timicin,

i’m REALLY feeling like this rn; this 4 quarter project is going to extend into at least 5 at the end of this year.

timicin,

You weren’t hoping that Secure Boot saves your ass, were you?

i wonder if containerized firefox (eg snap/flatpak) will

timicin,

fwiw: you do get to hear a little bit of ferengi in this episode, before they get their translators fixed

What distro would you recommend for a 32-bit old Acer One laptop? (kbin.social)

It's an old model (Acer One D257) Processor is Intel Atom. Memory is 1GB DDR3 with 320 GB of HDD. I currently Have MX 21 running on it, but I need to reinstall because I forgot the root password. Since I'm reinstalling the OS, I thought I'd ask here for recommendations for an OS that makes the most of this oldie.

timicin,

checkout out the treball channel on youtube; they did an entire one hour episode on the differences. tldr: they’re all extremely minor and there’s lots of them.

Holy fuck Culber… Hot damn.

i almost ran into the actor in new york back in 2008 on my bike while crossing the roosevelt bridge because he was shirtless and i was too busy staring at his very prominent pecs to watch where i was going; so agreed, he could definitely get it. lol

i think he looked back at me too; but i suspect it was to wonder wtf was wrong with the fat guy on the bike. lol

timicin,

i always felt that one of the awesome things about the show was how ftl was considered antiquated technology and that, besides the military, only the older and the nicer ships had them; while the newer and much more common average ships didn’t

something about a society that is both capable of traveling through the stars and has collectively forgotten where it had originated from in the galaxy; but widely considers both unimportant is super fascinating to me.

Made the switch to KDE

I’ve been using Fedora for a couple of months now, and have been loving it. Very soon after I jumped into this community (among other Linux communities) and started laughing at all the people saying “KDE rules, GNOME drools,” and “GNOME is better, KDE is for babies.” But then I thought, “Why not give KDE a try? The...

timicin,

i started using kde once personal computers became beefy enough to handle it well around 2002 but switched to gnome because gnome felt more polished at the time and i recently switched back and, you’re right, the customize-ability is impressive after using gnome for the last 15-ish years.

it’s also daunting/frustrating at times too.

timicin,

Bester was actually simply evil

evil with the friendliest smile and demeanor; pleasant evil like biden. lol

timicin,

in the fall of 2002 the windows millennium installation on my computer broke, trapping an entire semester’s worth of work on the hard drive and i was a starving college student with less than $20 to my name, so i couldn’t afford to buy windows xp and didn’t know anyone where i could get a pirate copy from.

i bought a mandrake linux cd pack for $8 from circuit city and used google in the computer laboratory to learn how to mount the hard drive, install drivers for ntfs and copy my all my work to a usb drive and i’ve been using linux ever since. i switch to 100% only linux both professionally and personally sometime around 2010.

timicin,

i’ve seen others try, but the fediverse lacks reddit’s niche groups so the content seems to get ignored by the general/generic loving fediverse crowd.

timicin,

my idle time is the 10/15 mins between tasks and i retain less than 5% of anything i read within 15 minutes of reading it.

timicin,

as i mentioned earlier: that content gets ignored on the fediverse, not a single upvote

timicin,

i’ve run into people who did this and i wished for deodorant every single time.

timicin,

Anyone who is not keeping some cash on the side to buy perfectly good assets (like gold) at bargin prices in the next year or so is crazy.

i’m willing to bet most just can’t afford it or are unaware

timicin,

the first from an ultra sexist and capitalist society to willing join fully automated gay space communism is freaky, so the class should be too. lol

timicin,

me three

i think that’s why the show gives me so much anxiety; it’s too believable

timicin,

anedotally: it works fine if it’s from a vendor who provides support for it. eg cumulus switches running fedora 9 but still getting updates from cumulus engineers.

timicin,

It sounds like you’re having difficulty w porn and you should seek help; for the rest of us, it’s a non issue

Elon's "extremely hardcore" toxic work culture means people are forced to take Adderall without a prescription to meet their workload. Just ask SpaceX employees.

"Some SpaceX workers resorted to taking Adderall to keep up with the pace of work at the company's launch facility, and others found themselves falling asleep in the bathroom during long workweeks, a recent Reuters investigation found.

"Travis Carson, a former SpaceX worker at the company's facility in Brownsville, Texas, told Reuters some workers took Adderall — a stimulant designed to help people with ADHD improve their focus and concentration levels — without a prescription to keep up with the pace of work."

What a nightmare!

#X @technology

timicin,

They do it because rich individuals like Elon have a vice grip control over the tech industry in this country and you don’t need to do it anymore once one of them deigns to give you a reputation as a hard worker that deserves the money (that they themselves don’t deserve).

timicin,

i can’t get over how much more they cost than a similarly spec’ed mac with macs being superior in every single benchmark (except privacy and customizability)

timicin,

and ansible along with it. (or atleast any other configuration management language).

timicin,

this one must either have a conscience or is being pressured to subject himself to the law somehow.

timicin,

When I tried tor it was so painfully slow that I have a difficult time imagining anything using it full time

timicin,

i passed that age milestone already am i’m definitely not ready

What got you into coding ? (aside from money)

To give some context, I’m a developer myself and once I had a conversation with someone who has not “tasted” programming, but was wondering about passion and career. I was asked what I like about programming. My answer was that my interest in it came from writing small scripts when I was young to automate things....

timicin,

I call myself a programmer because I’ve been been doing IT for so long that it’s impossible not to pick it up to get my job done.

timicin,

They agreed to being bussed (but they didn’t know exactly where) and Texas officials made sure to get that on paper to cya themselves against lawsuits and criminal charges

timicin, (edited )

Vivaldi browser is known to collect and sell your data on your usage like everything else except Firefox and chromium (not chrome); in case you didn’t already know

timicin,

I feel like the most galling thing about xtianity is that you can be the most violent, murderous, racist, homophobic pos forever and, per doctrine, you’ll still be welcomed into heaven no matter what so long as you believe that the invisible sky friend exists.

timicin,

You should add this at the beginning so that we can understand within one second:

In the 60s and 70s, some 4,500 young Inuit had IUDs inserted without their consent or that of their families

timicin,

I always thought that arch was more difficult to get started w due to my experience with it from 2003/2004; it was MUCH more difficult to install and use than red hat or Debian at the time because both only required an installation cd and the ability to click on “ok”

It’s nice to know it’s gotten better, but I’m an old fart now and you’ll have to pry Debian out of my cold dead hands before I’ll consider anything else. Lol

timicin,

Ah. Well if I’m not mistaken Lemmy is mostly Android / FOSS biased so I’m not surprised some people might have the “Apple bad” mindset. Honestly why do people care what products other people use? I read a comment the other day about an Android user despairing that some feature Google is implementing (don’t remember which) might make some Android users jump ship to Apple… Ok who cares? Why so much emotional investment in something so trivial? It sounds just as crazy when you flip it, “Oh no some of my Apple friends are switching to Android or PC” …. A phone is an everyday appliance. Do you care what brand your neighbor’s kitchen appliances are? That’s how you should feel about phones IMHO.

iphones are status symbols so they get to be ascribed w the same emotional irrationality that other status symbols get like cars and clothes.
