genius of some sort, as he seems to ooze great intelligence. He’s an author I’d like to hear speak & while I don’t get star struck, I might make him a batch of a peanut butter fudge—or wait, scratch that. That might be a little creepy (ie. Annie Wilkes from Misery) 😉

I’d listen & then quickly leave.

Fridays are for dark chocolate peanut butter fudge. I stopped eating most sugar & processed stuff 6 yrs ago (I make this with stevia & 90% chocolate), so finding a dessert that I love so much was a big thing.

Read a bit more of my book club’s next book today, so far so good.
Happy Friday ❤️

It’s common knowledge that bookworms hang out around books.

I just finished Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent & I recommend it if you like strange & dark stories. It hooks you from the beginning & kept me guessing the majority of the way through it. Another good one by her is Unraveling Oliver.

A little background info: These 2 are 16 days apart & will be 8 years old this December. I have been photographing them together since they were babies. While they may not be BFFs, they are definitely used to each other. I don’t know why I thought to take pics of them, but it’s turned into something cool. They are such interesting little creatures. 🐍 🐈 I know many folks don’t care for snakes (once upon a time I didn’t either) & may find these 2 together kind of odd—& you’d be right. They are odd, but sometimes the best pairings are. ❤️

Ok Bookworms, we are past the halfway point of 2023.

3 questions:
-Are you looking forward to reading a specific book?
-How’s your reading been this year?
-What are you reading now?

I’m looking forward to reading The Wager by David Grann (already out) & Ana Turns by Lisa Gornick (Netgalley ARC). My reading this year has just been ok, not meaning the books (those have been good & often great), but rather my time reading. Currently I’m reading Rabbits by Terry Miles & recently started Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. @bookstodon

4 of us met last night for dinner, drinks, & discussion about Demon Copperhead. 3/4 loved it, one thought it too depressing to finish. I thought it was incredible & easily gave it 5 stars.

Next up for book club: Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.

@EllieK @bookstodon Good to hear, & yes, read along! Have you read any others by this author?

likewise,

@EllieK @bookstodon I understand! If I didn’t write what I read down, I know I’d forget so many.

There are many things I love about reading on my Kindle, especially the convenience & lighting factor, but if it or all of the content were gone tomorrow, my reading wouldn’t skip a beat. My physical book collection is wonderful & it’s something I have been collecting & am continually curating. Years ago I got rid of other things to make space for bookshelves & I’ve never regretted it. The calming presence of books is something I adore, no power cord, electricity or wifi required. @bookstodon

I completely judge a book by its cover.

It’s not fair to books that may not have that attractive of a cover, but it is what it is-most especially when it’s an author or title I am unfamiliar with. The book below is evidence of this. This cover completely grabbed ahold of my attention. Not only did I read the synopsis, but I also knew I wanted to paint the other half. This is an older picture, but I’ve finally started reading it. While the synopsis is not one I’d gravitate towards, I’m giving it a chance, & all b/c of the initial attraction to the cover. @bookstodon

I started Tidelands last evening, so far so good. Having some family over in a bit, hoping to meet up with this book & possibly a glass of wine later today. @bookstodon

Another really popular author whom I have never read anything by. I have a few of his & have been thinking about starting with this one. Fantasy is my least (tied with YA and self-help) favorite genre. That being said, I’m willing to give it a try.

Do you have any genres that you don’t like, but know of a certain book within that genre that you’d be up for trying? @bookstodon

likewise, to bookstodon

Traded in some books & came home with some new ones. Trade-size editions are my favorites. In fact one of these is a trade for the same book that was a hardback (my least favorite reading format).

Not counting e-editions, do you prefer paperback or hardback. If hardback, why? Just curious. @bookstodon

likewise, to bookstodon

Thanks for dropping by, but as you can see my day is booked up.

“…why should I seek to change, what has been so precious to me for so long! You can never show better than as your own natural self.”

  • Charles Dickens, David Copperfield

I’m getting close to finishing Demon Copperhead & in doing so, my interest in reading David Copperfield is definitely piqued.
@bookstodon

likewise,

@Merlo51 @bookstodon I like what she did with a lot of the names.

likewise, to bookstodon

Well over 60% through Demon Copperhead, which I will say I’m confused as to why Trust by Hernan Diaz also won the fiction Pulitzer Prize, especially when it was alongside DC. But whatever, I digress. I started reading Unscripted by James B. Stewart & Rachel Abrams last evening to see what the writing style was like. I don’t read a lot of non-fiction, but I think this is going to be a good one. It’s about CBS, Sumner Redstone & it’s said if you liked the TV show, Succession, then you will enjoy this.

Shiner by Amy Jo Burns was one of my favorite reads a couple of years ago. Ever since reading, I periodically look to see if she has written another book—& finally, she has! Mercury is being released in January of 2024.
